Born in US, but I spoke only Greek until I went to school. Also went to Greek school so I am proficient in Greek. When I went to college the requirement was having a second language. I went to the Dean and explained, in perfect English, that I had a second language: English. That surprised him but he recovered and said then I needed to take a proficiency test in my first language, Greek, to meet the second language requirement. So I did. Easiest exam I ever took.

My parents were refugees from Laos 🇱🇦 & actually had an arranged marriage here in FL. Then they had me so I became the 1st generation to be born & raised in sunny central FL. My mom was from a family of 5 kids & my dad from a family of 14 kids. So the big family stereotype about Lao people are true lol. Can't wait to hear more of your jokes they're very wholesome.

@@Adscam the country is pronounced Lao. The "s" at the end is silent. Some Lao people and non Lao people will use the politically correct term (which was created by America), "Laotian". But "Lao" is the accurate word to describe someone who is from Laos or of Lao ethnicity.

When we did, our daughter was put into ESL. I had to go to the school a few times to explain why she should not be in ESL. She was seven and writing in perfect cursive as well. The teacher told her to go back to writing in print, because the other kids couldn't understand what she was writing. :( Love seeing comedians like this who share their stories.

Black. African. Came to the US when I was 20. Grew up speaking English. And had the same exact situation when I tried to sign up for college. This entire conversation (paraphrased) *was in English.* Her: so you're going to have to take a ESL. Me (my stepdad was a university professor here, so I knew what ESL was): uh, no I don't. Her: When you come from a foreign country you have to take ESL, it's a requirement so that people who don't natively speak English can learn the language and improve their understanding of all the other subjects. Me: First of all, English is not my second language, it's my fifth, and I probably speak it better than you do. Second. Do you see the high school certificate in front of you. There is an A there for English. Do you see that there is also an A for English Literature. In fact, for all nine subjects on that certificate, in which I passed all of them, I was tested in English. Additionally, I have Pitman's certificates including one for Business English. I will not be taking English as a Second Language when i've only ever had As in English since 3rd grade. (2nd grade my brother and I (twins) were not proficient in English. We only did 2nd grade for one term and were promoted to 3rd grade the next term, and were were caught up on English by the end of the year.) Her: Um, uh ... ok. You're going to have to take a test. I literally finished that English proficiency test in 5 minutes

You know that notepad they have near the art supplies, so you can test out colored pencils before you buy them, and there's always somebody who has to test every single one? At the end of the day, the head of the art supply department in Hobby Lobby tears that piece of paper off the pad and sends it to the local meteorologists, who recycle it as a means of weather prediction. My language was still poor sonI never understood how was it that he broke her heart, 😅LOL) 1 girl from Lebanon i think, Aisha, gave me a little 🧸 teddy that i kept to this day (somewhere in a box in the basement) 1 boy from Kuwait (tall and blond, the weirdest thing) 1 of me, from a country that shall not be named.

Second cousin to this: As an employee of a large state school, I used to take various foreign language classes in their Evening College. In every single one, the majority of the students were people who already spoke that language at home. They were taking the class for the easiest possible credit. Given that these were always immersion classes, all they had to do was go to class and speak the language they would have been speaking at home anyway. The German class was full of German speakers. The Spanish class was full of Spanish speakers. The Japanese class was full of Japanese speakers. And on and on and on.

Bob, being short for Robert, comes from the Anglo-Saxon Hrodebeort, meaning “Fame-Bright.” So Bob derives from the Anglo-Saxon word for “bright.”

Omg, they did thay too me too! I was being taught how to speak the language i DIDNT know. An when i cried, i remember the teacher being frustrated with me, grabbed a caramel candy (the one with that cartoon bear on it; i remember becuase i loved this candies when i was little) and, instead giving me the candy, she ate it and gave me the wrapper to wipe my tears instead. I was SO confused of why i had to be there, lol!!

My twin sister really didn’t apply in herself in high school taking easy classes and avoiding advanced placement me mostly college prep classes for the easy grade and she was a big pot smoker whereas I dedicated myself to getting good grades and taking the most difficult classes ( although I quit math after I failed advanced algebra)🎉 …so when she went to take the college placement exam in junior college (probably stoned) they placed her in English as a second language which disqualified her from taking any class in which English proficiency was required. Whereas I passed the ap test and received a passing score and wasn’t required to take any English to receive an as or ba - so I pretended to be her, sat for a rex and purposefully wrote down a bit thinking they would not believe it was her of I did my best and got her a new score of college prep and then she was allowed to enroll in college prep classes. English was her first and primary language. She studied two years of Spanish on HS/ Roxy isn’t it!!

If you dont pronounce the accent right in his name it could be broken down as Phom=Hair, Ma=Dog, and Chanh=Monday.....So translated to "Case of the Monday" Bahahaha Office Space. I love it.. I crack me up. Gonna like my own comment cuz no one ever likes my comments. Lakhon der!

that brings up my memory. I was in Main, Sugarloaft mountain and went to little burger joint to get some burgers for my family. And there was a guy standing in front of the counter looking at me and I was the only Asian of course. Anyway, I asked him, hey can I have five burgers and five fries? he said yes sir.. And I got close to him and realized he was the cop eating his burger standing there. He and I laughed so hard that we both cried. lol
