Fun series idea. Signature gear is usually good for most people that is a fan of that particular artist, but for someone to go through some of the options will help some people who might be looking to try something new. I'm sticking (see what I did there) with Vic Firth 5a until Mike Johnston's new signature stick gets finished, but this was fun. Oh and congrats on your signature stick! The two I don’t have that you have in the video are Chris Coleman and Tony Royster Jr’s second model. Thomas Lang model is coming soon to my doorstep. I have the same amount of signature sticks you have on the video. I am also a Vic Firth freak who loves to play Vic Firth sticks. Nice comparison. I for years played the Travis Barker signature stick, either the white or black, but got tired of playing cymbals and heads with white or black paint all over them, plus consistency was always a huge issue. I eventually went "back" to the Tommy Lee Studio Sticks by Ahead. I do still miss the tip of my TB sticks, but aware I can get new tips. My biggest beef with the ahead sticks, is that after changing sleeves, which is a helluva chore in the first place, the tips have come off on me twice. Now, that doesn't seem too severe, until you realize what that means. It means that twice once on my DW's and once on my Roland's, I have beat my drums with a piece of aluminum with harsh threading on it. At least on my DW's it happened on new heads day, and totally decimated the 1 hour old set of heads, along with cracking my 2002 20" medium crash "yeah, ouch" and the 2nd time I managed to get through the 1st 2 plys of my 3 layer Roland $100 snare head, and my PDX proprietary $45 each tom pad heads. Yes, a normal drummer in a live setting would've caught this much faster than half a song later, but I'm not a normal drummer. I was in buds both times, and I'm legally blind, so didn't notice right away. With that being said, in the 3 years I've played these, including the cost of the cymbals and heads, I'm still WAAAAAAY under my former wood stick budget over a comparable playing time avg. I've literally replaced 1 pair of sticks, and 3 sets of shaft covers in 3 years. That's literally about $40 a year for drum sticks, and since I just because bought a new set that I've exclusively played on my electronics, those still look mint condition! Absolutely not a single mark on either stick. Coming from 2 to 3 pairs of $13 TB's a month, to 1 set a year "sort of, but less really" I am still a stonch supporter of the Ahead sticks, even with the flaws and inadvertent gear damage. On an aside, between these 2 sticks, I play "Sam Ash Specials" a generic b grade stick that turned out just about the same quality, style and feel of the $10 more per pair Zildjians. In my experience anything that says Zildjian on it, that's not made of b20 alloy is total garbage!

The tip on the Lang sticks had a major chip after only about an hour or so. Not impressed. I tried the Gavin Harrison model...very long but surprisingly good rebound and control for a large stick. The Danny Carey model is so cool with the knurled out section for the fulcrum. A bit beefy, however. The Mike Johnston NE-1 is nothing special. Personally I like the Vic Firth Freestyle 55A. Trying out some signature Vater sticks at the moment. THE excel model at 15 3/4 inches is interesting. Getting around the kit is a bit easier than with the longer models over 16 inches. The Vater XD series is great. Both the 5B and Rock models. The Chico Hamilton and Abe Cunningham Cool Breeze models are not for me. Short tapers result in less rebound and a forward feeling heavy stick. Another great contender is the VF American Sound 5B. All the American sound models have that ball tip with to me results in fantastic rebound. These are all subjective opinions of course but I hope this sheds some light on a few different models.
