I started going grey at 13 yo and by 18 yo I was regularly coloring my hair to cover the grey. I become completely grey by my early 30s. It became way too much maintenance to color my hair (needing touch ups every 2 weeks), so I eventually gave up and just let my grey grow out and am happy with the way it looks. I’m still young and maybe it ages me, but saving hundreds of dollars and hours in the salon every month is so worth it.

I stared greying in my late 20’s due to genetics. I started coloring when someone thought my daughter was my granddaughter. I colored until I was 50. I had to do it every 14 to 18 days to keep roots from showing. My colorist did a fantastic job and no one knew I was coloring. I always felt if you are going to color don’t show roots. My hair is the texture of Dr.Ellis so it’s more difficult to hide grey roots. And I think it looks really tacky to see someone’s grey roots. Not coloring at all looks better in my opinion. I do miss looking younger but not all the money and time spent to keep it that way. Now at 60 my hair is nearly total white. I do get some low lights every 3 months to give my hair dimension.

Nicely put. Living in south africa I have to say that I've had magnificent results generally from going on the carnivore diet. I'm 3 months in and my overall health has improved significantly. Most people here and probably there too are hesitant to try it out. Besides thickening of skin deeper sleep lifting of brain fog, I've noticed my hair has been darkening. Try it out...really!

I started going grey fairly young (after my mother) and I coloured it dark brown well into my 50s. But it was starting to become a pain because I would have to get the roots coloured every 3-4 weeks and it was expensive and time consuming (if I coloured it at home I made a mess in the bathroom lol). I decided to embrace my grey hair and started growing it out around my mid-50s. I love my grey because it actually looks silver and I get a lot of positive comments on it and people ask me if that is real or if I coloured it that way and I tell them it's all natural. Some days when I look in the mirror I feel I look my age (which will be 60 in July) and that's okay, but once in a while I think about colouring it brown again but then I never do. I think my grey is here to stay because I love it and it is only when I think other people might judge me about it I get self-doubts and many of the negative comments come from actual friends. But I believe in aging gracefully and loving yourself at any age :)

I just henna'd my hair today. I have to do it every 6-7 weeks and I'm so over it. But I still do it because I like how it looks afterward, and without the drying effects of chemical dyes. Someday I'll probably cut my hair short and let it be salt and pepper but that will need to be when I'm ready to start looking old. Right now I still pass for someone in their 30s even though I'm 50s, but only with freshly henna'd hair or a wig.

I’ve used Mayraki color restoring treatment and it really works, you get your original color back. But the plant extract in it leaves horrible stains on pillows and towels, so I’ve stopped using it. It might be worth using for people who wash their hair regularly (so you can apply it in the morning and rinse in the evening for example). My mom has great results with it too!

She looked as though she was probably a blonde when younger but the way she styled it she looked great, I didn’t ask her age but she didn’t look as old as im sure she actually was. I think it’s easier for blonds to transition than brunettes but after it’s all grey, if you like it, rock it!

Since I grew out my silver hair 6 years ago, no offense silver sisters, I just can not get use to it and have tried to color it back to a light brown. Great information! I just started to get a few gray hairs at 50 (I am 51) and luckily they blend in with my ash blonde hair pretty well. I heard glutathione supplementation was helpful in reducing oxidative stress and delaying grey hair and starting taking it about 5 years ago i can’t isolate my slowing to grey to glutathione because I also lead a healthy life except for stress but I have much less grey than my siblings who are around the same age as me. However my siblings both have darker hair, I wonder if Caucasians with darker hair are more prone to go grey earlier or if the contrast in color is just more noticeable?

I moved from Turkey to Germany with hope to have better life but it was a wrong decision. Since moving in one year I lost a lot of hair and my hair colour turned gray. The big reason was climate change, social environment change, loneliness, different cultures and moral values. I lose my motivation for workout and get lazy person so I gained weight and my body changed, hence I don’t suit in my old clothes. However, after my Bali holiday I started planning my life again and willing change my routine and get again self confident and love my body. I recognised that my hair loss stopped. Now I hope my hair colour will reverse. A long term holiday was the solution for me.

Hi Dr. Ellis, what a great video! I’m going to be 40 next week (but at least at the beginning of COVID was still getting carded for R-rated movies!); still, I’m obsessed with delaying my greying. It seems to be the one telltale sign that I may not be a teenager anymore. I have dark almost black hair. Permanent dyes are always an option, but I love the look of highlights, specifically balayage, which is hard to camouflage with all the stray silvers. My current stylist recommends holding off on permanent dyes (using the Demi-permanent options) for as long as possible. It still kind of sucks. Demi-permanent doesn’t take away from the greys at all. I have been trying Arey (both the supplement and the topical spray), but don’t know if they have made any difference. Time will tell, but hopefully science comes up with new innovations soon!

