Another possible reason for Game Freak's design philosophy might be as a spiritual successor to Mirage Island. Both the island and the trees are time-based events with extremely low encounter rates. They both have a baby Pokemon that was heavily promoted in other Poke media (Wynaut/Munchlax). And they both have a SUPER desirable item for "competitive" players: the Liechi berry and Leftovers (hold item on Lax).

Feebass isn’t actually that bad! Of course it's still one of the hardest pokemon to find, but if you have a method it's definitely much more reasonable than munchlax. I've caught one in gen 3 and maybe gen 4? If you want to just go for it all at once, you could of course check every tile in the respective locations one at a time, but obviously that would require a day with a huge chunk of free time. Alternatively you could spread it out over multiple days and check the same tiles each day. Of course that means it would be an undetermined amount of time just because it's banking on the one of the tiles being one of the few you regularly check, but then you're not overwhelming yourself all at once.

I can personally attest to the months-long adventure to catching a non-calculated Honey Tree Munchlax, as I had challenged myself to do so in my recent (not-Brilliant) Diamond playthrough. I had maps drawn out, Honey purchases were running my prize money reserves dry, and trying to plan the tree checking around a retail job gave it a tense, urgent feeling. But I did it. And I think the best part is that because of the 90% table respawn rate when you reslather the same tree in a row, alongside Munchlax spawns counting as their own table, finding one Munchlax theoretically opens the treasure trove, boosting its 1% spawn rate up to 90%- allowing you to easily re-farm it until it despawns. ...at least as easily as Honey Tree farming ever gets. You're never just hunting for a single Munchlax in these games. They come in PACKS. And I think that's a really neat detail not a lot of people, even Honey Tree experts, realize.

On the topic of Barry having a Munchlax as a way of beating the player, I would love it if in a future Pokemon game, they gave us proper rivals for other aspects of the game beyond battling. They sort of did this in gen 3 and in gen 6. In gen 3, May/Brendan focused more on completing the Pokedex than battling, to the point where your last battle with them is before Mossdeep and they don't even have their starter fully evolved. And in gen 6, you're technically given a few rivals with Calen/Serena acting as the main rival while Shauna, Tierno, and Trevor act as secondary minors, with those three having goals aside from battling. But they don't really act as barriers to your progress like your normal rival battles. So what I mean is having a rival that actively challenges you in Pokedex completion, maybe sometimes blocking your progress until you surpass them, and always showing off more difficult to obtain Pokemon, like version exclusives or low encounter rates or even normally unobtainable by that point. Even give them rare forms or shinies. Then, to top it off and annoy players, let them taunt the player with pity trades for such rare and elusive Pokemon. Like "oh, you weren't able to catch a Munchlax yet? I've already found several. I suppose I could trade one to you if you really can't find your own." Then piss off players even more. Until the post game, all of those trades are one time offers. Said no? Didn't have something you're willing to lose, or the Pokemon they specifically requested? Too bad, you missed out. Again, until the post game, where you can find them offering all of the trades you missed and more. Have all version exclusives available for trade only for other version exclusive, but have rare Pokemon and forms available for trade for anything, and add in reactivity for those, where if you trade them the same Pokemon, they respond, taken aback by you having actually had the Pokemon. Something like "oh, you had a Munchlax already." Just imagine, you're going through your adventure and suddenly this guy's like "oh, you only have 12 Pokemon? I've already caught 40. Are you even trying? The professor wanted us to fill out the Pokedex, remember? I'm not letting you past until you have more Pokemon." Then later he's like "oh, did you manage to get this Pokemon? It's really rare, only a few people have seen it. No? Well, I have six. I suppose I could give you one." Or even "oh, did you know that some Pokemon have different colours than others? Easily the most sane and logical explanation for Barry having a Munchlax is that Palmer had at least one Snorlax and a Full Incense, but the alternative is much funnier because you can get into really fun conspiracy territory this way. If Barry does it legit (allowing for 1 hour of real time to get to the first honey tree to be absolutely generous) and if the player can reach the Lake event in under 13 hours at most then Barry must have got a Munchlax first try on any of the trees you can hit by 7 hours in, and most realistically the first…6 trees? I don’t even want to try calculating the odds of that. Taking into account that the fucker also has a Heracross…I think the ar in Barry actually stands for Action Replay (and if you’re speedrunning the game it definitely does) Anyway, great video, just subscribed recently after binging your past stuff and it was really well worth it!

I never bothered with the trees, I just traded a Snorlax over and bred it with an incense to get a Munchlax in Platinum... I not only cheated the game, but myself. My honor is forever stained.

In 2007 I was quite obsessed over pokemon diamond to the point that I captured almost all pokemon you could capture in an isolated game file (no gts, no trades, no 3gen transfers) except for two pokemon, the great marsh kangaskhan and mf munchlax, only god knows how hard I tried, I farmed honey trees for almost two years with no results, the thing is, if you are ignorant of the deep intricacies of this bs mechanic (I was) you can totally screw your chances to get munchlax (I did), then platinum came out I was playing the game first day get to floaroma town and windworks valley smear the trees in those locations and call it for a day, next day I got two freaking munchlax one in each tree, my first and only thought about it was that maybe they made it easier to get munchlax in the trees because they knew how bs it was to get one back in D/P. I didn't understood the galaxy levels of luck I had that day until several years later. never catched that kangaskahn in the great marsh though

I love rare Pokémon like this because the fact that it’s unreasonably tedious to get for an individual player is the point. Even at that fraction of a percent chance, a lot of players will still find it randomly. It’s great for a series that’s designed around the social aspect of trading. A lot of self centered people seem to really dislike these features because they feel entitled to whatever rare reward they might hold, but I really love them because when things don’t always revolve around you specifically, it makes the world feel deeper and more immersive in my opinion.

