AJ's demeanor in this scene is really telling. He shows no enthusiasm over college when earlier in the show he gleefully said he wanted to go to harvard or west point but tony shot it down. Then here he is proud to have earned a C on his paper when he was never a good student, and Carmela immediately insults the grade, and AJ's look of pride drops. C is an average grade and AJ is a below average student. Belittling his achievements, no matter how small, completely shatters his self confidence.

@Jaegar19Ultima What a dumbass and ill-informed comment. Plenty of poor students work hard and earn academic scholarships proving that poor doesn't make you less smart. The only link between being poor and intelligence would be access to proper nutrition during growing years and good schools (which encourage critical thinking and other necessary skills). But as I said that can and has been negated by scholarship programs and other ways to access healthy food. Nature only gives a predisposition but nurture and environment can provide the rest.

Someone pointed out that Carmela was “helping” AJ out with that paper, which adds even more context to why she was so upset about not understanding Billy Budd. Not only did she get denied by Furio, she also got hoed by proxy thru AJ’s teacher an now Meadow and her elite friends. All Carm cares about is status and appearances, without that and the little hope that Furio gave her for something deeper all she can do is lash out and be petty.

Contrary to popular belief, it was Carm who never had the makings of a varsity athlete... You can see how trapped Carmella was and she knew it too. She was jealous of everyone including her own daughter. Every time she tries to make a little something for herself she’s reminded that Tony controls everything. She felt genuine love for Furio, as opposed to the deeply ingrained resentment for Tony- I feel so bad for her. But like Artie’s wife (I can’t remember her name) said “We both made our choices. I made my choice, I’m happy with my life” EVERYTHING about this show is amazing! The writing, the character development! I just cannot cope 😍

It’s clear from this scene that Carmella’s memory of the book stem from her adolescent or innocent years, so she has a fond regard for the book. Ironic that she should use the term ‘picked on by an evil boss,’ at a time when she was emotionally drawn to Furio.
