@bunnyoppress Жыл бұрын
@Kristen Kidd that's true! But um, I'm not sure YOU know how hair works. Type 4 hair grows in a completely different way than all other hair types. Our hair strands grow all different directions, so the weight of the extension hair in combination with the brick laying pattern helps maintain the integrity, moisture, thickness and sebum flow for our hair. Traditionally African braiding styles are not suited for most hair types, since the hairs are growing all in one direction, but are being pulled into small sections in different directions. Over time, box braids will thin your hair and break it off, just like if I kept fishtailing my hair, it would dry up and break off. Not everything is for everyone! But keep playing with that kanekalon, the braider gets paid either way. I just think getting traction alopecia because you wanna be cute is dumb, but more power to ya!
@kristenkidd3982 Жыл бұрын
@@bunnyoppress traction alopecia is something you get from repeatedly pulling on your hair. Meaning if a white woman braids her hair (there's literally no reason for it to be as tight as they do on other hair types) several times because it's fun, she isn't in any danger. This is what I meant by "you don't know how hair works". I didn't mean "please type up an incredibly long-winded explanation about something I didn't ask about.".. I simply meant a white person can braid their hair too rather than tell her daughter, "no honey, I'm not ALLOWED because I'll start a race war".

Precisely. But this professor's whole agenda and career has been about confusing people on this point and others. Obfuscating and misleading instead of clarifying as an academic's duty to the public is supposed to be. Cultural borrowing is rampant throughout history and present and very little has actually been to mock. Even the "trustafarian" hippies in dreads, which we used to just mock as cringe, are not actually doing anything to disrespect. He seems to acknowledge the commonality of borrowing and only condemn mocking, only to pull a motte and bailey and try to use this to condemn a much wider variety of contemporary cultural borrowing that has nothing to do with mockery. Notice something very interesting. Only in one instance does he actually explicitly add the condition that he is only talking about _mocking_ appropriation and none other. That is the case of men wearing women's clothing. Hmmm. Well this of course is do Dr. Intersectional avoids "punching down" at an oppressed group. White people wearing the braids, he is content to pull the motte and bailey and let the idea of mocking black culture infest your thought on the issue without getting you to think too hard about whether any actual mockery is occurring.

These people suck and need to leave other people alone who aren't hurting anyone and are just living their life.
@tisbutascratch20452 жыл бұрын
Another thing black people never seem to recognize about their cultural hairstyles today (mainly in the braids they wear), is that while seperated braides all over the head was a cultural hairstyle, adding fake hair and multicoloured weave is not and has never been cultural. It's a modern phenomenon that you will never find even as early as 50-60 years ago. The length is also there, imo, to imitate European and Asian hair lengths as it's extremely rare for Africans to grow their hair longer than shoulder length naturally. And yet they claim this hairstyle (just as they do with weave that also copies Euro-centric hairstyles) and attempt to own them as their own. Braids similar to box braids can also be found all over Asia and in certain parts of Russia, so, again, this is not a unique hairstyle to them. If only they would live by the rules they set for everyone else.

It can be seen as no big deal by some, or "trivial", but to others, after a while it WILL get annoying until it becomes an issue that needs to be changed, or it can critically damage the relationship. Sometimes it's even the reaction to the criticism that's more important. This is common sense when dealing with relationships on an individual scale, but it can be hard to process in a larger context, even though the same rules apply. But hey, deny it. Say it's "victim-mentality" or run away from the problem by refusing to address it. It's always so funny to me cause the same people that say victim mentality are the same people that complain constantly and say "this is why America is divided". My parents always taught me that you get what you put it in. "Cultural appropriation" can be a touchy subject. For food, there *are* the extremists who claim simply eating or cooking something from another culture is appropriation. I find that funny because a couple of years ago, a college intern accused Jay Leno of racism for *not* liking Mexican food, to which he responded *"that's not racist, you idiot."* In Surrey, BC, we have Fusion Festival every summer and there are pavilions for countries all over the world. Purveyors sell food, clothing and cultural items; sometimes there are henna artists and people who do hair braiding (and they don't refuse service to white people either.) I think if something is done respectfully and out of a place of appreciation, not to mock other cultures, it should be ok. In 2007, I got my hair braided in Mexico and the *only* comments I received were positive; even the San Diego-Tijuana bus driver (who was black) said they looked great on me. Also that sexism thing was ridiculous, I’m a tomboy who wears men’s clothing, has plenty of male interests, personality traits and wears my hair short & buzzed, does that mean I’m appropriating “male culture?” No, I’m dressing (and behaving) to my personality type; *nothing more, nothing less.* Going back to food, culture doesn’t necessarily equal race either. For example, there are many different cultures throughout Europe and no one gives Anglo-Saxons grief for eating (or cooking) pizza, perogies & kielbasa or souvlaki, tzatziki & pita. Although, there *are* some people in Canada who've started calling the French-Canadian delicacy, *poutine,* cultural appropriation (especially if you declare it the national dish.) I think it’s getting just a bit ridiculous; I can’t imagine Americans calling *gumbo* or *jambalaya* cultural appropriation.

