This is hands down the best drum cover I've ever heard. I've been playing drums 20 years and I've never seen anything like this. He is so innovative in the way he uses the drums, and event hough he's doing a lot of flashy stuff, it's so tasteful and compliments the music so well.
@burgerbobbelcher
@burgerbobbelcher Жыл бұрын
I'd say flashy stuff is a sort of rite of passage for any upcoming musician. Dude hasn't been in the public eye for very long, he's put in his hours, he's finding his fame, he'll be flashy, and then he'll tire of it, and enter the final stage of a musician's evolution, appreciating silence.
@RingsWorkshop
@RingsWorkshop Жыл бұрын
@@burgerbobbelcher I would agree with this if all he did was the flashy stuff. You take away the stick flips, one handed stuff and smiles and the technique he is using is still absurd and that is what matters. He's doing stuff that no one else has done, not stuff that only looks cool, but it also sounds great. That's why it matters. What he is doing will sound different when you listen to music, which is the entire point. No one can hear a stick flip, but they can hear double bass with a high hat going as normal and 16th notes on another high hat...that is different That's why it's special.

You missed how he ended up with three sticks. I had to slow it down to 25% to see it. He bounces the right stick off the drum, and while it is in the air he transferred the left stick to the right hand, then caught the airborne stick while already holding a stick in his right hand, and with the empty left hand pulls a third stick from the waist. Then proceeds on the next beat using two sticks with the right hand.

I guess I agree that he does "ruin" songs. With this song, I can't listen to the original anymore because El Estepario Siberiano ruined it for me. His version is just too good, I can't go back to the original - no disrespect intended there either. The original is a banger but El Estepario's is just so much better in my opinion. If this is overplaying, he can overplay everything he want's and I will gladly listen.

The reason it’s considered “over played” is because the focus of the song in his version is the drummer whereas the focus on the original is the weekend. In estepario’s version the drums are essentially the lead singer with the weekends vocals providing backup. I dont think he ruins songs he just changes the focus

Andrew you do such a thoughtful and yes entertaining take on reactions. None morre so than on El Estepario. Your comments seem so in tune with everything I've heard from El himself on drumming so a really nice synchronicity there. You touched on something here that I feel gets overlooked amongst all the incredible chops and musicality. His video prep. I'm new to knowing of El but I've been a huge fan of drumming for over 50 years now. What I started realizing early on in watching El is his drum set-up is different for every video. The drums, moon gels, 5lb. weights, head tightness, which drums, cymbals, high hats, recording. Every single aspect of his set-up is done for that exact song?! I know other drummers may switch their toms or a cymbal or two but he switches everything to achieve a sound he apparently hears in that amazing mind of his. That is dedication of a whole other variety. Plus I've checked out VARUS drums. Cause, you know. VARUS drums? They have some of the coolest, sexiest, best looking sets I've ever seen. Really unique and original plus the great sound. I'm not completely sure but perhaps El has some officail involvement with the firm? He's to VARUS what Jesus would be if he were selling bibles. Love your stuff. Thanks.

Best drumming reaction channel. Most "drummers" are using EES as a springboard for their channel. YOU actually react, explain and give credit where its due. Great approach to a tired genre of YT videos. As far as the original sound of the song, EES version would take away from the simple groove and flow of the vocals if performed this way live or in studio. Emphasis is and should be on the vocalist. everything else is there to accentuate the vocals. With that said, EES really took a simple percussion track and brought it to life, gave it vibrancy. That, on it's own made the song anew. It's refreshing.

El estapario is showing us what is possible with whacky ideas that may have been dismissed before. The dualist pedal, 2 sticks in 1 hand, 1 handed covers. He does all of those and more while maintaining a high technical difficulty as well as musicality. Times sure have changed but now a days the most influential man in drumming is just some dude on KZbin. For some people, it's hard to accept.

To expand on the point you're making later in the video about appreciating the artistry but not necessarily wanting to emulate it yourself, this is exactly HOW art evolves. El Estapario has taken what came before him and pushed it forward and now other people, like you, get to look at it and instead of simply copying it they can incorporate and twist what he's doing to improve and advance their own styles. He might be one of the giants of drumming that others will stand on to someday elevate the craft even further. It's not a diss, it is the ultimate sign of respect for another artist.

I always love hearing people say he doesn't have rhythm or groove. This is another example that can be used to prove they are the ones who don't have those specific things. If you can't get a sense of his time skills and all other then you don't know what you're listening to... I'm not even a drummer and I can hear it. Uts insane to see how people can actually hate on such a pure set of skills that has been crafted over countless hours of practice that seems impossible to most. He's stated many times it's not talent. Sure he's got natural talent but you listen tonhis earlier stuff and you can hear just how far he's come. He's the truest testament of anyone can achieve it with practice.

He is the hero that drumming needs. As a guitar player, I've always had a fascination with drums. To me, it's by far the hardest instrument to play as the head space required to do some of those feats is off the charts. And my man, you keep doing what you're doing. I recommend everyone to watch this video a couple of times and focusing on one limb at a time because otherwise you will miss something crazy. I just noticed that he´s also hitting the rim with his right hand. Using two sticks in one hand on that hihat to hit it from underneath as well as hitting it from top is brilliant. What I love about this guy is he doesn't just play the drumskins. He plays everything that will make a suitable noise. In this one's he's gravity dropping onto the left hand stick for that sharp crack sound. He is a percussionist, not a drummer. If it makes a noise when you hit it, whether it's a drum, stick, coffee cup or kitten, it's all fair game.

