Cultural appropriation, to many, means people with a privileged status taking cultural identity markers without permission or without acknowledgment from members of a minority community. This can include language, art, music, literature, clothing, food, beauty standards/traditions, social norms, customs, and values. So, does that mean that a Caucasian person can never own a Chinese restaurant? Can a Latino wear braids or locks? Should children never wear Halloween costumes that depict another culture, ethnicity or race? When does admiration turn into appropriation, and is the argument against appropriation just? Does the anti-appropriation movement ever turn into a form of racism? Meet a young woman who says she received death threats for wearing a dress from another culture, a woman who says she was called out for cosplaying a Japanese anime character, and a woman who says people need to stop stealing other cultures' foods and calling them their own. Dr. Neal Lester, foundation professor of English at Arizona State University, Brittany Collins, influencer and business owner, and Amala Ekpunobi, PragerU personality and host of the podcast Unapologetic LIVE, join Dr. Phil for a passionate debate. I’m black but I don’t even care. Let people do whatever they want. Why are people so easily offended. If people are bitter just say that 😂 it’s insecurities

If the black community put this energy into fixing themselves and the things that REALLY matter, I couldn’t put into words how much further you’d be in life .

When people think it’s more offensive to wear a dress than to send a death threat 🤦🏻‍♀️

The woman saying "I can speak for black culture" referring to boundaries set: NO! YOU CANT! You know why? Because being of a certain race doesn't mean you know what everyone in your race is thinking. You aren't a herd, you're individuals. This is RACISM to paint all members or a race with the same brush. Cultures can only merge and be symbiotic by people expoloring and imtating one anothers cultures. It brings people together! It has happened since the dawn of time! This is how England came to be; 5 or 6 cultures combining over centuries. Stop fighting for segregation.

As a part Asian myself, I can tell you that majority of Asians really don't care if you wear those outfits. More power to you if you can pull it off. The smallest opinions have the loudest voices and Twitter is a cesspool anyway.

I’m white and when I was 10 my family went to Mexico. A random lady came up to me on the beach and started making tiny braids in my hair. There were so cute and I didn’t have to wash my hair for 2 weeks because of that. I also have the worlds curliest hair so she did an amazing job. She asked for money after and my mother gladly paid her.

As a part of the Mexican culture I would say whenever people say or do or have something to do with the culture I am completely fine with it unless it is in a disrespectful matter

Death threats over a dress, are you kidding me? It's a dress people, get over it! Since when has things like that hair have to be part of one culture or race? This is just getting out of hand and needs to end

As a Vietnamese person I can say that we and especially the older generation love when people wear and appreciate our culture. However, when it’s done disrespectfully such as sexualising it etc that’s when it isn’t cool, anything else is great I think

It’s sad because I live in Canada and America has been pushing their cultural appropriation beliefs onto us now. I even had to learn about it once in my religion class. The term cultural appropriation should only be used if someone is inspired by another culture and is hateful towards that culture. The way cultural appropriation is being used in America just seems like a way to push people further apart, not bring them together in equality.