I need to dye my hair every 4-5 weeks, I am 36 now and started to notice my first grey hair in my mid twenties. In my case it is genetics, so it is hard to influence it.

Most of my family went grey in their 20/30s but they were all smokers. I never smoked and I have some grey but you really have to be close to me to see them. My hair has gotten darker over the years. When I was younger I had a mixture of blond, brown and red in my hair. Now it’s mostly dark brown and a bit of grey sprinkled in lol. My gram took an iron supplement back in the early 2000s (she was in her late 70s at the time and her hair got darker, she still had mostly grey and white but I noticed in the back it was almost brown rather than grey. I had an aunt who was battling cancer in 2018/2019 and after chemo her naturally white blonde hair grew back a light brown/dirty blonde color and was curly. She had extremely straight hair before that. My dad (aunts brother) didn’t go grey as he aged but his hair darkened from white blond to a darker yellow, he was a smoker as well and his hair receded a bit but he never had grey (he passed at 51, so he didn’t make it to senior hair).

I've noticed something so odd at the k-12 where I teach in Hawaii. A large number of my middle school students are getting a noticeable amount of gray hair and all of them are of mainly Samoan descent and some with Hawaiian/Samoan descent. I am so curious as to why this is. Genetics? Diet mixed with their genetics? I feel so bad that 6th/7th graders are having to deal with this, but most students are pretty nice and don't tease them.

I started seeing grey hair in my 50s, although my natural color was still dominant. I decided not to dye it anymore in my late 50s. I started eating keto then carnivore in my early 60's. Now at 66, my hair is less grey than it was before I changed my diet. That has been pretty amazing. I have read commentary on many keto/ carnivore videos that others have had a similar experience. I did up my protein and fat consumption significantly, which may be contributing to this.

@DrSamEllis Most of the grey is toward the front as you can see in my YT picture. The back is more of my natural brown with very little grey. Also, the texture is still pretty consistent from when I was younger and it's still thick.

Hi im new on your channel. It is not easy to understand everthing...but the thing that im most confused about is all the videos about skinproducts, when they are good for the skin, only good, and when they are treatment like for creepy skin pigmentaition etc. What are chemicals in the produkt you dont want if you dont want to 'mess' with the skin. Am I making sense?😊

I started noticing some gray hair in my late 20s. I covered it up for years. Mainly because I liked to switch up my hair color but at 33 I decided to stop dyeing it and embrace the greys. It’s 4 years later and I have significantly more greys. I’d say I’m about 40% grey hair. Some days i love it. Some days I feel like it ages me 😩 and some days I want to switch up the color and do something fun but I do think no dye for so many years has made my hair the healthiest it’s been in years

I stopped coloring my hair as part of doing all I can think to help prevent dementia. I know of no studies linking hair dye to dementia but common sense tells me putting chemicals on my body can't be good for me. I started dyeing my blonde hair when it became more dishwater blonde rather than gray. I am now turning gray and embracing it.

By 25, I started noticing grays, as did every other 25-year-old friend I had. Because every single person I knew in their 20s was going gray (Gen Xers), I never thought of my 20s as premature graying. It was interesting that is considered premature?

I've been coloring my own hair for many years after being frustrated with the time and cost of salon color, my scalp stinging, the smell, and then often not being happy with the color. Originally I used L'oreal, which had a strong odor and was full of harsh chemicals. The more natural brand of hair color has almost no odor and doesn't sting my scalp at all. There are a couple natural brands available, not counting henna, I prefer NatureTint; -not sponsored, just aiming to save someone the trial and error I went through. I use 2 or 3 different colors to get highlights and lowlights like I had as a young kid. My hair color is similar to Dr Ellis. I use 7A for roots and 10 A for highlights, occasionally I'll use an 8A or 8N for roots and skip highlights. A = Ash = cooler tone, N = Neutral for a warmer tone, more strawberry blonde. This costs less than $20 every 6 - 8 weeks and takes about 90 minutes.

Hello, Just stumbled across this video. I’m curious, my hair will start to turn gray and then all of a sudden will go back to its natural color. I’m 53 and still have the greatest amount of my hair as its natural color. Although there are certainly few strands of gray hair in there. I was just curious as to why, the strand would turn gray and then go back to. It’s natural color.