I grew up around Country, Pop & Dance in the 70's & 80's. This style music to me was just noise. Thank you EES for opening my eyes. I Love this song, (and most of the Shorts EES plays, the sound, everything about it. It does sound a lot like Aha, which does one or two of their songs too. You can't blink when EES is performing. You noticed the two sticks in his pants before the song. You didn't catch the fact that now he's playing the right cymbal with two sticks. The way he gets an extra stick is what you need to see. TWICE you missed it. Andrew, you should know by now that you don't look away while this monster's playing. He tossed an extra stick from his pants to his right hand, caught it with a stick already in his hand, all without missing a beat.

I understand exactly what youre saying. Im hot a drummer but I find it so intereting to get a drummers perspective of what's going on. When Peart, Copeland, Portnoy, Weckle play its easy for me to see their greatness. But for someone like Ringo its not apparent for me. But elite drummers say he is, so ive got to take note and see what theyre talking about. It gives me a better understanding and love for music.

I swear to god this man has an extra brain for JUST his legs Edit: also important to note, this is the ONLY song I have seen this man play that comes even CLOSE to straining him. What when he first starts the double high hat THING he doin. It is the sign of effort I've ever seen on his face

What makes this the MIND boggling is he's toggling his base peddle between single and double. So, add in a completely evolutionary independent mind task never thought possible before.

Im not a drummer but I love music and I replaced some original songs in my car with his covers, it is just sounds clear and amazing. I hate to say that I enjoy more than many originals. I have to add that for decades the drummer was always left for the background unimportant music but this guy tells everybody Hey the drummers can change the music and be the protagonist of it without affecting anything else negatively, on the contrary making the general sound amazing. To me he is saying to all other drummers, Hi guys we can make things much better. lets do it.

I really appreciate your point about art being a personal choice, there is no right or wrong, it's self expression and that's what counts. El Estepario isn't a robot, even if his drumming is almost machine like, his personality shines through every time he plays. It's the ultimate in unique self expression, like a Hendrix or a Van Halen.

I've watched your review twice and many others, but no one mentions the incredible stick trick of when pulls the third drumstick while spinning one passing the other catching the spinning stick without missing a beat and does it twice.. let alone all the other cool stuff. He is the goat.

Great analysis as always. My points about what he does is that he enjoys what he is doing and it comes through on his videos. Secondly amazes me that every song is a single take, no splicing of attempts. I think your best take on him is his musicality. Been to lots of shows where the drum solo is the same beat for 5 straight minutes. All of “tricks” come within the structure of the song and makes it a pleasant listen. Keep up the great channel.

Every song is one take of many though. It's still impressive, but it being the 37th take is a better way to describe it. He reminds me of speed runners in gaming in a way. One perfect take of one perfect run.

I've always thought that a gimmick is when someone finds an odd or unique way to do something and then proceeds to make sure that they continue to do it every chance they get, even up to the point of consciously trying to find a way or an excuse to do it whenever they can (as in "Hey look what I can do, and how I do it). I think here he just had a sound that he wanted, and found a way to find an extra "hand" to achieve that. In other words it's a solution, not a gimmick, I've watched most of his vids and he doesn't consistently and repetitively do weird stuff just to set himself apart, he doesn't need to, his skill and creativity are enough. I love his drum covers and I love coming to this channel to see Andrew react to El Estepario, or Yoyoka or whomever else. There's a lot I get to see here that I otherwise wouldn't simply because I didn't even know to look for it, so I appreciate everyone who makes suggestions to Mr. Rooney as well. Flashy stick tricks btw are not gimmicks either, they're just fun :D

It brings me pleasure seeing reactions to El Estepario Siberanio, especially by skilled musician. I get to see them go through the same thing I did over two decades ago, when I quit drumming, after realising I wws never going to be as good as my peers.

I really apologize, I have played a kick drum and snare on time once, but I honestly come here to watch your reviews of El Estepario Siberiano because you actually know what you are doing and can point out things that us newbs would never catch on to. A recent controversy happened with reaction videos where these kids were going to make dinner or go to the bathroom in the middle of a video, and you actually care about this because it is fantastic.

I used to play the drums (I thought proficiently), then I discovered the genius and hard-working EES human grove machine. Ive decided drawing stick men is more my level. Virgil Donati has pro-level 4 way independence - EES is next level again.

Playing any instrument, just like singing as well requires one to be themselves and find their own sound. With vocals I have no problem on imitating likes of Randy Blythe, Shagrath, Mikael Åkerfeld, Tatiana Smailyuck etc. when I'm training since I can mix their styles and incorporate something new to my own sound. Same with Bass. Cliff Burton, Wolstenholve, Paul d'Amour, Justin Chancellor and various black metal bands really influences on my style of playing, but that's it. Only influence, just like El Estepario does for drummers and even someone like me who understands drums but will never be capable of proficient play with 'em. The own sound/style may be hard to find, but when you do the training only begins.