My head cannon is that Barry got his Munchlax on the first try and isn't even aware that Munchlax is all that rare.

Imagine something like that happening again today. A Pokemon that has so many appearances before it comes out in the new generation and then it's almost impossible to catch. I managed to get one in platinum this year after half a year.

Pause at 10:47 There are very small differences between the lucky tree and regular tree. It could be how the video loaded or something else. Point is there are a few pixels here and there that seem different. I know they are pixels, i just dont know what they are called, hopefully someone else does. - Top of the tree the marks inside the yellow top - bottom center pixel is smaller on the lucky - center center pixel is wider on lucky - bottom left pixel is wider on lucky

I played D/P/Pt growing up and never knew how the hell to get a Munchlax until I was watching a Let's Play where the player explained the ludicrous lengths to which one would have to go to get one. I knew then and there that I would never be obtaining one in those games. XD You're right, though, the game makes very little (pretty much no) effort to guide you on how to get a Munchlax of your own; they just dangle one in your face in the Barry fight without explanation.

All of that random chance, all of those low percentages, and you know what the funniest part about Gen 4 Munchlax is for me? My brother used honey on a random one, and got Munchlax on the first try. So we presumed it was a common.

Part of me is starting to think that Heartgold and Soulsilver were made with the sole purpose of giving people access to Snorlax so they could hatch a Munchlax and stop wasting their time with Honey trees.
@ave-taka10 ай бұрын
A few years ago, I completed a living dex in Platinum. I had to use HeartGold for a few Pokémon (namely the Johto legendaries, the Kanto starters and Zangoose, since I didn't have FRLG or Ruby), but I really really wanted to get myself a Munchlax in Platinum, instead of doing it the easy way. I don't recall if I used the calculator or not, but the shocking thing is that I managed to get myself a Munchlax in *record time*. I'm talking like, the first time I checked the tree in Route 207 - I believe I actually did not use the calculator because I would slather every single tree in the region with Honey those days, so it was insanely lucky that I got it. I would've absolutely committed to the grind if I had to, since I had to beat HeartGold three times (one for each Kanto starter), so it didn't bother me to take quite a while in getting all 493 Pokémon, but nonetheless and obviously I am very grateful that it took so little time! Munchlax really is a special Pokémon. I think its existence is kind of baffling and yet how rare it was in the Gen IV games and how much it was pushed before said games' release, both make it so appealing. I'd love to use it in a Gen 4 playthrough, one day; not in BDSP though, that game lets you have an easy Munchlax if you so please, in the Grand Underground. I think it's also pretty neat that Gen 9's DLC had a minigame where, on the hardest difficulty, you'd be gifted a shiny Munchlax - and it was so difficult that it ended up being nerfed in updates after the DLC's release.
@Magnemite_10 ай бұрын
you can actually tell if you've triggered that 10% (9% on munchlax trees) chance for no pokemon to appear without waiting the 6 hours by just pressing a on the tree again after slathering it, making your odds go from 1/100 to a whopping 1/91. certainly didn't stop it from taking me over 3 months of checking at least twice every day to get mine, and i'm going to do it again in the future to shiny hunt it i really like the idea of the honey trees, but they REALLY needed some explanations in the game. maybe even a barely noticeable difference in the appearance of the munchlax trees compared to the regular ones as well. the 90% chance of getting the same table again if you slather the same tree you most recently got an encounter from is the worst part by far, since that's generally how you would go about doing it (plus it adds a ton of time to the routine of doing it over and over) and it's an easy to miss but critically important detail if you're trying to get one using a guide all this in mind, this isn't even close to the rarity of the actual hardest single encounter in the series to find, mirage island wynaut. thankfully it's not really the same thing since you can get wynaut multiple other ways in hoenn without trading, meaning munchlax is still the hardest single pokemon species to get in a single game with no trading, but mirage island does also have a completely exclusive item along with it as well. 1/91 every 6 hours has nothing on the 1/10,923 per 6 pokemon per day that mirage island has, but that doesn't stop munchlax from being really hard to get and interesting to talk about as well. fun video

I was playing Pokémon HeartGold a while back. When I caught a Snorlax, I breed it with a Ditto hoping to have Munchlax hatch from the egg, then I was going to trade it to Platinum and to my shocking surprise a Snorlax hatched from the egg instead. Then someone told me to give Snorlax the luck incense item or something first. 😑

Btw in pokemon sun and moon and the ultra games there’s a breakable boulder on route 1 with a patch of grass behind it. You mind munchlax there and each time you encounter one it’s holding leftover’s an insanely good held item. So you can basically farm those things for leftovers and even make a pretty penny in game by selling the extra ones if you need cash.

The worst part about the honey trees is that the encounters in them are for the most part very weak, and the ones that are actually worth using are the rarest. One time I wanted to use Cherrim in a playthrough, and not only did I have to jump through hoops to get it, but after all that effort it was a pain to fight with. I never even bothered with Mothim, Wormadam or Vespiquen (which requires you to soft reset for a female Combee too btw) and after my Cherrim experience I surely never will.
