Hell to the YEAH! My life's mission as a drum teacher is to turn my students on to the brilliance of Pete Thomas, the musician's drummer

With you 100% on how understated Pete is. You only have to see his reaction when Elvis introduces Pete during a live show, he’s not about solos, but he has the chops. Anybody want to hear the man’s abilities check out his work on the Costello album Live at El Mocambo - Mystery Dance, Lipstick Vogue etc. Pete plays for the song and complements any bassist, especially Bruce. A drummer’s drummer in my opinion. One of my favorites.

Great clip. Thanks for posting. And, yes, the mighty, mighty Pete Thomas is so underrated. The pride of Sheffield!

Born in 1977 as well, and an absolutely HUGE Costello and Waits fan (and Nick Lowe) of musicians (and really artists of all kinds) who focus on the lyrics/words, because that is what hits me. Yes, Costello has frustrated me quite a bit because his use of words is so brilliant and eloquent it makes me feel the same as when I saw John Entwistle live and then had to put my bass in the closet for a year or so....because why? Costello has actually taught me words - many just in "Tramp the Dirt Down." Greed and avarice (had to look up avarice just to confirm); "And the future looked as bright and as clear as The black tarmacadam" - again, had a moment where had to learn that was the full name for tarmac. Another one (I could go on for days) that just blows me away is from The Other End of the Telescope: 'Cause late in the evening as I sit here moping With a bamboo needle on a shellac of Chopin And the cast-iron heart that you failed to tear open I mean, come on!!!!

How about a little love for Bruce Thomas, the original bassist? He played on 22 of Elvis top 25 songs and the group was never the same without him.

Pete Thomas in the 90s was a big session drummer who often worked on albums produced by Mitchell Froom (who could call on the best in the business; Jerry Marotta and Jim Keltner also showed up on albums he produced). He was on my favourite Richard Thompson record (Mirror Blue) and one of Suzanne Vega's from the same era (Nine Objects of Desire).

I'm not sure if anyone mentioned it prior, but the reason Elvis introduced himself from Dave's desk was that he was actually filling in for Dave that night. Dave was off with a medical issue. I haven't seen it since it went out, but I remember him being pretty good in the role too.

his top american charting song was Veronica (I remember he did it on SNL) but I would think that "Alison" was his most known song but I might just be being old.

Though an American, I've found my taste in pop (or "rock") drumming runs almost exclusively to English players, particularly Aynsley Dunbar (Frank Zappa), Keith Moon (Who), and Ginger Baker (Cream). Somewhat more recently, Pete Thomas has been among my favorite drummers, along with Steve White, drummer for Style Council and Paul Weller's solo band(s). Thanks for posting this and check Steve out sometime (and his brother, Alan--not the one that drummed for Yes--who played for Oasis).

I'd have thought that Pump it Up would have been Elvis's most famous song in America. Probably is in Canada, by my guess.

Hey Steve... A great recent release of The Band in concert from June 1976 is on the KZbin channel "Just A Account". The sound is very clear, with Levon's drumming coming through beautifully. .....Video is called " The Music Inn" .

To me, it always comes down to them getting to the lyrics - yeah, these bosses could play at speed, but damn it, EC has some crap to say!!!! That's hw opens my mind.

While watching your commentary, I said “spot on” right before you did. Thanks for the well-deserved attention to and praise for Pete Thomas - an absolute beast of a drummer in my book. As an Elvis Costello fan I’m sure you’ve seen this, but it’s always a good revisit for each of The Attractions’ performances but especially for Pete’s… I mean, DAMN. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHW5dYGtiJ53qK8
