I recently got DT 770 Pro 250ohm version. And the wire for the right earcup was angled weirdly which was driving me crazy (OCD probably!). I wanted the wires to be beautifully symmetrical on both sides of the headphones!. At 18:29 you removed one earcup, rotated it once and screwed it back in order to get the wire to follow the same curve as the other side. This was what I was looking for. It took me less than 2 minutes to do the same thing and now my headphones look perfectly symmetrical too! Thank you so much for showing it (even though it's a minor detail and 99% of people won't even bother), this video was highly useful to me! Your channel is a godsend for all Beyerdynamic headphone owners. I don't know why Beyerdynamic doesn't bother putting a detachable cable themselves. It's such a low hanging fruit. So many potential DT 770 pro buyers go with ATH M50x just because of the detachable cable!

Nice video, I did this to my cans with a slight modification I used balanced jack, since mine are 250 ohms and I want to use them with a powered portable amp. If you use Canon ITT Mini XLR: M-XL-3-14, and bevel around the mating surface where the jack screws into the cup you can get a flush mounted jack, instead of the slight protrusion like I see when people use the Rean mini-xlr jacks. It’s only about .5 mm of extra material removed and if supported with hot glue it will be solid.

love your work but idk why would u make it heavier does it make it sound better or is it just a preference thing ?
@CustomCans2 жыл бұрын
The weight is added to the driver enclosure . Essentially it gives a bit more mass for the diaphragm to push against. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, so as the diaphragm is moved in an out, the enclosure tries to move and flex the baffle. Adding more weight in the right places means that the enclosure is harder to move so more of the energy goes into making sound, especially in the sub bass region where the diaphragm has to move a lot. So... the mass loading helps the driver recreate the very low frequencies more accurately with less harmonic distortion.

Ok, I got a question for you. I just got the mass loading and dampening kit in the mail today and did it, but now my left audio isn't working. Was working fine prior to that and the solder joints still look solid. Right channel works perfectly fine though. Any idea where I went wrong? I removed the lead weights just to be sure it wasn't an issue of something getting shorted out, and it still wasn't working. I also got the detachable cable conversion but I don't have the time to get my soldering iron set up until the weekend, so I'll be able to test that then, but until then I'm at a loss on what happened.
@CustomCans2 жыл бұрын
It is very tricky to tell without testing everything with a multimeter. Hopefully you have broken a wire or maybe a strand of wire has come loose and causing a short. Worst case scenario, you have broken a voice coil wire, that can be pretty fatal. Are they the newer ones with the wires soldered to a little PCB or the older style with wires soldered to metal stakes?
@cardsfanbj2 жыл бұрын
@@CustomCans newer style with the PCB. I'm not 100% sure, but I think what happened was actually an issue with the iPod I was using to test the audio. Hi, I got a DT990 recently and I'd like to know if it's possible to mod it with a 6.35 jack? Is there enough room I don't know how much these kind of socket need and I don't really want to ruin a pair of working headphones lol Also, I don't know much about audio so I don't know if it need specific cables, I noticed some had not only copper inside, regular wires wouldn't do the job ?
@CustomCans3 жыл бұрын
I like your style... Go big or Go home ;) - but... no it would not be easy to do as those sockets are quite deep and will probably hit the driver

Hi. Does the damping also fix the "Beyerpeak"? I also have an amp with balanced 2x xlr (1 left, 1 right) and I'm unable to find any adapters for my specific case (mini xlr to 2x xlr). Do you have any links for me?
@CustomCans3 жыл бұрын
Yes - our latest version with the foam insert does smooth it a bit. Here is a link to a cable that you could use with this mod jfunk.org/wpc/product/ultra-low-capacitance-balanced-litz-cable-with-single-4-pin-mini-xlr-for-dt177x-hdj-x10-and-modified-balanced-beyerdynamics/ And here is a link to pre-modded headphone with a 2 x 3 pin XLR option jfunk.org/wpc/product/modified-dt990-for-pono-player/

@@CustomCans As said, I need short adapter cables because of the price. My budget doesnt have place for 190€ for just cables. Because of that, I would like to do the whole mod myself but I am unable to find proper litz.Is there a way to get litz and paracord for the whole mod from you?

So basically, the DT770 and DT990 use the same drivers, but they are configured differently internally. DT770 has sort of a ring around the driver that bridges to the back and closes it off similarly to any other closed headphone... MDR7506, ATH-M40X, etc. The DT990 doesn't have that tube piece inside, but has the vents, which are dampened a bit to tune the sound.... so what happens if I 3D print a new cup, that has vents on the back, stick some DT880 dampening foam in the back of that, and install it on a DT770 without the internal tube piece?... I would essentially have an intermediate between the 990 and 770 headphones. Maybe I can get the cleaner bass of the 990s and the cleaner treble of the 770s into one headphone.
@CustomCans3 жыл бұрын
It would probably not be that easy - there are so many things that effect the sound... it would be possible but would probably take a lot of testing and tuning to get them to sound the way you want
@ulfrinn87833 жыл бұрын
@@CustomCans Well in a sense I've already achieved maintaining good treble on the DT770s while letting off some of the excess base for a far more balanced frequency response simply with a pad swap to some aftermarket velours.

can you make the hole for the mini xlr connector with a drill bit or would you advise against it
@CustomCans3 жыл бұрын
I would advise against it. if you use a drill bit it is likely to end up central to the original hole and the driver won't fit back in. With a burr tool you can eat away at the plastic slowly and get the hole in the right place more easily. Have a look at the ridge the driver sits on.... the hole needs to be below that line. Burr tools only cost a few quid and you could use one in a normal drill
@tom-xu1ek3 жыл бұрын
@@CustomCans perfect thanks for the advice. ill try and find a 9mm burr bit

@CustomCans2 жыл бұрын
It is a bit tricky to tell without having a look. If you have the older kit with the lead weights then I would check to make sure you have not blocked any of the holes on the back of the driver, If that is not it, you could email us some pictures of the install and we may be able to see something J
