You made me chuckle, so well stated. I thought of several things that drive me crazy- then realized they all have a common denominator: EGO. 1) Paying for advice without paying attention. You can learn something from everyone, even if it's what not to do. Be respectful. If you don't agree with an opinion, take it home quietly and chew on it. It may reveal things about yourself that need changed. 2) Allowing horses to run all over you. So dangerous for everyone, including those who work on them for a living, as well as the horse itself. 3) Abuse stemming from anger- when egos are bruised because things go wrong. This seems to be a universal problem with kids, animals, spouses, etc. I could go on and on.... Thank you, Dewayne, for helping me take a hard look at myself and work at becoming a better human.

Sometimes yes. Sometimes no. Sometimes the end result is only a small part of the lesson. Sometimes the journey is the lesson. If you take a different route or shortcut, you might be missing a crucial part of the foundation of the end result. But I get what you're saying. When I teach someone, I always ask them to learn it MY way 1st. Then they can change it, if they see a better way, afterward. 😊😊😊

I hate to see someone whip or yank their horse around, or even verbally berate them when they do something wrong. 99% of the time it isn't even that the horse did the wrong thing, the rider was sending mixed signals, the horse just listened to the "wrong" signal.

Well put . There is left and right , right and wrong . Lots of gray between the last two , but inherently we know the difference . If we would just temper our minute differences between what we believe , and how others may do things ; we could ALL learn things we may have never been exposed to previously . We don't have to believe something different , Just accept the difference , explore the possibilities ( as long as it is legal and moral ) to see IF it might work for us too . And if not , move on with what brought us this far . Glad you are back to adjusting the space between the ears of us human "mules" .

I've always wanted to make a "bridle horse" like Pat. But my skills, timing and feel will never get to a level where I will accomplish that. I just don't have the opportunities to ride and train. But there are things about that style of riding that I CAN use. Where I came from was "the old days". We'd get a horse broke enough to get a job done and then go get that job done. We didn't have good horses but we had good stories. At 58 years old, I've learned that there are pieces of almost every famous trainer that might work for me...or it might not. Wisdom can be found in many places. Keep riding and don't lose your bells!

I have honestly learned horses aren’t always having a good day just like humans. But horses can’t talk so if we don’t take time and learn the horse. We are different just like horses are different. My point is patience is the most important thing and learning to be gentle. Some people are very big about controlling the horse and they don’t learn to respect the horse that can think for itself.

I really like your videos. I too watch Mr Pat Pucketts videos. Peaves. 1. There are so many trainers that are scoundrels and worse even thieves. I really want to send my horse to a trainer for more education, but I've heard so many horror stories. 2. Not using a rear cinch at all. I know it's always needed, But once you put one on a new horse and they break in half, every horse will have one. Every horse I ride gets a rear cinch. 3. Allowing horses in your space. Thats the first thing I notice when someone is messing with a horse.

I have professionally been in the hunter/jumper world for over 35 years. The constant doping of these horses makes me sick. These horses are regularly doped 12 hours out of competition. If you sit out at the barns at the shows, you will see trainers showing up at 2am, needles in hand. It is wrong. What is also wrong is that the powers that be, USEF & FEI, make meds, that would be actually helpful to the horse, illegal. The horses should be able to have certain anti inflammatory drugs on board, just as we humans do. The horses have hard jobs. With that being said, it is wrong to drug these horses with meds that they do not need, just to produce a calm result. Drives me insane. It is wrong. It's horrible that this happens on a regular basis in our sport. Those of you who show on the circuit know that this is true. Not all do it, but many do.

To answer the first two questions. Something I can’t stand in the horse world are English riders who care to be influencers more than horsemen and women. Reason being, they care more about showing themselves around the horse more than caring about the horse themselves. They couldn’t care less about the spirit, the love and the history Drives me crazy for the simple fact of how shallow it is. Working with horses shouldn’t be for your own ego. Onto the rest of the video. Potentially a hot take but I stand by it.

I think this is interesting. Remember when we where kids. If we had someone to ride with we where happy. As we got more set in our ways we wanted people we ride with to have our beliefs and ideals. Same with spirituality and people we visit with. My dislikes is when people don't look after their tack . Plop it down in a heap. Never clean or repair. Grubby girths and sores on the horses from that. Also people who never want to learn a better way even when their way is not working , refusal to change for any reason . I ride English but started out western . I liked to jump and it's not so great in western gear. Now I arena ride mostly and like dressage. I also don't like clinicians who are arrogant and make you think your putting them out to teach you. I use to pay for clinics to give my young horse exposure. I said to one clinician can you give me a tip on my position. She said with a scowl oh that... no and turned her back.. when I show I get a 7 out of 10 on my score for position so I felt gross low and sad that she thought I was such a crappy rider. So now I don't go pay for someone to make me feel bad. I just stay away.

Oh Dewayne, so many answers - so little time. (People) thinking that you can out-muscle a horse by pulling and tugging on the lead rope as if the horse is some giant weather balloon getting away in the wind. It makes me ‘crazy’ because its just plain senseless, it induces anxiety in a prey animal that is at your mercy, and all you have to do is acknowledge what it is you don’t know (i.e., handling a horse) and ask for help that invariably is around you. I believe we have a responsibility to our horse(s) under our care. In the wild, it’s up to nature. In human settings, it’s up to the human. I count as my horse Rabbis yourself, Dewayne, but also Pat Puckett, Warwick Schiller, Amru Alabidi (Elite Horsemanship), amongst others. I mustn’t forget my local trainers to whom I owe much. Different techniques - same philosophy: honor your partner and your obligation to your partner.

