Drone Pilot's Genuine Reaction to DJI Digital FPV

This is an FPV drone pilot's genuine reaction to seeing and flying DJI Digital FPV for the very first time. This is GLD ( / @gldcreative6425 ) and in fact, he did not put my DJI goggles over his eyes until the point in the video where you see him put them on. It was a lot of fun watching his reaction. I think I might have spent his money for him.

I'm a year late but I bought the dji fpv bundle a month ago. I since spent about $5k on quads, planes, air units/vistas.. I love it. I still kept my long range fixed wings analog though.

On the Dji controller. If you hold down the C button it locks the controls, other than the menu controls. So no need to setup a pre arm. When your ready to go, just hold down the C button again till it beeps, bam! Ready to go again.

Thats the reason why i did not test these googles so far. I would feel the same way like GLD. Iam just waiting for better versions of this goggle that fits better, is smaller, lighter weight etc.

Friend of mine got the DJI system. First pack blew me away. Second pack... the image froze on take off and I was flying blind for like 3 seconds before I brought throttle down and disarmed as I heard props biff the grass. Flew a third pack but was still freaked out over frozen image. I took that 3rd pack all over hell and back checking the quality of the link versus my analog reference points. It is damn impressive and it works. The way that Nurk showed the resistance to multipathing in the indoor racing versus analog is possibly the single strongest pro "DJI is going places with HD". Thankfully all my cheaterkwad hijinks makes comfortable knowing I will be sticking to Analog for a long time to come. Hate the limited OSD setup of the DJI HD HUD. Hate no audio. And scared shitless of the frozen image that happened just as I took off. Very pretty and I am gonna help my buddy build a 6in long duration freeroaming rig for Lithium Ion.

We'll talk about this soon. I know that you do the cheaterkwad thing... for which you need analog. There are ways to remedy the frozen image thing. It's usually do to the power supply. Neither of my DJI unit quads do that as the power for the unit is clean. The very first build did do it, but I immediately cleaned up the power supply to the unit and it hasn't done it in months. My Vista unit does it, but very predictably. It's always upon first arming, 1 or 2 seconds and it's fine. I having to add some capacitance very close to the unit and I know I'll fix that. For the two new Vista builds I'll make sure to put a cap right on the unit input power and I won't be having that problem.

@@PinchTune Speaking of the tango 2 I was considering it in place of the dji controller. Is it difficult to bind with HD drones and dji goggles. I'm a newbie so forgive me.

@@WarrenlaidlerExp It's easier with the DJI controller since you don't need any extra receivers and what not. With the Tango 2 you need to run a Crossfire receiver into the flight controller and forfeit the DJI receiver integrated in the air unit.

@@chrisbee9164 You get used to it really freaking quick. I used to be all gung-ho about audio. I don't miss it. Audio from quads sounds like crap anyway. Just a bunch of wind noise and annoying motor noise. Lol. Where I do miss it is during long range, which I don't use DJI for that anyway. When a quad is really far it's weird to hear the natural audio come in a second late. A mic in that situation is good.

Thanks! It took me a while to really start liking it, but that was because I had bad luck with some of my first DJI builds. Not because of the system, but because I had a hard time making them fly like my usual FlightOne builds. But now that I have two well dialed DJI builds, I'm super happy.

Forgive my ignorance as i do not fly drones and have very little interest in doing so, but i have a question and i hope someone can help. What im gathering is that these goggles provide a first person perspective no? I ask because I was going to buy one of those custom faceplates that go on the front of the goggles for a project unrelated to all of this and wanted to know what its ACTUALLY used for.

Hi, yes, this is what they do. There's a live camera on the drone that feeds a video image in real time to the goggles, allowing you to fly in first person view. This has more applications of course. You could mount a camera to an RC car or a boat. Or you could put one of these units on a pole and feed it up a chimney to do an inspection or something of sorts.

