I just saw an interview with him, and he explained specifically why he plays the way he does. Because of his very skinny wirey arms, he injured himself numerous times trying to play with big swinging motions.....so he focused on really developing his finger technique. You can see that pretty clearly in this video. This is one reason why he looks the way he does when playing.....it looks kind of unusual, but is extremely effective! 😏

It's a video of him "exercising." Give him some more views on some other things. Louis is extremely creative on so many different levels. He uses the tools that he has-whether it's due to personal choice or, like most of us, what he is limited to accessing by shear affordability. He creates, composes, performs, records, edits and mixes everything on his own. At least all his solo offerings anyway. His collaborations are always incredible as well. He's a beast.

Seems like the comments are very polarized. I'm among the ones who really liked it. I totally agree with you comment about "thinking outside of the square." Most often it's the contrarians pushing things forward.
@ghostrobot3714
@ghostrobot3714 2 жыл бұрын
Well said. Hopefully, one day we'll see a time where this kind of discordance creates more than just polarization. There's a certain brilliance to this kind of artistic interpretation, that should inspire folks to look past the black/white of 'get it /don't get it', and try to understand WHY things take them out of their comfort zone.

Louis Cole!! My water hole when I need something totally different!! Wasn't expecting you to find him, a fun and pleasant suprise! Yeah, he's certainly different, both as a drummer and composer. He's got his own style (likes to be a bit provocative but also distant and artsy) and his own sound. He has found his sound in the "lo-fi" world, using equipment, microphones, techniques and mixing that most would label as "bad", but I find the overall sound charming and cool! He certainly is a good drummer, and has been featured together with both Snarky Puppy and Vulfpeck. But he's probably one of the most advanced composers of drummers at his level, writing really cool and complex fusion stuff. I'm the kind of person that wants to discover new things in music and grow, and having studied, written, performed, analysed, and listened to music for 30 years, it gets a little harder as each year goes by! Louis Cole has really satisfied the need for something really different than most other music I listen to, while also being interesting and high quality composition wise. I don't like everything he does, or Knower does (sometimes it gets a bit too weird even for me), but I'm strongly enjoying the things I like! Maybe you won't find that much drum-centric material of his, it's more of the case with Dirty Loops - the playing is great and it's there, but a lot of the appealing and cool stuff is in the greater picture. But, I second the suggestion by Etronax: Overtime (Live Band Sesh)! Such incredible musicians - and hilarious video editing! (I've discovered something new every time I've watched it...)

@clurigaconrad
@clurigaconrad 2 жыл бұрын
@@AndrewRooneyDrums No no, it didn't come off as citique! As always, you're very good at conveying that, when you're addressing things that are out of the ordinary. Your observations are always very balanced and have a good perspective. Speaking of Dirty Loops, that was what brought me to your channel in the first place! Really glad you've found them on a deeper level recently! (I've liked them and followed them since the beginning, I studied to Music Producer together with Aron's younger brother, the first time I heard Aron play was on a school assignment his brother had!) I've been thinking of giving you a recommendation for another really interesting and unique Swedish band, but I haven't gotten around to it - so I'm ceasing this moment! ;) The band is called Freak Kitchen, and is led by Mattias "IA" Eklundh, one of Sweden's top hard rock guitarists ever (solo albums released on Steve Vai's label). He loves to explore odd times (even dove into the crazy Indian rhythm world of konnakol) but then combine it with catchy hard rock tunes! Since I myself love that combination, I'm a fan! The drummer, Björn Fryklund, is of course great at odd time/"limb independence" - a requirement in that band... They also have a great sense of humour, and healthy self-distance! I really would like to recommend you to check out this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXKvdHdrZceZbsk&ab_channel=FreakKitchen ...but I'm not sure if the song's title would impact your KZbin views... ;) If it's hard to review that one, this would be a good alternative: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXeoe5p5nadsgcU&ab_channel=FreakKitchen

