Mangini is an absolute animal. I've grown tired of people comparing him to Portnoy, etc. This man is actually insane, the double bass runout at 2:55 is full on blast beat. I love the texture he brings to DT these days, heavy and tasteful. He didn't "fill in" for Portnoy, he started a new chapter for DT.

Portnoy is Back and to be fair I am happy, Mike Mangini is amazing but it is missing what made it DT , I don't blame him for that as John Petrucci has been writing all the Music but what made everyone miss MP was he brought his musical tastes into the Band and was the co writer with John so when MP was loving say Muse you could hear the influence in the songs or if he was digging Modern Metal you get Train of Thought plus he was the concept guy so you don't get Scene's from a Memory or any of the Album's that felt like one cohesive piece Mangini can hopefully find a Gig playing with someone just as big or bigger. But MP being back feels like Dream Theater again to me.

This man had already taken Dream Theater’s drumming and music to new heights. Speaking as a drummer, I can say that the drumming on JUST THIS SONG is without a shadow of a doubt the most complicated playing he has done for Dream Theater yet, and is so far out of the ball park, this track will live in drumming legend for decades to come. Truly unbelievable. As someone else has said, the fact that he was a professor at Berklee is, on this track, glaringly obvious. You could write a thesis on the drumming in this track, covering the rhythms utilised, sympathetic voice application to the track (hats, stacks, ride, etc), left right lead and switching (hand and feet), multiple simultaneous time signatures (keeping the groove while following other instruments with one hand), power and control, the list goes on - all for 9 minutes of prog drumming. This stuff is truly seminal, and the playing on this track is a landmark in drumming history.

@@aelechko Marco and Lang were both incredible, but I think Marco would have been wasted in DT. Before Mike joined Dream Theater, he had a job teaching at Berklee. Is it any surprise that not only can he play his ass off, but that he can do it with some of the most polished technique around? To get that teaching gig, he HAD to have the kind of stuff that could mostly be taught, that was transferable to others. Because transferring that was his job. He couldn't be a Buddy Rich - flailing all over the place, but it somehow came out sounding perfect because of his one-in-a-billion physical gifts. Also, Mike's a small guy playing a big kit, so he has to be controlled.

Think that what you meant by "in control" could be also expressed by "economy of motion" - in the sense of not lifting the stick any more higher than one needs in order to subsequently hit the next note exactly at the power one needs, therefore distributing / economizing the power / motion. That makes the playing look visually much easier than it in fact is, not just for drums but for a lot of instruments. I think Kai Hahto also said somewhere that when he was already pretty established, he took lessons from some drummer and that the thing he learned at a relatively advance point in his career is that the space between the hits is just as important as the hits themselves, which I think is a nod to what is at stake here. ;-)

I think the info on the video is meant to say that Mike practice the song at 110% the original speed. I suppose that's at good way to get the control for the songs in their original tempo.

If you get a chance, check out his pedal setup! Some time ago I saw his full DT tour setup, and I believe he had a kick on each side, 3 remote hat pedals on the left and I think 2 on the right. I assume trhey were all remote hat pedals anyway. Mike has phenomenal control. His dynamics and precision are over the top!

My two favourite Mangini performances are his rehearsal vid of the Steve Vai song "Here And Now" (with Devin Townsend on vocals, Terry Bozzio played on the album), and his solo piece as a member of Extreme before he joined Vai's band. The latter performance is just crazy good.

Mike is a freak of drumming nature. His mind is a drumming computer. Seriously listen to him talk about playing on his "GRID" videos. Not for everyone. Mike is totally out in space about his technique. It works for him. He's so freaking good that I don't even bother trying to learn his chops. Nor could I.

Another thing is amazing in Mike Mangini is of course the orquestration that he puts into the music that he general plays. At the past you see the same level at Steve Vai songs. I don't know if know this... but he have the record of speed of hands and feets at "drummers world". Check that contest in KZbin. I have already been in a workshop at 2009... he is a alien drummer!

I've been fortunate to work with some freaky guitarist's over the past ten years. A lot of these guys played Yngwie inspired arpeggio passages and some of my fills needed to follow them. That was some fun stuff! I have a couple on the song Letting Go by Bloodline Riot. Unfortunately the producer / engineer shit all over that track. There is one obvious sextuplet fill where I ascended that he turned into 32nds. I was furious, but the producer was dangling carrots in front of the band leader. Good news is that that band leader has a new project, and we're going into the studio to record new material, where I'm doing a few of those fills. I think I even did a couple on Teargas In August by Dave Coutts. He used to sing for the first STP side project, Talk Show. It's his first release on a label. I think someone posted it here on KZbin... Anyways, I typically do that when following a guitar passage that warrants it. With that Bloodline Riot track were specifically going for a "prog-esque" moment.

As you mentioned the words "so melodic " ,at beginning of song b4 the vocals ,DT does what DTs always been known for ,reimagining certain breaks from already known songs ,and playing them out in their music ,and right here is a tribute ,or homage to MP ,by sticking in a touch of the song "Hells Kitchen",from our fave DT album ,"FALLING INTO INFINITY". JUST a heads up ,and its brilliant.

I was going through some old records the other day, and I got to Cerrone. Sure, Cerrone isn't a modern technical perfection drummer, but he is that old er school of pure rhythm. You should dig into some of his stuff. I also found out that he still makes new music.

Fellow Kiwi here. I saw Mike play on a Steve Vai tour back in the late 1990s at the Power Station in Mt Eden. After the concert I decided to call him an Octopus because he plays like he has more than 4 limbs. As you may suspect he is completely ambidextrous, sometimes I think he switches hands just because he can as there doesn't seem to be any logical reason for it.

Mike Mangini is an alien, and this is the song of his people. Regarding his stick height and control, I think he gets a lot of power in his strokes because his technique is derived from his upper and lower arm muscles. It's not the typical technique most people use. I could be wrong, but I think that could be it.

I love this is a tour prep video. A lot of people don't understand how hard real musicians work to get to that place where you and 40,000 of your friends end up at that stadium show. These guys put in thousands of hours of repetition, doing this when they are playing in bars and tiny clubs. "How do you get to Carnegie hall? --- PRACTICE"
