Bass drum sounds awful in the mix.

That's his sound. He keeps his kick wide open, no port hole on reso head, tuned higher than most would tune. Whatever artist he plays with, he always retains that sound, but more controlled. In a studio or live environment, he will use a more traditional approach to his kick sound, just to cater to who he's playing with. You can find live footage of him playing with Sting, Steely Dan, and many others, where he's got a normal sounding kick..
