In this video, I walk you through the process of changing the ratchet on dt swiss exp hubs where one side is threaded into the hub. DT Swiss 180 and 240 exp hubs use this newer system. You can do this at home, here are the tools and how to.
Part Numbers:
Upgrade Kit: HWYXXX00N9376S - no bearings, there is a version with new bearings if you need them.
Ring Removal Tool: HXTXXX00N8387S
Bearing Tool: HXTXXX00N6106S

I’ve now watched this 17,000 times. Waiting on the bearing tool tool- ended up getting a little press tool for it. Shipping from England is taking forever. I know you used your vice- could a large crescent loosen the fixed ratchet- will the correct tool, of course.

You can, just know it is very tight and be careful not to smash your knuckles or the rim.

I ended up using a socket wrench that fit the tool. It certainly made some noises I didn’t want to hear from my $3,000 wheelset. Ha! Thanks for your video- it totally helped. I appreciate it.

@@dustinjerald6432 i eventually got a comically large torque wrench which gave me the leverage. That made it super easy.

Thanks for the explanation! ... Good god, now you need tools for nearly 80 bugs in the first place ... asking myselft what the actual benefit is of that "new" system ... obviously it's not the rider who benefits here. 😉 Will try to find a shop who has this tools ...

Seriously, just keep adding the standards....I agree only the rider loses over time with all the bike changes that don't really matter.

This new exp version is much more complicated now. I think mavic id 360 hub is much more easier to service and replace the ratchet. No tools needed at all.

Yeah, but when a bike comes with these hubs you manage what you have. If buying new I would agree other hubs are easier to maintain.

Nice job! I wonder what they solved by going this route versus the old ratchet style. Any ideas?

Less moving parts and the ever important weight reduction. Not an e-bike friendly hub.

Actually their patent was up on the previous design meaning anyone could then use the design for their hubs. So they are trying to protect their IP by designing a new system which would give them a new patent. I get it but at the same time they made their product more difficult for the end user to use just to protect their profits. People like me who are devout DT Swiss user aren't going to switch to another brand ripping off DT. Though their marketing dept will tell you it was "less moving parts, and weight reduction"

what wheels are you using with the 180 hubs? Do you use the 180's for trail riding or enduro type riding? Trying to determine if I build a set of wheels with 180 hubs.

I am running a 27mm internal We Are One in the rear, the faction, and a Union, 30mm internal in the fornt. I use these for XC/trail. I am not sure how tough the 180 hubs are, for enduro I would go with the 240s. The weight difference would not be worth the relaibility concerns on tougher courses. But for a trail bike, all day!

@@LoamRoamer Nice. I'm building a wheelset for a yeti ARC hardtail so more trail/xc oriented. I have a full on enduro bike for smashing through stuff. haha. How often do you have to service the 180 hubs?

Hello, the red washer goes right through the hub and stops against the bearing? Is there a gap between the bearing and the toothing? It happens to me that the red washer moves laterally and the ratchet jumps when pedaling, could that be the problem Min 9;10

No, there should be a spring if it is on the outer part of the hub, the part touching the driver body. If your spring is backward or has too much grease, I could see it causing skipping. But not sure why it would otherwise. It might be a good question for a shop to open and take a look.

@@LoamRoamer Totally, I would just be weary of how using that much grease can influence failure using the new EXP system