As a Filipino (not speaking for every Filipino out there), I never felt offended whenever a foreigner wears our traditional clothes, eat our food and do Filipino whatnot. As a matter of fact, I feel the reason why Filipinos swarm a video of another race trying out our stuff is because we are elated and proud that our culture is being recognized and appreciated by others. If we truly wanted inclusivity and equality in our society, then why are we constantly gatekeeping aspects of our culture? Moreover, these people would always whine about appropriation but they would wear suit and tie and other "white things". It's ridiculous, no? I'm really baffled by this.
@desired483 Жыл бұрын
Are you saying suit and ties are white culture or was that just like an unserious example?
@desired483 Жыл бұрын
Because if you go back in history you can see culture of MANY different peoples attempt to be erased. Adopting Western fashions was a way that the people of any non-Western culture could try to overcome the prejudices Westerners had of them as "backwards" or "primitive" because if it didn’t fit the regular old white way it was wrong. The world was not suited to fit people’s traditions for the longest times so they adapted. So a simple suit and tie? if that’s appropriation i doubt anybody really cares… And culture appropriation is a new age problem bc things like racism is a CRAZY idea now. Exactly! He will cry victim and say his people before him had their culture taken away and this was forced upon them…but old boy is forgetting no one is forcing him today to do a damn thing, he chooses to take from the White Man’s Culture and talk about black culture being taken.

When a black person straightens their hair... is that cultural appropiation?

I thought cultural appropriation is when you “take” something common in another culture, and claim that you invented it, not when you just wear braids or henna.

no its appropriating another culture...so an imitation for your own pleasure not because its your culture or norm

Well, my family is from India. When I have visited, people wear jeans over there. Is that appropriation of Western culture because they are wearing jeans? I haven’t met anyone over in India who gets upset when people in the USA wear henna. I have seen people get upset when Hindu religious symbols are used as fashion, but actors in India so the same thing with Christian symbols, like wearing cross necklaces. To add- the last example I gave is a great example of being disrespectful, but it’s not appropriation.

@@hollaybee human beings have been doing that since the beginning of time. It's literally how cultures were formed in the first place. If there is no ill intent, then that ideology is wanting. Should we all stop utilizing math with base 10 because the majority of Americans are not of Arab decent? I think that would be a terrible thing.

@Lunali agree! There is a big difference between appreciation and disrespect/stealing. My family got out little neighbor kid a traditional outfit. Let me tell you, he looked so cute with his blonde hair, blue eyes, and Indian drip!

He tries to clear himself at the start saying cultural appropriation is not subjective and can be adopted by any race out there but at the end targets whites by saying he would refer to it as white supremacy. This seems like it is coming from a toxic emotion he has against white people alone. Why can we not just be free to appreciate someone else’s culture and it be a positive thing and just get on with life not getting hung up on stupid little nit picky things. Braids come from all kinds of different cultures and for all kinds of different reasons. For me I can only speak on what I know as I am white I know braids in my culture were used in battle to tie up long hair and to create artistic patterns on women. Now black people have different reasons to their different cultures but just because mine was adopted a long time ago and for a different reason doesn’t make it less relevant than yours? You can’t just assume that this one thing belongs to you and that’s all, because as that very intelligent woman stated everyone wears and adopts all kinds of different things that are mixed into everyone’s own cultures, I think the only way to move on from all this modern day bs is to appreciate each other, support it and stop talking about these things because all it does is highlight negativity and hate towards each other. I forget who said it, I think it was Morgan freeman but he said the only way to get over racism is to stop talking about it. That speaks volume.

Originally cultural appropriation from my understanding was people being offended because people would wear something from outside their culture & making fun of said culture, which I could see being messed up. However, now it’s the assumption everyone is mal intent for wearing something outside their culture and argue we should acknowledge where it’s from. Like I don’t know about you but I’m not a walking billboard advertisement giving a shout out for everything I buy.
