Here in the UK if you ask most men over the age of 65 who their favourite musicians are, Orbison will consistently be on their lists, just as much as The Beatles! He was a really big deal in his day.

Roy had such a unique talent. May I suggest a watch of " A Black and White Night". A special where Mr. Orbison played a variety of his songs with an all star backing band that included Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, kd lang, Jackson Browne, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello and more.

I was a huge fan of Roy's in the 50s and 60s. I finally saw him perform twice in the 80s and he exceeded my hopes...by far. Roy changed the landscape of pop and rock by laying open his heart for all to see and hear. No tough guy BS. Loved your reaction.

According to Roy Orbison, when he was first asked by Brian Epstein to tour England (1963) with the Beatles, he responded, “What’s a Beatle?” Orbison was fresh off hits like “Only the Lonely,” “Crying,” and “In Dreams,” and his popularity was rising fast in the U.K., but he wasn’t yet used to Mersey Beat bands with such goofy names. It was his first U.K. tour, and, as Orbison later recalled, he didn’t know what to expect. Orbison was the headliner but turned into Co-headliner due to Beatle's rise in fame. Orbison did 6 songs The Beatles did 7.

This song was in the movie Blue Velvet and it is always the first thing that pops in my head when I hear it. "Dream Baby", "Only The Lonely", "Crying" and "It's Over" are some of my other favorites of his. I also love the expansive vocal range of his great voice.

Gday Lee,my dad listened to Roy and so i grew up with this,i didn't realise what a great voice he had until i got into the music scene and heard singers talk about him in the 80s,and they were heavy rock singers.There's very few male singers who have the octave range of Roy.

Roy had a beautiful, powerful voice ... so many good songs by Roy. Most of his songs were sad and had a crescendo that showed off his power and range. I've requested the song "Dream", so I know we'll be hearing more from Roy.

In an era when almost everyone else was writing songs that were verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-verse-chorus (or something like that), Roy wrote songs like this, no verse or chorus, but one movement after another after another -- at least 5 or 6 distinct movements, never repeated, building toward the climax.

I know you did the song “Crying” as the duet with KD Lang. He let her sing the high parts on that one. If you listen to the original, you’ll hear his sing high notes with power. It’s almost his calling card. “It’s Over” is another one that captures that sound.

Other acts on the '63 UK theaters tour were Gary and the Pacemakers, Davis MacBeth, Louise Cordet, Tony Marsh, Terry Young Six, Erkey Grant, Ian Crawford. And except for Orbison and maybe the Pacemakers, if you're asking yourself who are all these other acts----exactly. The Beatles and Orbison had to take turns closing the first and second halves of the shows or otherwise the audience would just be waiting for Beatles and Orbison and the other acts didn't have a chance. It was a bit embarrassing said George. Paul wrote All My Loving on that tour and played it to Roy..

Bono (U2) said he used to lie in the dark and listen to this song over and over and over again. He said that when he prepared to record "Mystery Girl" with Roy, he thought on the first take that Roy was just listening to the song and wasn't singing because he barely had his mouth open. And then they listened to the recording, and there was that magnificent voice. Try singing this one in the shower. You'll start out sounding okay, same range as Roy. But then the second movement is higher and the third and ...
