While this is far and away the best break down of the Rosanna Shuffle, it might be the best break down of any beat that I’ve seen. Unlike the usual “sink or swim” videos, this one lays down a solid foundation of theory and technique on which to build. This layered approach with increasing tempos is matched only by the production of the video. The inset, beat tracking, tempo log, and (especially) the “unison, tap, hi-hat” section are all on point and USEFUL. You’ve earned a new subscriber who can’t wait to practice. Thank you.

Friend, this may be the BEST drum video I've ever seen anyone do. I FINALLY understand it, and I have to preface that by saying that I didn't completely "get it" with Jeff Porcaro himself trying to explain it to a much younger me back in the 80s.

As a classically trained percussionist/drummer who now plays current music, I can say this is the fastest way to understand complicated drum scores. You can spend days, months, years trying to learn a rhythm thru repetition(a waste of time) but if you use the theory you can get it down in a matter of hours. I was playing this rhythm in 30 minutes. Great video.

Best breakdown of the Rosanna beat Ive ever heard. Ive been playing some 30 years and made many attempts at this groove but never actually nailed it accurately. Probably because I never properly understood it, therefore never analysed it well enough and certainly never broke it down in such a simplistic way as you have done. Superb video, with crystal clear breakdown thats brought on that "lightbulb" moment. Thank you so much .... now wheres my kit? I need to go and nail this once and for all ... 🙂

Man I started trying to learn this about 6 months ago...watched about 20 different instructional vids on YT and they all eiher failed to present a practical approach to playing this or just had it wrong themselves. There were 2 that werent bad and almost got me playing it. But in this video by showing the progression of the beat building in bpm you make it very consumable and now I know that the only thing keeping me from playing it consistently is practice because my hands just aren't used to churning out moeler+ghost note triplets at 160 bpm without tensing up. You broke it down so anyone can see exactly where they are not getting it. Identifying the problem is so crucial in drumming as when you don't know what your doing wrong..you can't fix it. Thanks so much, I can now play this very well at 140 and am getting close to being able to do it at 160 consistently..for now gotta practice a little bit before I get it going at speed. Great vid!

Why do I like this lesson so much? You can hear all the kit elements clearly and the instruction when and how to play each in correct timing. In particular you can see the notation as well as the foot action. I’ve watched many presentations on this excellent groove and none of them cover all these points; even Jeff’s inspiring, original lesson doesn’t benefit from those latter points. If you don’t need them, fine, but for a comprehensive build up it’s well worth the minutes, or hours, it may take you to master it.
@bigwillie5717
@bigwillie5717 Жыл бұрын
But WHY is this the best breakdown of the Rosanna shuffle? Quite simply…because most instructors merely play each limb’s part separately then have the student mirror or repeat it then combine the parts. Instead, Brandon offers CONTEXT to each limb’s part…so we, the student, may fully grasp WHY and HOW each part is played and so we may arrive at the big AH-HA moment generally faster. Big difference from simply repeating something. This is very similar to learning a new language. Instead of replicating the auditory tones and sounds of a foreign language word with no comprehension of what you’re actually saying, you instead learn the meaning and context of each word in order know WHEN and WHY to use that particular word. Then the words makes sentences and as such, you comprehend a conversation. Same with Brandon’s lesson here. The triplet/hand see-saw/hi-hat shuffle lesson alone is brilliant…and practical. Brandon’s approach to this has allowed me and I’m sure other drummers a faster means to grasp this iconic shuffle. Well done!!! *Fun exercises: import the Rosanna shuffle into other popular straight 4/4 cover songs. Also, once you can play the Rosanna shuffle, you’re not far off from the Bonham shuffle. Adjust some accents and learn Bonham’s groove from “Fool in the Rain.” (Latin drums and whistle optional.)

Hi PIPI... thank you so much for that awesome compliment. It means so much! Please omit out that second half of your comment from your mind. By saying that your body won't allow you, you just disabled half of your ability to play that groove. I believe a lot in mind over matter. The mind is a powerful thing. If you keep telling yourself that you cannot achieve something, you would be limited your ability by half. I sincerely hope that by following these steps that you would be able to play the groove in no time. Keep me updated! =-)

So I’ve taken a lot of notice of the current drummers and techniques and especially Jeff Pocaro, RIP . But try as I might I’ve really struggled with the Rosanna Shuffle getting my head around it. Then I come across this video by Brandon Khoo and finally I found an instruction video that really does break everything down into understandable and workable sections. Wow. Thank you for this compliment Miklmikl. I have to say every experience as a player and an educator led to this ability. I realised that teaching in itself is an art and I have to credit my experience with Drumeo for this. Jared and Dave from Drumeo gave me a huge insight into the methods of education as a whole. Please do check out their videos on their KZbin channel. Once again, Thank you so much for this.It really made the experience of making this video worth it.

This is by far the best breakdown of this groove I’ve come across. I made an oaoth last year when we got locked down, to learn the Purdie shuffle, Bonham Shuffle, and the Rosanna shuffle. I accomplished two out of the three. Was starting to make some lead way with this one but nothing, and I mean no other video has compared to this one!!! Can’t wait to get on the kit and try this one again!!! 2021 will be the year I conquer this!!!

Incredibly insightful breakdown. This is the recipie. I’ve wanted a true breakdown of this best for years. The Hi-Hat and ghost notes on the snare is the key. Thank you! You got a new subscriber.

Deconstruction is the key. I’m a piano player but I thoroughly enjoy your process in conveying information. Kudos, BK.

Excellent breakdown of the groove. I know for many drummers syncopation, ghost notes, and really anything outside of a 4/4 beat is intimidating. Often times some of the grooves or fills that sound complicated are really not that bad once you break them down into their parts. If you can't just listen to a song and learn it instantly, then take your time and break it down. Learn the pieces. Learn it at a slower tempo. Once you get a few basics down then keep turning up the tempo. When your playing you ultimately don't want to be doing too much thinking. You want to feel the song and you should be comfortable behind your kit. If a song is a chore then you have to evaluate why. Rock on!

Very interesting in that I had to finally resort to reading sheet music to get this and learn Morello's Take 5 groove after 30 yrs of playing drums by ear! I am right handed and "play"drum open handed style. So I use my left hand on the high-hat shuffle triplets for Rosanna and then when I get tired, I go to my right hand on the ride to play Take 5. At 68 yrs old, it keeps me young and gives my brain a work out. You ain;'t kidding about the need to practice. Also started rudiments (paradiddle) on the drumeo practice pad I won from Drumeo!