This was exactly how I lost a grand. "Mistakenly" tried a friend's DJI system, bought the set later that night. There is no going back. BTW, are you using a different face pad on the goggle? it looks different from the stock one. I'm getting some light leakage on the stock pad.

Hi, it's 682g as flown here with a Session 5. In contrast, a similar build with a Caddx Vista is around 640g.

I've been flying analog still, after getting DJI back in Nov... so I'll weigh in. 1. I've had ONE lockout on an early test FC I was trying. And the Caddx Vista can lockout on the very first flight on the day when taking off... A cap near the main leads of the unit takes care of that. I fly them confidently now. 2. Light leak, a $15 foam available now from DJI takes care of that instantly. 3. Now, I think DJI is trying to prove that are the hobbyist's friend by collaborating with Caddx. To that, I also say, DJI might seem to be in the government's pocket... but that's because they have to play by the rules to stay in business as big as they are. Trust me, if the government weren't trying to kill this hobby they'd be doing business just like any other good company.

Bring out a V2 Goggle closer to the size of FATSHARKS or Oqua’s an even smaller Modual than the Caddix and then I’m sold. YES the image and quality is stellar..

Oh, also, if you use a DJI transmitter the air unit will do VIDEO AND CONTROL. I useTBS Crossfire for control, so I have to add a receiver for that.

Haha. I was sifting through the Open TX files one day and was listening to the Italian ones and liked it. So I used it as the opening sound. It's been on there for about 3 years. I speak Spanish and most people that speak Spanish can understand Italian, so it still makes sense. :) Essentially it says, "Master Mode Active." In OpenTX I think that's expert mode or something.

I can imagine it really extra expensive in certain parts of the works. However, don't fear, I think this is the future and the tech is going to get better. We pretty much maxed out analog, but digital is only getting started. It'll get even better and more affordable.

So Im late to quadcopters by a few years because I was modding the worlds only vtol dogfighting server at the time. So my channel name is the name of my game / server, and not FPV. While they were doing FPV, I was doing FPS...

I could've got DJI and still can, BUT.. 1. 2x heavier unmodded. 2. No small drones with cheap batteries for playing for long periods with many batteries. 3. Very expensive drones you can't relax with properly. 4. They have higher latency. 5. Image cuts to black immediately making it more likely to lose or crash expensive drone. 6. Only 2 cameras actually look O.K. (i own 4k TV's) 7. Dji is and always has been just a flying camera company for photographers. 8. Stress, worry, devastation, ect. 9. I'm not stupid.

Half of your points there are really subjective. I mean, I respect them, but I don't stress one bit flying a quad. So that doesn't apply to all. Last time I checked, I'm not stupid either. So that one's out. The higher latency thing isn't noticeable. Only a proper analog race setup with a really fast camera like a Foxeer Predator can truly beat it in speed. If you're used to something like a Micro Eagle, it's basically the same. The image doesn't cut to black. Mine doesn't. You have to have really dirty power to have that problem. I don't. I crash just as much as I do with analog and my DJI gear is still fine.

Oh god the drones aren't "very expensive" less than like $100 more than a budget analog quad and $50 more than a high end one. The entire vista weighs 28g. The image doesn't actually just cut to black immediately you get tons of wantings just like analog. You get a signal strength indicator your mb/s and start to see pixelation. The penetration is just amazing analog is just trash in comparison. With a 2w vtx and top of the line antennas and rapid fire I could barely fly behind my house the breakup was insane. Now that's nothing not even a hiccup I can sit in my car and fly around buildings trees anything with no problems. 9. On your list is wrong you are stupid for avoiding the best thing to happen to fpv in a half a decade.

@@flo-ridafpv5713 Don't underestimate Capitalism...unless DJI succeeds in some monopoly scheme there's money to be made in offering non- tethered DJI competition if not already in the works. Honestly from what I can tell navigation wise DJI has nothing over a well built quad with an INav system on it except it's a consumer grade RTF . HD digital FPV feed isn't even there yet if you ask me.I hit enough scraggle with my low latency analog system I don't really need anything slower...lol..
