Kollias is one of the greatest for sure. His work in Nile is legendary and he's been an Inspiration and influence for definitely more than one generation of drummers, from the beginning of the 2000s onwards (correct me if i'm wrong though) As of now, there are ofc drummers in relatively recent years that develop into an influence on metal drumming as Kollias is, maybe overshadow his presence on social media in numbers, but as of now definitely not replace him in any way. I don't think (and hope) he'll ever lose his position as one of the best Extreme Metal Drummers of all time

He's done a lot of work, both in and out of greece. Started with a band called Extremity Obsession which if i am remembering correctly only had a tape demo in the mid-90s with george, but the band has since moved to more proggy stuff and still write albums. There's quite a few "extreme" metal bands in greece that have known some success outside of the country and until the economy went to poopy, it was quite popular for touring bands (check out iced earth's live dvd in athens. I think i twas iced earth?)

I know what you mean, and I feel it is because of so much on youtube that you can learn these techniques so fast these days, and tbh metal drumming isn't usually 'hard' but more fast. Please don't hate me for saying that, all I mean is that I learned more technique trying to play jazz or afro-cuban then when I was covering Dying Fetus. When I started learning death metal in the 90's I had to just listen to the albums and assume what they were doing to play that fast. Now I can find a video on 3 ways to play double bass fast, and then it's just a matter of time to build the speed. John Longstreth said he played jazz and knew double stroke rolls on the snare, and he assumed metal drummers were doing doubles on the bass drums and that's why he's so good at them now. I love to see younger drummers playing extreme metal these days, but also knowing I was learning Cryptopsy in 2002, but nowadays people are like Flo Mounier who? I try to keep up with the times, it's hard there's a lot of bands, but I also learned a lot from Buddy Rich video's, and think it's important to know the roots of drumming techniques. Drum sets have only been around 120 years or so, and not much of the technique has changed.

Seriously what blows me away is on top of the speed and precision is the creativity and musicality of everything. The polyrhythm he does, even when blasting, are crazy. THere is so much going on, I mean this really displays the crazy level Metal drummers can reach, in case anybody was doubting it.

George Kollias is one of the oldest extreme drummers out there, one of the OGs, along with Derek Roddy, Pete Sandoval. I'd say those are the grandfathers of fast drumming, blastbeats and double-kicks.

George is a pillar for sure. I love his playing. Not only is he insanely fast but his knack for creating parts that fit and his seemingly endless array of fills just seem to always work. I love his style so much. He's a super cool guy too, loves the instrument and always hyping other players. Class act on all levels

George Kollias is definitely top ten and so is Contrarian. They are probably one of the more serious/respectable progressive death metal bands around too. FYI, they have had not only George, but Patrice Hamelin, Bryce Butler, Alex Cohen play with them.

George has moved to Zildjian, be interesting to hear if there's a slight difference to his sound with another cymbal brand (probably not); great playing here with mad orchestration despite the breakneck speeds.
@uglypineapple03
@uglypineapple03 2 жыл бұрын
That was really weird, actually. Seeing him change the cymbal brand, it's strange not imagining him playing Sabian, yk (I obviously understand switching Cymbal Brands, to evolve the own sound etc, it was still really... odd, yk)

@@uglypineapple03 Just watched a video of a rig run down and he says he started on Zildjians and is so glad to be back to them. He didn't disparage Sabian just said that Zildjian is where he wanted to be.
@craigstrickland1572
@craigstrickland1572 2 жыл бұрын
The sound isn't that different live but you can see that the Zildjians he plays live are heavier metal and of course, that means longer sustain but they don't recover as quickly as the Sabians.

I still maintain - you need to check out Hellhammer's drumming in the song The Chosen Legacy by Dimmu Borgir ;) Sadly, as far as I am aware, there is no live recording or drum cam of the song with him on drums, so you'll need to listen to the album version, but trust me, it's worth it :) Apart from that, great reaction as always, thank you very much sir!

Definitely one of the best. I got to meet him at one of the shows we were playing I believe around 2006 or so. Nice guy. If I remember right he was a student of greek jazz legend Yannis Stavropoulos when he was in his late teens. He was already super fast back then. He's definitely achieved legend status! Yannis is another drummer you need to check out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYG5lIB6ppyorc0

George Kollias started as a jazz drummer and you can see he really utilized it in learning metal. George is a amazing drummer he is one of the best and one of the fastest there are other guys on his level. I really like Anthony Lopez from Satans host he has some of the best 32nd on his feet and the tempo isn’t that fast but the way he doesn’t I’m always in awe because of how well he does it at 50+ yrs old. You should check him out I don’t know if there videos of him especially on the song this legacy will never die.

@@GeorgeTsiros He was Jazz drummer in Cypress way before that he started playing drum like he said at 12 but had already played piano and guitar but fell in love with the drums and decided that was the instrument he would focus on. Nile is the first band he played 240 bpms and above. He talks about that but every drummer likes playing different music and concepts since it gives you a better understanding of theory. Hellhammer has stated the same thing as George he would rather play slower tempo stuff because it does lend itself better to more concepts and theory.

I would like to share one encounter I had about 20 years or so. I once, young and silly as I was, asked a drum teacher "how fast can you play the kick drum, with your feet?", as if it was some kind of measure of ability... He was a bit surprised, but still, very politely and simply, responded "what do you mean? As fast as I can play with my hands." Back then, that made sense to me. Now, I am a bit confused.

I find it especially frightening how George's drumming puts the music on all those non-Nile gigs on such an elevated new level. The rest of the music is quite on par stuff with serious Chuck Schuldiner influences but George just turns it into a shred fest and qualifies the end product for the first league.

Would it be in the realm of possibility that you could embark on a little project where you would teach yourself to play some metal? Songs by Metallica and Slayer could possibly be within your ability, they do have complex songs, but they also have simpler stuff. Just find a few songs you think you'd be comfortable with, maybe put up a poll and let your subscribers select the song. Then make a video or stream showcasing the journey and the end result. Could be a fun experience and you'll end up with more tools in your toolbox. Might bring more subs too.
