When I was a little girl I used to live in Mexico. My grandma used to have a lady that helped her with the household chores and she would take me with her to do laundry ... at a nearby RIVER! i would watch her do laundry and scrub the clothes on a huge rock and rinse them in the river... I'm happy we have washers and driers now 😂 👕👖🧦🏞🌊

@@anushreesharma6167 Yes, every time I go back to visit some of my family still washes clothes by hand and dry their clothes on top of their roof. It really reminds me of my childhood. So when I hear my little sister complain about doing her laundry, I just tell her to be thankful she doesn't have to go the river and wash it there lol

You can streamline your hand washing just a little bit more by using a wool wash that doesn't need to be rinsed. I'm a hand knitter and many/most of us use something like Eucalan or Soak for our fine hand knits. Plus they come in lovely fragrances or fragrance-free. In a pinch, it is also okay to use a mild dish detergent (I will most often use this with my handknit socks) like Ivory for wool, cashmere, and silk ... though this DOES need to be rinsed thoroughly. We hand knitters are masters of hand washing :)

I work in the fashion industry as a product developer. 60% of the time, the reason something is dry-clean only is trims. Either the trim finish gets damaged quickly in water wash, or the trim damages the fabric or other trims in wash - even by hand. Other than that, it is usually fabric delicacy and dye running. There are LOTS of things that are dry clean only that can be handwashed - and I handwash most of mine at home. Sometimes, though, it is internal construction and in those cases you will likely damage the make and drape of your garment if you hand wash it. If you have a structured dress or jacket, just take it to the dry cleaners.

I have found that adding about a cup of white vinegar to every load of towels, then drying them in the sun when possible, helps to keep towels smelling fresh.😁

Unless you are washing them right away hang them to dry after use. Then when you do wash them put vinegar in as a fabric softener and got water, this should kill the bacteria causing the smell. Then you can just put them in the dryerput them in the dryer to dry. This is what I have done and I have never had any musty smell once cleaned
@juliestam5 жыл бұрын
Musty smell could also be from your washing machine. Air it by leaving the door/lid open all year round. Vinegar instead of fabric softener will get rid of the smell. A few drops of lavender oil in the vinegar will also kill bacteria that cause the smell

My sad story is that I am way too adventurous and used to throw a silk blouse that I had in the dryer. This makes the silk way more delicate...I do not recommend drying silk in the dryer...Now I'm following the laying flat method that you recommend! In fact, (dh nor I) can sleep under it & have to fold it down to the end of the bed bc we have such terrible neuropathy that it's downright painful to lay under. It would cost upwards of $75 to have it professionally cleaned. I've sprayed it w/Febreze, & I have left it in the sun for a few hours or so but it has been such a wet year this past year & running back & forth w/my mil, who has been in such bad health this past year, I'm just exhausted, hurting (stress fractures returned along w/new issue w/achilisitis & possible bursa tear. Am waiting on appt w/specialist to learn just how bad it is. spent last year in & out of casts & don't relish the thoughts of that again. It's alls courtesy of multiple autoimmune diseases). Thank you for the tips. I've sort of been binge watching/listening & making notes as well as putting a lot of what I've learned, albeit many I already knew but I have learned a great deal, to work.

At my son's wedding the new bride spilt lemon mousse on the deep red dress, dry clean only, so I hand washed this full length raw silk and taffeta heavily embroidered and embellished dress, the only problem was that to dry it I needed to hang it over the shower rail but I fell and broke my heel bone.

I am very disappointed in the direction that you took your video. Although you make some good points, you have neglected the damage that may and will come to garments by people trying out your suggestions. There are many reasons for care labels stating, "dry clean only", which have to do with the textile, colour, and history of the material. Unfortunately, there are many care labels sewn on that are completely mislabell ed and by well known manufacturers. This is a situation that we at the Canadian Fabricare Association and its' membership are trying to remedy in partnership with the Dry Cleaners & Launderers Institute in the U.S.A. and CINET, the association of textile care professionals in over 100 countries. You fail to recognise that the make up of our population is different in that many working women, who usually do the laundry at home are now working and do not have the time for taking care of these special items. They have come to depend on their local professional dry cleaner to assess the care of each garment that they take to the cleaners. Many stains on garments may require more than one method to remove them and if the person doing it is not cognisant of the damage that may occur when the wrong applications are applied, the garment will be damaged. Customers should be looking for Environmentally Certified dry cleaners who are members of a professional dry cleaning association. Only then, can they be assured that the operator of the dry cleaning plant has access to the latest information about old and new textiles in the marketplace. These professional dry cleaners have spent years learning and improving their skills with the object of returning garments to their customers in an as new condition as when bought. I feel that you may cause more harm by recommending certain products, because we have found that many do not do what they are advertised to do. This has been proven out in the past with many products that have been retracted from the marketplace. Most of the detergents and solvents that are used in a dry or wet cleaning plant have undergone much testing both in the manufacturers laboratories, as well as the testing labs of the DLI and CINET, before they are certified as safe to use in the dry cleaning operation.
