Hi everyone! In today's lengthy episode we will be taking apart the cylinder head and timing side of the 2g 7 bolt 4g63t engine to replace leaking valve seals. The smoke coming from the exhaust comes to an end by the time we finished shooting this episode. Hope this helps you with your project!! Check the link below for the tools you saw in the video! Also make sure that you buy yourself a couple m8x1.25x50mm bolts because you're going to need them!. Thanks for the support and we will see you next time!..
here is a link to the valve compressor tool that came with new valve seals included : www.ebay.com/itm/Mitsubishi-V...

This has to have been one of the most important videos I've watched in the 20 years of dsm(95 GSX) ownership. I had to recently do the valve stem seals on my car as they'd never been done during my ownership, and they were causing my car to fail smog(Cali rules are strict). Took several hours over 3 days but with this video(transcribed and pictures I drew), I got it done. While some things were shortened/omitted, it was enough to figure out, along with the haynes manual to get this thing done. Good recommendation on tools needed and how best to approach it. My car is running great and passed smog with flying colors and then some.... Many thanks!

I'm not 100% sure but I want to say yes. You can also remove them by placing a 15mm socket over the spring top with a short extension and smacking it with a hammer. Or use a c clamp and one of these brass t fittings to compress and reinstall the keepers for only a few bucks at a hardware store. www.amazon.com/dp/B082XT62NV/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_zYJdGb6RGX5EN

How did you remove the old stem seals? I’m using the tool but they don’t seem to want to budge.
@TPGDSM
@TPGDSM 2 жыл бұрын
I grabbed them CAREFULLY with long needle nose pliers, be careful to not scratch the valve stem and watch out for the groove where the seal seats. It likes to hold on to a small ring of old rubber which can hinder the sealing potential of the new ones.

@TPGDSM
@TPGDSM 4 жыл бұрын
@@laurencemathewriggs8023 a bad cam sensor could definitely make some funny things happen. You could try swapping the #4 and #3 plug wire and see if the misfire moves a cylinder as a quick test. I know each wire is shorter than the other but I'm almost certain #3 wire will reach from #4 coil to #4 spark plug.

25:45 why skip the install of the seal? That's literally the only thing giving me trouble at the moment. Is it supposed to sit flat against the cylinder head? I didn't get an audible click or pop and it seems to not be fully seated.
@TPGDSM
@TPGDSM 3 жыл бұрын
If the stem top is clean and free of old seal debris and rubber you can simply slide it in to place by placing a 8 or 10mm socket over the top of it, adding a short extension and tapping it into place. You'll feel it move and then stop. After you should check that all of the seals are the same distance up on the valve guide and you shouldn't be able to pull them off with your fingers. They kind of tap tap tap THUD once they're seated all the way down. I used a 10mm or similar size on a 1/4in drive extension and could hold on to the extension and feel it slide in to place while lightly tapping it with a small hammer until it stopped moving downward on to the guide. Hope this helps

@@TPGDSM did you have to bleed your lifters are soaking them in oil, or did you just reinstall them? I was under the assumption that bleeding the lifters were only necessary when installing a new camshaft?? Thanks for your input as I am currently tackling this job on my DSM.
@TPGDSM
@TPGDSM 2 жыл бұрын
@@chadjohnson6229 I know that when you purchase new lifters you need to use a paperclip straightened out to poke the internal bleeder and let the lifter collapse before installing. Mine were not new, I just pulled them and placed them straight into oil to sit, cleaned their bores after completing the rest of the job, and reinstalled them from a cup of oil. They may chatter for the first few minutes until they get refilled with oil pressure. Then it goes away and your home free. Take your time and be patient removing keepers. How you know if you had a bad valve seal?
@TPGDSM
@TPGDSM 3 жыл бұрын
Textbook signs are burning oil/dark/blue smoke coming from the exhaust. Usually happens AFTER you let off the gas pedal while the engine is under vacuum. That's when oil gets pulled through the exhaust valve seals and into the cylinder where it burns off.

Probably a dumb question but what is the white rope for?
@TPGDSM
@TPGDSM 3 жыл бұрын
It goes down in to the cylinder in a coil, then you manually turn the crank pulley to top dead center (or whichever cylinder your working on) and the rope pushes up on the valves so when you remove the keepers and springs the valve doesn't drop into the cylinder which would leave you removing the head to retrieve it. Same thing can be done with compressed air

How do you diagnose that it is the valve seal and not the valve guide?
@TPGDSM
@TPGDSM 3 жыл бұрын
I just checked underneath a seal, once I was in there it was clear the top of the seal was burnt black and while the engine idles it pulls vacuum. Usually that's when the oil sucks in past the seals. Then you hit the gas and it all smokes out the tail pipe. If your guides are worn you'll see lots of side to side play when the valve is installed, ovaling of the hole. And you can also check clearence from one valve to the other. In my experience guides dont go bad unless it's really high mileage OR timing belt snapped and pistons hit valves and bent the valve into the guide. Sorry for the late response. Message me on Instagram or Facebook messenger at TODAY'S PROJECT GUIDE if you need anything else id be glad to try to help
@schafer240
@schafer240 Жыл бұрын
To add to your response. A trick I learned from a old mechanic, when I was a mechanic is Off gas oil smoke = valve seals On gas oil smoke = piston rings Then with a turbo the oil smoke will be more white and will be apparent at idle and really bad on boost = The turbo seals are gone.

I would remove the head and do the job on the bench. A lot easier and even quicker as timing isn’t a problem on these engines. Even better - you can just replace all necessary timings components and clean up the head so you won’t need to worry about the engine for the next 100k miles

I'd hope that anyone who considers attempting this level of repair while the head is attached to the car feeding rope in to the cylinders would understand what they're signing up for. It can end badly.. just loose one keeper in an oil return galley and bobs your auntie. Definitely proceed with caution⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️

All pcv valves are junk, even the oem, they all leak. US Plastics Corp sells a one way check valve that's oil resistant and it's only a few bucks.

Tk106 I was recently looking at those exact one way check valves to make a crankcase ventilation line routing back into my intake instead of the solo line that's there now. It can also replace the tiny pcv? I'll have to try it out. Thanks 👍
@AWD_T
@AWD_T 4 жыл бұрын
Today's Project Guide you don’t need the check valve from vent to pre turbo, instead some install a filter or catch can to keep oil out of the turbo. It will only be pulling from the intake side. You’d want the check valve in the pcv to intake manifold. If you remove that pcv valve and blow in it, it will not hold. I have dual catch can, one for pcv that includes check valve and the other catch can from vent to pre turbo. I just checked my catch cans and there’s a few ounces of oil in there from just 700 miles. That oil would have 100% ended up in the intake. There’s a thread on dsmtuners.com. Great site with a ton of information.
