Replacing the rear drum brake shoes on a 2001 Ford Escape. Basic procedure, given that there are no major problems removing the drum. Always change BOTH sides...never do only one set of shoes. Covers years 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 models. Includes Mazda Tributes and Mercury Mariners.

Exceptional instructional video - maybe the best I've seen. Very clear photography, excellent lighting, good combination of still and motion images, and it covers every aspect of the job, right down to the final points to check before reinstalling the brake drum. Well done!!

This is one of the best instructional videos I’ve seen. It’s not super fast or choppy where the video skips from “do this” to “done” without showing how. Much appreciated! 😃

Just a tip. Don’t be afraid to wack that drum if need too. Sometimes it takes a good whacking to release a seized drum. This video is perfect 🙏

Yep, the drum gets corroded onto the hub. hit it like ya mean it and it will pop right off. 😆 Similarly, the aluminum wheels will often get sticky to get off their hub. I literally give the tire a good kick and to get the wheel off in that situation.

Listen genius, you are the best in terms of producing instructional videos, I have been watching auto repair videos for some time now, just stumbled on this brake job of yours. To say you are good would be an understatement, you are excellent. Thanks for this exceptional piece of auto work.

Wow, thanks Joel...too kind. I wanted to make videos with the novice in mind. If they're searching KZbin on how to do a repair, it's a pretty good indication that they haven't done it before. I try to include details, and set a pace that doesn't get too far ahead, too quickly. I wanted to have a format that would allow someone to take a phone, laptop, or tablet and just follow along...pause at any time...from start to finish. The lack of audio really bothers some people, but the videos are primarily designed to be practical and informative...not entertaining. There are plenty of good, entertaining repair videos out there. Again, thanks for the compliment (and encouragement)...and thanks for watching!

Yes, you are right, some prefer the audio ones, I prefer your style 100%. Please try to make a video on how to remove and install manual engine’s clutches, and also steering components. I could see that you have posted some of your works on Tie rod removal on your channel but also show us how to remove and fit clutches. Although there are numerous videos on clutches on KZbin but yours will be different because you also include the correct technical terms of components, tools and procedures in your videos.

Very thorough. I like how you put anti seize on the hub. I put anti seize everywhere when I work on my vehicle. That's one reason I like to do repairs myself because I go the extra mile for the next time. Its that extra love that most shops don't do nowadays.

Great video detailing the process, helped me with the replacement of my own- just a few pointers I can provide from my experience this weekend. To get the return spring placed I used a straight pick tool. Hooked the end of the spring around the tool and put the tip of the pick in the hole. Pushed the pick towards the front of the vehicle to guide/slide the spring near the hole and with my other hand and some pliers I was able to guide it in. As for rotating the self adjusting screw, I think it was hitting the spring and not rotating like it should (during the test drive as seen during the end of this video). After getting everything back together and not having brakes or an e-brake I took it all back apart and rotated the adjustment wheel down more. It was a lot more than the half turn recommended. Tested fitting by putting the hub back on with some lug nuts and feeling if the e-brake at least was touching the hub. I'd recommend doing a hub test fitting over allowing the self adjustment screw to do it for you, I think the arm hits it if it's not expanded far enough, after it's past that point it works perfect without interference.

Don't take the emergency brake spring off! Just leave the metal part attached and work around it. It is really troublesome to put back on - I ended up putting it back on with the metal part not attached to anything yet and a helper hooking it in place as I pulled the spring back. Wear leather gloves when pulling this or the big top spring as it can slip and you want to protect your hands from sudden wacks. This video a bit too long with too many ads, but thanks, I really appreciate any help I can get when doing things like this!

Near perfect video thank you; no need for music! Respectfully, I do wonder why you don't replace/rebuild the wheel cylinders. In the old days (I was a 60's mechanic), the cylinder would almost always leak afterwards. If they did not leak immediately, then eventually.

Hi Karl Maybe you can help After I did that job there is anything else I need to do for the brakes?( I have from and rear new breaks) When I'm pressing on the brake pedal or lifting the hand brake there is not resistance it feels to easy to lift but the car do stops. I would love to hear if you have any suggestions. Thank you
@karlrandolph4775
@karlrandolph4775 4 жыл бұрын
@@motieliyahu6643: Make sure you have the rear brakes adjusted properly; that should insure that the emergency brake will pull up with resistance. Second, did you bleed the brakes, assuming you rebuilt/replaced the wheel cylinders? Must get all the air out of the line by "bleeding"all the air out. Hope this helps.

Thanks. Yeah, music would make it more entertaining. But in starting the channel, I decided to make it strictly instructional videos...a video-manual hybrid, so to speak. I use to watch videos where the talking was muffled and the music became irritating, and decided I didn't want to do that. This way, you can take your laptop, tablet or smartphone right to the vehicle and follow along...no need to listen carefully through muffled talking or hard accents on what is being done, and no trying to concentrate through some bad music loops. Hope it helped you get the job done...thanks for watching!

Rear drum brakes stinks it looks obsolete, rusty and dangerous for a on and only V6 SUV already wastes time and money to replace the brake shoes; by the way like 21st century cars most SUVs have disc brakes (with ABS) on each rear ends are easy to replace, repair and safer to brake.
