@@DaruDhillon do you have any recommendations for a ceiling that has one area where the paint has peeled off? I kept a guest room closed most of last summer, and I have one small area where the paint peeled, and chipped off. I *really* don’t want to have to do the whole ceiling over, so I was hoping you could give me some advice? Thanks!

Fantastic video, me being a long time drywaller my self. your method is correct and that patch should last for many years. The only thing I will add is this tip I learned years ago. after your final coat of mud it dried, I use a flashlight or a droplight angled while you do the final sand, the light enhances any imperfections on the surface. The light will show you exactly what needs to be sanded for a perfectly sooth surface everytime

I just want to say that I LOVE that you’re a feminine woman who not only does her own repairs, but also actually knows what she’s doing! It is very encouraging. I do so much of my own repairs, from car repairs to electronic and home repairs. Anytime a guy hears I’m going to repair something it’s always the same panicked reaction that I’m going to mess it up. Why? Because I’m a female? I know more about home and car repairs than every man I’ve ever dated and its solely because I choose to seek out the knowledge to perform each task. Thanks to people like you, there is very little one cannot learn to diy via Google and KZbin.

I'm a plasterer now working as a site patcher and I rarely use tape in a patch as you can only sand as far back as the tape, Easifill forced between the old and the new bonds the two together, then two tight coats of joint cement

Don’t recommend sanding between coats, just use trowel to knock off peaks. If you do choose to sand then after brushing dust off, use a damp sponge to remove dust or next coat adhesion will be compromised. To get a good paint finish you also need to build up some roller texture over repair area to match surrounding paint roller texture.

Awesome, *highly* detailed video. I haven't used this technique before because I've only ever Spackled small, dime-sized holes before. When I did those, I'd sand the Spackle down to where I'd be causing slight paint abrasion then I'd touch up the paint to cover. I noticed that if I left more Spackle than that on the wall, it never looked right (it would look like a mound of Spackled on the wall). With the technique in the video, if I sanded down to where paint abrasion started, wouldn't that also be damaging the drywall tape? Does the larger surface area of the patch job allow for more dispersion of the drywall compound, to where it wouldn't look like a mound of compound on the ceiling. Hopefully this long question makes sense? Thanks!

Can you add all the diy products you used, including the screws and how to make the mud or is the mud bought prepared in a tub.
@DaruDhillon
@DaruDhillon Жыл бұрын
Hi Junaid, good suggestions thanks. I'll have the link in description. For the screws I used 1 5/8" course thread but you can also use 1 1/4" for 1/2" drywall. All tools are in the description. I use the multi-purpose tub mud for patching with a little water and mixing to smooth it out. Good luck with your project! Thanks for commenting :)

Hi, Thank you for this video! It's the best one I have found. I have a 2 inch hole in my ceiling. I tried to used putty and a patch but gravity took over and it was a big Fail. I assume it was because I didn't secure it with the wood. I don't have a drill so I'll have to buy one. Should I just go to lowes for the wood and drill? What is that tape called please? I will show lowes this video. I am very handy once I know what I'm doing.

Good on you for learning how to do this! We learn the most from our mistakes, I did too. You can borrow a drill or buy one including lumber. The tape and tools used are linked in the description. The more you patch the better you get. Thanks Melanie

If you size your fix right and the joints are very small you can get away without using the tape. Also, when putting in screws make small pilot holes first, will help you get the screws in easier and ensure they go in straight. Otherwise, decent fix 👍🏻
@DaruDhillon
@DaruDhillon 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you've done a lot of drywall Bernie. Blowout patches are great if you have a lot of experience but I find they are more likely to fail if you are new to drywall. You have to get your mud just right and that takes experience. I like the tape method because it's crack resistant, strong and reliable. I don't want anyone to have to redo their work. Thanks for taking sharing your thoughts and tips!

Hi Daru, may I ask what is the size of furring strip you use?
@DaruDhillon
@DaruDhillon 2 жыл бұрын
For a small patch I'd use 1 1/2". I usually use a scrap piece of wood that I have on hand. As long as it fits in your patch and you can get at least two screws it in and room to secure your drywall to it. Thanks for the question. Good luck with your patching!

After priming, do you only repaint the area around the fix or the entire ceiling in that room? Thanks!
@DaruDhillon
@DaruDhillon 3 жыл бұрын
I use a good quality primer on the patch and feather it out. Then I paint the patch only and lightly feather the paint with a roller into the existing paint. It should blend well if you have the same ceiling paint to cover the patch. I spot prime and paint often without issue. If your ceiling was painted a long time ago it may show faintly. Thanks for the question Ryan! Hope your repair goes well, it’s a good skill to know. 👍🏽

Soooo…we’ve had a hole in the ceiling of our study for probably about 10 years due to a leak in our master bathroom shower. My hubby works long hours during the week, he’s worn out on the weekends (but not gonna lie, he could have found the time to repair it in 10 years!). We have popcorn ceilings in the room that I’m going to remove when I repair that hole as a surprise for him. What order should I make those repairs in? Should I remove the popcorn, repair the hole, then paint the ceiling? Is there a better order to do the repair? I’m 60, retired, and think I can do everything! Is this going to kick my rear end? I’m actually pretty competent…
@R01202
@R01202 3 жыл бұрын
I would probably scrape the popcorn off first. You may find other issues underneath that can be fixed when patching. Assuming water leak is fixed?

Thanks very much for this informative video...I landed up here while searching "how to shorten the ceiling hole" as I found the current recessed LED ceiling lights that I want to replace are longer in diameter than the new ones that I would like to buy... But there are around 20 holes I need to shorten...so it is a bit of work I think.

Hi Sri, it would take a little time but it’s a manageable project. Learn how to patch and you’ll be able to do a patching job fairly quickly. Give it a try! 👍🏽 It’s a great skill to learn, will save you money and elevate the look of your ceiling. Sounds like you are updating your lights by going smaller. That’s a good update. I like to do the same.

I used the tape so people watching at home could see where the original patch was located. You don’t need tape. That way you can see where I was focusing on sanding and applying the mud. 👍🏽
