@drumurrrgh4 жыл бұрын
One of the things you didn't comment on which really makes him stand out to me is that when he does those "gallop" or burst patterns with his feet (e.g. 3:26), he's going foot to foot. Most drummers would just go RLR RLR RLR RLR, but this guy is one of those that goes RLR LRL RLR LRL, which is just such a marker of a truly spectacular death metal drummer to me. Mario Duplantier of Gojira is another one that does this, most notably on the songs The Art Of Dying, and Pray.

I really think you have to train that way. Ambidextrous, right. But the simpler way to think of it is that you obviously can’t have one side stronger than the other without having very noticeable limitations.
@drumurrrgh4 жыл бұрын
@@briankennedy1313 Yeah absolutely, but I think it's becoming more of a thing these days, especially amongst Tech and Prog metal drummers. Let's be real, every genre not using a double pedal can get away with having at least the left leg being a "weak limb", in the modern metal subgenres there is nowhere to hide. Even with hands, I don't see many other genres doing as much switching of the lead hand across the kit as modern metal drummers do currently.
@hazardeur4 жыл бұрын
never thought that is very impressive or odd.... i do gallops the "other" way just it always seemed way more efficient to me and therefore way more natural. if you constantly do RLR, you put way too much emphasis on your right foot, overworking it. And especially if you play long shows, you search for every point of stress relief on overworked limbs you can get Also, i would be surprised if for most people developing a solid RLR LRL pattern takes significantly longer than getting the RLR at the same speed down. I think it's pretty equal in terms of difficulty and time to learn it
@drumurrrgh4 жыл бұрын
@@hazardeur you are definitely the exception here. RLR RLR RLR (as 16ths in simple time) means your right just does constant 8ths, and the left fills in the gaps. I think this is probably "Route 1" for most people, especially playing it on hands, because then your "strong side" gets to lead all the way through. I totally agree though going RLR LRL is definitely more efficient, and better in the long run, and it's probably how we should all learn to do it from the beginning.

The guy is exquisite: control, variety, creativity, touch/feel... the nuances to his playing and all the odd time signatures yet he flows like a beautiful river and navigates the song so beautifully that he plays the right stuff to accompany the music but also enhance it. One of the best. I just wanted to say that he has played in an amazing Jazz/Fusion band - kzbin.info/door/LRkiz8mR90hxPjsnXdMvGA - and the latest release was some of the best drumming I've heard for a while. And then I forgot that he did the drumming, not a suprise. Obscura are amazing. Thanks for highlighting this guy as he's up there and breaks free of genre's but still manages to play in 'extreme' settings. Thanks again. :)

When you watch drummers playing at this level of difficulty what are you thinkin??Oh what he is doing these things is unplayable or Ok he is good but i can play too like this easily??? I'd say this is one of Sebatians/Obscura's less aggressive songs, which is cool in some respects in that it showcases other aspects of his playing. At the same time, it was less impressive (which is a ridiculous statement because of how complex this song is to perform this pristine), compared to virtually any other Lanser/Obscura play through. Andrew seemed less blown away compared to other reactions, which I put down to the song choice. Also, Sebatians work with Panzer Ballet is whoa!