From one of your not horse followers. Not because I don't like horses but because I have not had any true exposure to them. In fact I would say they are my second favorite animal after dogs. Horses are such beautiful creatures, if I am out driving and see them and I am in a spot to pull over and view them I do. But your point of this video does hold true for so much in today's society. A lot of times when talking with people and we are not agreeing on something, instead of continuing debating the matter I simply say "I am not saying your wrong it's just not my way or belief". If they continue then it is time to leave. Bought your Dry Creek lighter, love it... really cool. Showed it to a couple friends who didn't even know your KZbin existed then a week or two later, they will say "hey I watch such and such video and they just loved your common sense no b.s. way or talking. Anyways, keep up the great content. And maybe someday I can speak horses to you.

i think fractures are ok to have because they generate new ideas and methods to do things, but the biggest problem is the closed mindedness and ego that people have with their ideas and methods. i take in every piece of information i can find and test it, if it doesnt work for me it doesnt work. hell sometimes i cant do it right and i accidentally find a new method. we all need to learn to drop the ego and learn, it goes for everything, horses, politics, children. critical thinking is a rare thing these days.

I watch a lot of videos across the internet, of people doing a plethora of different things in different ways. Coinciding to their culture, atmosphere, etc. and even though I live in south Louisiana and gonna move to western Washington state soon, I still marvel at the fact of how I can watch others in Arizona, Australia, Texas, Maine, Colorado, Switzerland, Germany, etc; doing the same task or idea differently. I work maintenance on a golf course and the same thing, watching how they lay fertilizer or straighten out sand bunkers, or whatever in a completely different terrain and atmosphere and all the intricacies of those duties entailed; I don’t get upset over how people do things differently. And that also formed for religions, foods, etc; we should admire how people can do the same duty or task in multiple ways. Instead of fighting. More cooperation and love making and less fighting and stubbornness. And that’s especially true of relationships.

I’m in Tennessee and I have 3 beautiful horses that are very expensive yard ornaments 😅. I wanted to add, don’t get roped in to only following 1 trainer, as Wade said, because there is so many different ways and if you get narrow minded into only one way, you miss out on so many wonderful ways of training and building a bond with your horses. I got sucked in by a trainer, spent way too much money and slowed my progress down. It took too long but I’m glad I left and learned never to get sucked in to only one way. I love cherry picking, I take what works and politely declined the rest.

I like watching pat myself. His methods are sometimes different but I learn from him to put in my toolbox for when I need it. Same with some other trainers, but that said some are just gimmicks. As far as pet peeves go it's the person who does think they know it all and going to look down because your way is different. I'm not wring because it's not someone else's way. I would be wrong if it's not safe or dangerous for the animals well being.

I have always wanted to learn about horses and how to ride one. I have gone on local trail rides and it was fun but it's not the same. I took up riding English style riding just because I couldn't find any horse people in my area that was willing to show me the ropes and teach me. I pay fir for my weekly lessons and I have enjoyed it so much. I am learning alot about the animal and how to take care of them. It blows my mind that the horses are so intuitive and smart. I have been humbled alot by them and I realize how NOT smart I am 😂. I forget to breathe alot while I am riding and I don't even know it until my trainer tells me to breathe and then it comes to me quickly. I don't notice it but my horse does. Taking riding lessons and being around the horses has helped me mentally, physically and emotionally. I have PTSD from the way my son passed in 2008 and a traumatic childhood and I have chronic depression. My back is also fused from C2 to my Pelvis with titanium rods, screws and brackets. Learning, riding and being around horses has been the best therapy for me to date. It's a complete package because I get mental and physical therapy all while being outdoors.

I train and handle dogs for a living. My handling style (although i did not realise this until recently) has always been the opposite of Heavy-Handed. Its very useful in dog training to incorporate the mindset of people who train and handle big heavy four legged animals. Watching some other dog handlers or dog trainers use excessive heavy handedness and frequent unneccessary signals (over-stimulation of a dog) always annoys me.

Only half way in but I like what I hear. I try not to, but in this environment, I think of how this applies to political and social issues. And how often we respond harshly to things we honestly just fear. I think so often, people are afraid. And we should acknowledge that and realize it’s why we make decisions.

1) lack of conditioned response. 2) the horse knows exactly how to do whatever, but just needs positive reward to choose what is being asked.

When a rider snatches the bit in a horse's mouth(abuse) and the flank cinch is hanging loose(dangerous). I don't like correction bits and severe bits like spades . I don't like tie-downs on a horse's head. I don't like trainers that ride 2 year olds hard and way too soon ! Quarter horse showing has damaged the breed .

About 80 percent of people I came in contact with that are real into horses and in the horse world seem to be very arrogant. The other 19 percent were the nicest people in the world - was 0 in between. I worked on RVs in rural TN so I ended up working on a lot of horse trailers with living quarters- I’d sat in ten years I worked on 120 different horseman’s rv.. this is my take away - Dwayne would fall into a category all in his own as for me. The 1 percent - he’s neither arrogant nor one of the nice, easy folks to deal with. Obviously I don’t like dealing with the 80 percent - but I learned what not to be around them. The 19 percent I learned less from because I understood them more - but this one percent category is a totally different thing that younger folks can’t grasp and this is the one you just shut up and listen for. He’s the 1 percent that whole heartedly observed his entire life and was able to grasp what in his opinion is the best way to be. You can get bad and good advice from anyone but I hold the 1 percent to the ones you take advice and apply in all circumstances

I never really understood English saddles until I rode a few good gaited/ racking horses, you can really feel the horses gait a lot better and you can feel what you need to do, but I don’t think it would be fun riding QHs in them lol
