Cultural appropriation, to many, means people with a privileged status taking cultural identity markers without permission or without acknowledgment from members of a minority community. This can include language, art, music, literature, clothing, food, beauty standards/traditions, social norms, customs, and values. So, does that mean that a Caucasian person can never own a Chinese restaurant? Can a Latino wear braids or locks? Should children never wear Halloween costumes that depict another culture, ethnicity or race? When does admiration turn into appropriation, and is the argument against appropriation just? Does the anti-appropriation movement ever turn into a form of racism? Meet a young woman who says she received death threats for wearing a dress from another culture, a woman who says she was called out for cosplaying a Japanese anime character, and a woman who says people need to stop stealing other cultures' foods and calling them their own. Dr. Neal Lester, foundation professor of English at Arizona State University, Brittany Collins, influencer and business owner, and Amala Ekpunobi, PragerU personality and host of the podcast Unapologetic LIVE, join Dr. Phil for a passionate debate. This country is so misguided when is come to appropriation. We are a nation of immigrants. We all share what we are with each other. I live in such a mixed community where none of this mess ever comes up. It's only when feeding the narrative via media that these topics have any relevance. In fact when people voice these types of opinions in the real world, the rest of us look at them like they are ridiculous. If you make or do something and said it is yours despite someone already invented that first you're stealing their idea. If you're going to copy something of somebody's EXACTLY (a dance, a recipe, a script), it just makes sense to give credit because you didn't originally invent it.👌If you didn't know, you didn't know, if you did then that's a problem. The tomato originally came from South America and through trade it was brought to Mexico where it was domesticated. The Mexica (Aztecs) developed the small green tomatl (often called a tomatillo today) and the larger red jitomatl. Tomatl became tomate in Spanish, and the Spanish brought it to Europe, and from there to the rest of the world, including Uganda.

And if they make money on it then a happy person would feel happy for them and happy about how they inspired that. Nothing is being "stolen", it is being shared. Shared by everyone who is on this Earth for such a short time. We all need to be together in this and not so divided. There's division in so many ways, and these types of people want to make it seem like it's some big lesson when it's really an unnecessary thing to be thinking about. We all have enough going on. Food gives us life, helps to sustain us and allows us moments of joy with family and friends.

the Mexican woman who of course had an issue with Mexican cuisine and not Nigerian or Jamaican, or Korean food, is literally the type of person to colorize or not deem someone mexican enough. (mexican here) these are the type of people who have a chip on their shoulders because they have some weird resentment about their place in society. my great grandparents taught us to be Americans first. they were proud to be in this country and reap its benefits; they saw no point in insisting on a culture that wasn’t their own (American) They wanted all of their efforts and energy to get out of poverty and being poor, all to reap the benefits of the American dream, what they worked hard for, fought for *and* achieved, to *not* be dishonored or held as unimportant .. We still had very heavy mexican influences and experience but it was secondary to who we were everyday, Americans.

One of the most "appropriated" foods ever made is the hamburger; there's literally infinite ways to prepare one, yet I don't hear Germans (myself included) complaining. It is an honor when people of other cultures iterate on our food, and in many ways they enrich what was already great, and make it even better! There's nothing more pathetic than gatekeeping food! Let people experiment with food and make amazing things!
