I got to see this same drum solo in Houston during the same tour. It was mesmerizing seeing this live! The sound quality of a Pat Metheny concert made it even better. This guy is on another level IMO. Short list of my favorite drum influences.

Andrew, if you don't know Pat Metheny too well..... next time you go for a walk, grab a good set of headphones and fire up the album The Way Up from 2005. Antonio is on this album. The ride work is absolutely stunning, but the real joy is Pat's guitar work along with the piano player Lyle Mays. That album is probably not too suitable for the channel due to it being more or less a single album-long piece, but it's not an overstatement to say that Methany is life-changing for any musician that gets into his stuff. This album is as good a place as any to start. (It won a Grammy for best Jazz album, too, so it's not like I'm just fanboying over something obscure : ) )

Amazing stuff. To keep the left foot clave going while playing all these different subdivisions with the other limbs at different dynamics. It just blows my mind. I seem to recall that Antonio wrote the whole soundtrack for "Birdman." He talked about it in an interview in either Modern Drummer of Jonathan Mover's magazine (sorry the name of the magazine escapes me right now).

Thanks Andrew ! Had the great good fortune to see this live. Pat Metheny plays a cover of “Ferry Cross the Mersey” that brings tears. “Last Train Home” and “A Night Away” are masterpieces I’ve heard he was admitted to Berklee at 18, and on the faculty at 19.....I don’t doubt it. He played solo at the Shaolin Liu theater on Cape Ann, 2019, just down the street from us. I went flying down the stairs to the men’s room after the show and almost knocked him over. He just laughed. Drummer ain’t bad either !!! Listen with your eyes closed

How often he switches from matched to traditional- why ? At the start, the smoothness with which his left hand goes from snare clicks to hi-Tom is beautiful to watch. That hand is so relaxed. Then the push-pull of very open block sounds, to a wall of thunder, and back….it’s beautifully written

He’s a freak - amazing hands, so crazy keeping that clave going with his left foot, incredible independence, such clean detail. One of the greatest ever. So musical too and makes great sounds - the subtlety of the hits. Love this dude.

Hi Jesse, all you say I totally agree. I have followed Pat and Lyle since their beginning. My favorite Band. I'd also suggest Pat's 'Secret Story' to add to your must see video...the entire concert. Saw that tour live in Zurich and was totally brought to another universe. The Way Up I saw 3x and the London gig Pat and Lyle were on fire...band too...mind blowing 3 hours of the highest level of compositions and musicianship and sound quality..

One of the best guitarists and an awesome drummer. I really liked this one. Metheny picking the lead, but the other guitarist doing the scattin. Epic. I just love Metheny! Distinctive sound and style. One of my favorite Pickers. I first heard him, like 20 years ago... been a fan since. Even though I'm a chopper, I have a thing for great Pickers. My top 5 list is Really crowded. There's probably 30 players in there.

I've seen Horacio on video doing left foot clave and also playing a samba pattern with his feet, with his left foot going side to side on the hi-hat and the gajate pedal, while soloing on top with his hands. These guys are otherworldly. Just amazing. And, not to take anything away from Antonio Sanchez, Horacio would do all that with a big smile on his face like he was having the time of his life. Players like these guys make me feel like I know nothing at all about music. I can only listen in awe.

@@krenwregget7667 I thought he would be. He looks so happy when he's playing, like he's really grateful to be able to do what he loves to do. And the way he looks at the other musicians seems to show an appreciation of their contribution and he's lucky to be playing with them. A pretty darn good attitude, if you ask me.