I would agree that the notable "awkwardness" in his appearance as a drummer & when he plays is definitely an intriguing dynamic to observe overall.., I would describe it as "strangely keyed in & curiously dead set" in an overall unique but unconventional way. Personally I can appreciate his grooves, as I have been a drummer for the past (very nearly) 20 years so it's definitely a huge part of my life and way of thinking, especially in a creative sense- what's more, is that I taught myself, everything, and without sheet music and reading notes. I suppose my point is that I'm an unusual drummer myself, and I happen to have a deep seeded passion for 8-bit/electronic sounding beats & other sorts of things. Nevertheless, hugely admirable this guy is not only with his fantastic time signatures in conjunction with the unique sound he tends to generate otherwise , but as an all around musician. 🐸👌🏻✨️

He makes me regret believing drummers were supposed to play with the right hand lead. When I started on a kit at age 10, I developed a similar style, but believed "great drummers" had to play the ride and hi-hat with the right hand. I'm left handed and had developed almost an identical groove, leading with my left, but seriously believed I was cheating, and not playing like Ringo or Keith Moon, so I taught myself traditional grip playing right handed, trying to emulate Bill Bruford. Hard to do when natural feeling is to use my left as the time keeper. What the hell, I'm 66 and will easily revert back to an open hand style of playing

I do find it strange that the focus of your "one thing" [you say kind of not really critical, but actually it comes across as critical, otherwise you could have just said it was interesting rather than being "one thing" or saying "it's just..."] is the fact he looks unconventional when he plays. If he gets a great and technically accomplished sound, and how his playing looks doesn't hinder his performance, why should it be a basis to have any reservations? Maybe he has developed a technique which differs from the norm but allows him to play better than the norm? That's evolution... (And yes, you do kind of get close to saying so later on, but you still seemed to have reservations anyway)

I dunno about your review on this... He doesn't look like a drummer, he doesn't have good mics, putting cymbals on the heads is weird. You spent more time not talking about his technique. He definitely tried to go for a drum machine style. Very fast, very precise. Has a jazzy feel to it as well. He also plays a pretty mean bass and keyboards. His drumming reminds me a bit of the drummer for the Buzzcocks, very rapid-fire with the fills, very busy. To be fair, I don't know how anybody could teach what he does... He did put out a video on some of his techniques. He is ambidextrous (if you see ClownCore, he plays one-handed about as fast, and is doing a bassline with the other hand on a keyboard). And as someone else said, he's a finger player, not so much arms. I think his bass pedal is tuned to perfection.

Why are you being so awkward about how you actually feel? It seems like you're tentatively saying like "hey this sucks but I'm not saying it" with some guise of being like "it's new" or whatever. "He doesn't look like a typical drummer" who cares?? What's your opinion? It's so weird. Then you take apart the mics? What are you saying brother?
@AndrewRooneyDrums
@AndrewRooneyDrums 2 жыл бұрын
1. I wouldn't post a video of someone I think sucks. 2. "He doesn't look like a typical drummer" is a compliment. ie Stevie Wonder doesn't play/look like a typical drummer. It's actually what makes things interesting. Drummer vs musician. 3. 'Take apart the mics'? Again. Why would an observation on cheaper mics be a critique? I love it. I personally prefer cheap/middle of the road gear. It's really refreshing when things aren't 'perfect'. It's refreshing when things are different. Apologies if I don't have a fully formed opinion/satisfactory conclusion on a completely new drummer within 2 minutes. I'd need/love to see plenty more of Louis before making any style analysis. Thanks for the interest and good questions.

You drink coffee very strangely. You keep holding it in your mouth for a while after you drink it, with your cheeks full, and have this face like you wanna throw up or spit it out lol. To quote the great Little Nicky, try letting the liquid "slide down your throathole" AS you drink it, instead of holding it in your mouth for a while and then swallowing. Probably better for your teeth as well

Louis Cole is in a league of his own. Jacob Collier is dumbed down version for the pleb masses and pretentious musicians. Not only is Louis a better all around musician, he makes good music, and is probably way smarter and more knowledgeable about society etc than the normie pleb Jacob

I don’t respect comments like yours that talk about ‘who is better’ and who is ‘probably way smarter’. You are talking about two master musicians. You don’t know anything about these guys other than their playing videos and interviews. My advice is to try to elevate your expression. “Normie Plebe Jacob?” If that’s so, I’d love to know where you see yourself on your mental ranking scale. Here is a video of Louis and Jacob jamming together. Kinda makes your comment look silly: kzbin.info/www/bejne/roPOaaKafb5nkKc
