As I learned from Jason Lamb',s excellent book on NoMeansNo, Soundgarden were heavily influenced by NMN, they were big fans! Also fun fact about this song: The guys from Faith No More were also massive fans . They had this song blasting through the speakers before they would come on stage in their 1990 tour.

Nice to see someone checking out Nomeansno for the first time. Worth noting that John started as a jazz drummer and plays with a traditional grip. Wrong is a great album, but I'm not sure this song is where I'd introduce a person to them. Maybe The River or Jubilation since they are both fairly straightforward. The day that everything became nothing or Something dark against something light for more out there examples.

Rob wright on bass and his brother John wright on drums. John studied as a jazz drummer prior to starting this in 1979. The 1st album is almost entirely bass and drums. This is 1 of 2 closing tracks on whats generally considered their apex album. Difficult to label and that's one of the points of the band. Dead Souls is a straight mosh track that's super short, yet this song is prog punk. They've got acapella, blues, psychology, love songs and they love The Ramones. See them live and they switch all this stuff up on you and stop in the middle of a guitar solo and engage in banter. Fun stuff

I can recall only one show where a mistake was made, by all 3 of them, and they were so pissed off about it I couldn't even bring myself to mock them for it. The whole album is genius level playing and composing and is my fave of theirs but the rest are worth looking into if this strikes your fancy. They are definitely a punk band, just one of the most refined punk bands ever. This is one band that you absolutely do not want to have them play before your band as they will own the joint. They did an a cappella version of the Dead Kennedy's, Looking Forward to Death, which is stunning.

I had a hissy fit at my friend and asked him to turn that garbage off... It just did not compute with me at the time, too advanced and quick. However shortly after it became my most loved record of all and it still is to this day, thirty odd years later. I saw them live a few times, once they played with two drummers at once, insane ! NomeansNo never chased the big $$$ they were in it because they loved what they were doing . 'Wrong' their best album and it is totally underrated and strangely little known, from start to finish quick paced genuis, skillfully timed, jazz influence but not pretentious. Top Shelf!

John Wright was a major influence on my own drumming and the band opened up a lot of narrow minded punkheads. I grew up with prog and glamrock, but early punk was a reaction to that, and digging Pink Floyd and King Crimson aswell as Pistols & Buzzcocks was considered not done. But luckily then came Dead Kennedy's , Crass, The Ex and later on NoMeansNo to give a lecture on real musical anarchism aswell as on great musicianship. Another worthwile piece of knowlegde about the band is that John is also a trained pianist who writes most of the songs on the instrument. Check the album "Mama" which was their very first cassette release, later re-released on cd. That album is almost smooth jazz, compared to "Wrong".

For a completely different vibe and a very drum-domimated song, but again in the 'punk' sphere, a reaction to Public Image Ltd's (PIL's) 'Banging the Door' from their 1981 LP 'Flowers of Romance' would be very nice.

On this same album there are a good few more complex songs than this one. And the whole LP is connected, non-stop. Each side at least. And the drummer is just ultra tight, however long it goes on, however hard and fast, or complex with it. It's a marvel to witness live.

If punk drummers interest you, and particularly unique, skilled, and imaginative ones, then a Minutemen song is a must. George Hurley. If you find their movie 'We Jam Econo' on KZbin, then at 15:50 you get the story of him joining and then various people explaining their reaction to his playing, and him explaining a little too, then they use the song 'Beacon Sighted Through Fog' as an example. So maybe a listen to that song would be good. Also it's an apt song it that it's exactly one minute long. Though they have plenty of stuff, and 'Double Nickels on the Dime' is their most acclaimed album, where songs also start to get longer, though generally still a minute and a half or two minutes, and only one on the LP being over 3 minutes (3:05). Also he and bassist Mike Watt formed fIREHOSE after guitarist D. Boon's death, so that may be a good source of something to listen to too. Kind

Lol those dissonant parts are a bit of a tough listen, huh? It takes a few listens. I first heard them around the time this album was released, but I bought the album Sex Mad, from 86, sometime around this time. Took me a while to warm up to it, but then one day it clicked, and I love them now! Their Andy Kerr albums have such a great sound to them! Also, I forgot to mention, but several of the albums from, I think, 93-97ish, the band had two drummers. Shades of Genesis, Allman Bros, Butthole Surfers, Pink Fairies, Hawkwind, and many others. Yes, it definitely falls into that mid-to-late-80s Alternative scene, and its clear they have similar influences as Soundgarden, et al. Punk, Hardcore, Black Sabbath, KISS, Ted Nugent, and even though the punkers rebelled directly against the Progressive aesthetics of extended jams, intricate arrangements, and complicated playing, its abundantly clear that they were, nonetheless, influenced by Progressive, especially Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, and King Crimson. If for no other reason, than that Tony Iommi’s intent for Sabbath was to be a Progressive band, and Sabbath, in many ways, def were progressive, in that their rhythm section were both solid Jazz-based players, who werent afraid of throwing the Jazz influences about, freely, and the band’s sound progressed from album to album.
