Now the glasses....from what I heard, he was the headliner for an early sixties tour in the UK featuring the Beatles. They learnt alot about musicianship from him, but that's another story. Anyway, I think Roy forgot his prescription eyeglasses in the US, and only had his pair of prescription sunglasses on him. So he had to use these during the tour, and the "new look" was a hit. So he kept wearing them in all his future shows.😄

Roy Orbison...the greatest voice ...endorsed by The Beatles, Elvis, Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan..you are so right ..."this dude was something else" his voice was matched by his humanity. By all accounts he was a shy humble respectful man who suffered unimaginable tragedy in his life yet returned and built a new life with his love and kindness. Roy Orbison spoke for the broken-hearted and the lonely. Very sad he died at such a young age aged 52, but his music will be forever. Roy did say that his voice was a gift from God. To think he suffered from stage-fright

The Beattles were huge fans of Roy Orbison. George Harrison and Roy Orbison had been friends since the ealry 1960s When Roy toured with the Beattle from May 18, 1963 - June 9, 1963. At the beginning of the tour Roy headlined the Tour by the end of the tour The Beattles were headlining it. In 1988 Roy and George got together with their friends Jeff Lynne(ELO), Bob Dylan and Tom Petty (Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers) to form the Traveling Wilburys to make an album. It's fantastic unfortunately Roy died after he finished his lyric for the song End of The Line, but before the video could be made. When Roy's lyrics played they would show his guitar on a rocking chair and his picture.

I heard an interview with George Harrison when they were practicing before recording and Harrison didn't really know him. When practicing they could hardly hear him so it had Harrison concerned. When they went to record Orbison told Harrison to turn his mike as low as it would go. Harrison was skeptical but complied. When that sang Orbison practically destroyed it through the sheer power of his voice. He was one of those once in a lifetime performers.

This performance couldn’t have been too long before he died. He passed in December of ‘88. He was only… 58, I think. Not even old. But he still sounded like he did at 28. And it’s weird because with that voice, you figure he’s gotta put his whole body into it, but he wouldn’t move when he was singing, except to tap his foot or move his head a little, and play his guitar. It looked as if it were truly effortless for him. Just stand there and open his mouth and this angelic sound would just… come out… like you’d take a breath. Guy was an absolute legend. Elvis, Springsteen, KD Lang… he influenced generations of artists. Check out “Ooby Dooby,” “I Drove All Night,” and “You May Feel Me Crying.” And yeah, anything from Traveling Wilburys, Volume 1. But especially “Not Alone Anymore,” which Roy sang lead on.

Roy was one of the greats, if i remember right - in the mid 50s, Roy - Johnny Cash - Elvis - Jerry Lee Lewis - Buddy Holly - Ritchie Valens - The Big Bopper - Waylon - Willie and many others toured together, i think by '58 they were starting to go their different ways, being successful... I know Ritchie - Buddy and the Bopper were still touring together - cause of the crash they were in in Feb - '59 that took their lives... Waylon Jennings was supposed to be on that plane - but the Bopper was sick, so Waylon gave up his seat on the plane to the Bopper... Don Mclean wrote American Pie, a tribute to the guys and how the crash was received by the public in '59... but you already know this...

Roy Orbison was beloved in the industry as a person first and as a vocal and songwriting icon. He started at Sun Records with Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis and was in the Class of '55 with Elvis. He is a true original: there was never anyone like him before him, and there will never be anyone like him since. He had an unbelievable range and sounded even better if you can believe that, in person. "Not Alone Anymore" on the Traveling Wilbury's CD is a must listen. This was in a commercial recently. Most people stay pretty close to the Black And White Night Showtime special. He’s peak chart-wise was around 1960. In the mid-eighties, he had a career resurgence with a duet of Crying with k.d. lang, the aforementioned Black and White Night special, his participation in the Traveling Willburys, and the Jeff Lynne-produced final album. It was such a shame he died when he did because he’s career was on a definite upturn.
