The story goes that Neil had just written this, the other cats hadn’t heard it yet…only 3 chords, so Neil turned on the tape deck in his barn studio, early in the morning, and they learned it together . The long opening guitar bit is their trying to find that swaying groove Neil was looking for. Part of why it sounds so fresh, real 🎸🎸🎤🥁👍

One of my favorite songs by Neil. The last time I saw him he had just started this song and then stopped - the crowd wasn't happy. He said, "It will be OK, don't worry", and they ripped into a 15-minute Cinnamon Girl. He was right, it was OK. My brother saw him a few days later and I asked him if they had done this at that show. He said no, they got Cortez but no Cinnamon Girl. For a couple of early Neil songs give a listen to The Loner and The Last Trip to Tulsa.

The direct/in the moment, emotional sincerity of this recording is rare AF, and gives this song resonance beyond its lyric's contents. For me personally, I used this track as my go-to slow dirge, to help me process my feelings about my father's death 5 years ago. Repeated listens in the months after that helped me just sit with those heavy feelings in the comfort of "musician friends I'd been listening to for decades." (Quoting FZ: Music is the best~~~)

In a way, I had a similar reaction to your reaction that you had to this song. It's one that I don't often play, maybe because of the long intro, but I haven't heard it in a long time but of course I used to play it all the time and I had forgotten how much I really actually love this song. And you know what? It made my allergies act up.

One thing I do know is that for a while I had a playlist that would have Cortez the Killer and then it would be followed by Powderfinger from his Rust Never Sleeps album a few years later. It's such an emotional heavy hitter and it is done so well. I mean it is done soooo well. And yeah, it was a hit. I really never thought about it until this moment, but I wonder if one reason I had them back-to-back, is because in a way they have similar themes but it's about two completely different encounters in two totally different contexts, but both were historical such as in this case. But I mean that song kicks fucking ass. It really does. They fucking rock it out even as they're being deep and poignant.

I'm 71 as well, and have seen bands that you young dudes can only dream about. I've seen Niel 4 times 2 just him, guitar, piano and harmonica. One of the times he had an elderly man setting up this guitars, placed a candelabra on his piano and chairs in position. My love for Niel grew when he introduced him as his dad. How cool was that. One acoustic show in Providence RI he played for over 3 hours. The other two were with Crazy Horse. Those concerts were so intense, the loudest band I've ever heard. My ears rand for hours after.. The audience was awesome, people passing joints and a few mushrooms. CRAZY HORSE lit the fuse for Niel and all hell broke loose on the stage. His live performances were beyond description. A wizard going OFF to a place were only he knew existed. I got to meet him once back stage with my younger brother. Neil loved seeing the 2 generations that he had made an impact. Neil Young with Crazy House was raw rock n roll.

68 and still listening. I bought this (and Red Octopus by Jefferson Starship) in a record shop in 1975 San Fransico. I was in the US Coast Guard aboard their largest sea-going cutter, USCGC Midgett assigned to PACOM (Pacific Fleet Command) and about to embark on an extended patrol from San Diego, California to Point Barrow, Alaska ...and quite literally all points in between. It turned into nearly a year at sea and to say we played the HELL out of this would have been an understatement.

A certain kind of man hears "Cortez the Killer" and just falls apart. There's something of the loss of romance that got captured on that recording. Btw, for guitar players? You hear all of those "wrong" notes as he's playing? That's him feeling it and not caring - and we need more of that in guitar players. They're right emotionally and that's all that counts.

Do yourself a favor and watch Neil's self directed concert film "Rust Never Sleeps". It catches Neil at the peak of his career, 1978, and has many of his best songs. You see him solo playing Acoustic Guitar, Harmonica and Piano, and then Electric Guitar with Crazy Horse. And the way Neil stomps around the stage is great, and just watch Billy Talbot do his thing, in a Lynyrd Skynyrd T-Shirt. Crazy, Crazy Horse.
