The blast to gravity transitions are so fucking clean. If I remember correctly Anthony said it was something he had to practice endlessly. Worth the practice.

Little blastbeat lesson: The "standard" blastbeat is the one where bassdrum and snaredrum are being played alternatingly, with a cymbal or hihat in unison with the bassdrum strokes. The "hammerblast" is the one where bassdrum, snaredrum and a cymbal or hihat are all being played in unison. The "bombblast" is almost the same as the hammerblast, just with the bassdrum at double speed. And the gravity blast is the one where the snare is being played with the drumstick rolling over the rim (often referred to as "single-handed roll"), usually in unison with lightning fast doublebass. Does that all make sense? Thanks for the great videos by the way - I've been a fan of your channel for quite a while now. Keep up the great work. Greetings from Germany! Cheers

Well, this is not white noise, although it does act like white noise. It's like rain, it's a wall of sound, mostly meaningless, that is overwhelmingly thick, that your mind just goes blank. That's why people fall asleep faster, deeper and longer and feel restful when it's raining outside. I guess metal is somewhat the same, a wall of sound, relaxing.

Hi Andrew! Thanks for choosing my recommendation! Much love, and keep up the good work!! To everyone else: I understand the overall music or genre might not be to everyone's taste, but at the end of the day - Andrew is here reacting to drummers. Anthony has proved numerous times through his other bands that he can hold down beats, groove, and odd timings with no issues, I just figured this one in particular is a great display of raw technical ability and stamina obtained through years and years of practice. Hopefully most of you found something to enjoy from it.

One of my favorite bands. I'm not a fan of the massive use of triggers but let's face it they are looking for this clinical and clear sound, which given the speed it is played at is probably a necessity. I think the people commenting negatively on the music fail to see that this is a niche genre which you usually can't get in one take. I've listened to metal basically since i was 10, starting with metallica, then slayer, then cradle of filth, then morbid angel, then behemoth etc. etc. and basically when you get to Beneath the massacre (i mean you could always say like Psyopus is crazier, or cephalic carnage or whatever) it's as extreme as it gets and it requires some "ear training", the same way you would think about some pretty insane jazz. this is not pop which is meant to be consumed right away. But hey, people have different tastes :)
@Virvum_Juggernaut
@Virvum_Juggernaut 3 жыл бұрын
Agreed Cyril. I too cultivated my metal ‘ear’ over time, progressing from Motley Crüe as a child to Metallica, Slayer, Death, Morbid Angel and Deeds of Flesh (with a myriad of other sick bands in between). One must accustom themselves to musicians of this caliber (sans the first 2 lol) by understanding that the skill levels demonstrated are the epitome of instrumentalism. Going from mainstream ‘pop’ 🤮 straight to the top shelf of extreme metal’s elite most def would sound like meaningless noise to the uninformed. Appreciation is helped greatly if you play an instrument yourself, regardless of musical preference. Think I’ll choose Whitechapel’s Somatic Defilement to fall asleep to. Another album that never gets old! The list is gloriously long and only getting longer.

We've finally gotten there. Your reaction video to Alex 'Grind' Pelletier would eventually lead us to Beneath The Massace. And that Infant Annihilator reaction led us to that Despised Icon gem. So glad to see these Canadian extreme metallers getting some love. I've been a fan of Despised Icon and Beneath The Massacre for around 15 years. While both bands had taken hiatuses, they've come back swinging. Montreal is obviously great grounds for this type of music.

I first heard about Anthony when he became the drummer for Babymetal in Sept. 2019 that toured in the US and from the videos I've seen he really plays in the Babymetal style, except when he has a solo during the band solos and was really impressed with his talent.

I guess I'm too old for this music. This guy's technique is amazing, with the one handed rolls, incredibly fast double bass and machine like precision. My hat's off to him. But would I listen to this music? I don't think so. Maybe the fault is in my ears but all I hear is a continuous barrage of rolls. I'm not hearing interesting rhythmic patterns or any dynamics. I'm willing to admit that there may be a lot that is beyond my capacity of hearing or even grasping of the intent here. Is this music a response to the fast paced technology and machinery of today much like the jazz of the swing era evoked the industrialization and proliferation of train travel of that period? Or is it just a case of let's see how fast we can play, a drumnastics event? Because if it is the former, or some other philosophical motif I'm unaware of, well good, more power to it, even if it isn't my cup of tea. But if it is the latter, then I'm not really interested. I believe that technique should serve the music and not be an end in of itself. I realize that many of your audience will be angry with my comments. They may say that I'm just envious of his ability; There is probably some truth in that. Or they may say that I'm just biased in my musical tastes; Also true to some extent. Again they may say that I just can't hear the nuances going on; Definitely true. Anyway, that's my take. Thanks Andrew, as always, for providing good content.

im hearing what youre saying, not unreasonable. But I would STRONGLY disagree that a single note of this band is for speed's sake. Its the same dynamic of old Hard-bop like you kinda mentioned where it can be completely indecipherable to a casual listener and not only "not sound good" but sound bad and jarring. If you did consume their discography, which im def not asking you to do, I think you'd see that youre kinda on the right track. Extremely dense, mostly up-and-down patterns, no real "color" in the rhythm. But its something visceral when a song like this can put you in a place where you're following that virtuostic(yet 280bpm) guitar sweeping, AND noth losing track of the blast rhythm. Idk I definitely can level with your perspective because I really WANTED to love this stuff after I saw them live, so I began to love it : )

@@Quake18 Thanks for your input. I really do appreciate it. Your comparison to bebop seems to me to be apt. Another example could be free jazz, which most definitely goes over my head. And I'm glad to know that the music featured in the video is not just about speed. Also, I do appreciate how difficult it must be to play this music, beyond the technical aspect. It must require a lot of mental discipline to maintain focus and awareness of where one is in the piece.

I'll have to echo the fellow before me, your "first impression" is right on the money in a sense.. I've been a drummer in this genre longer than a decade now and bands like Beneath The Massacre can be borderline nonsense for someone not used to even something like the PACING of these songs, let alone all of the musical choices they make at that pace. This album in particular took about 3 or 4 full listens before I reeeally caught on to what they were doing on each instrument (vocals included) and that sort of "emergent complexity" became evident You're also right that this genre can dip into playing notes for the sake of playing notes, it's been my experience that the bands who execute this music at a high level (such as BTM) are not involved in that gimmick but are instead walking a fine line between olympic-level speed/endurance/chops required simply to enter this genre, and the musicianship and wherewithal it takes to master arranging/composing in such a genre. Bands of lesser ability attempting to make this music would be a good target for the criticisms you have, but I believe that the few bands at the top of their game in this genre are really pushing the boundaries of modern drumming/music in a very cool way

Now everything sounds the same. I can always go back to Morbid Angel, Death, Entombed, Gorguts and the likes... So yeah, these guys have talent, but talent is best when being in company with soul, insteasd of "Lets make a song where we just go fast and technical"
