Interesting. Great review. Nice work finding a 4k disk with both. I agree, DTS and dtshd and ma always had the edge. But Atmos is just putting more money it seems in putting it in most 4ks now. DTS x seems far behind now...

Nice Theater, I have to agree with you in noticing DTS typically having deeper sound in general, I always look for films with it, but admittedly have not done a DTS X to Atmos comparison like this. I have the means to do so with my nice setup and will now go about doing just that. The trouble as you pointed out is finding films with both formats, I have a NAS to stream from which passes through audio ( I use Emby as my server ) . If not on the same disk but a version with both formats I'm pretty sure I could extract audio then remux the 2 audio tracks into one MKV container quite easily ( if I can find a film or films with a version of each audio) Thanks for the inspiration , DTS fan at Heart for sure (you can't go wrong with higher bitrates! )

@@myhometheater7029 Thanks I checked out your 2nd Vid. Although I wanted to do my own version of your Atmos to DTS X comaparin mine ended up being more of a Dolby multichannel vs DTS multichannel comparrasin. The last couple days I have played multiple movie scenes as well as Audio Demos from both Dolby & DTS, what I observed surprised me, in general the Dolby audio is simply louder. To bring my system fully alive with Dolby I set my receiver @ around -32 to -34 db.( anymore than that was simply unneccessary ) To get the same volume with DTS I have to increase to - 26 to -24 db ( That alone was enexpected ) Now with my receiver decoding correctly and direct playing each file the Dolby multichannel is crisper and does have a bit more bass ( definately ) I did not observe any bnefits of some of the higher Bitrate lossless DTS files vs the Dolby Lossles files. ( again I was surprised by this ) So without a doubt on my system the Dolby shines, as said its just that much more Crisp on the highs & deeper in the bass. In my home theater experience up till now had been prioritizing DTS tacks if I could get them. I had the same 5.1 system for around 15 yrs at least and component wise the build quality was excellent ( in paticular the receiver ) and could swear the DTS sounded better and became a loyal advocate. I'm wondering if it was the way the receiver decoded or if there was more going on there. In any case with my current 7.1 its definately changed & the Dolby audio sounds much better ( Its surprisingly obvious ) I cant beleive I hadn't noticed how much of a difference there actually is for me. Thanks for inspiring me to look into this ! Cheers

So coming from a sound mixer point of view, they most likely had 1 or 2 people working on each mix so there will be differences in the mix depending on how the mixer felt that day. But they don't really just do one mix for all formats if they want it to sound good. I would go with your general observation that most soundtracks are better with DTSX because they are less compressed.

When Atmos I use Atmos output, otherwise I like DTS more, especially DTS:X (very few) over Atmos (a lot including streaming). For all DTS I use Neural:X up-mixing and even for DD/DD+ +Neu:X up-mixing. I have Denon X3800H with 5..1.2 setup. DTS sounds more wide and especially the center channel (dialog) is louder and clearer. For PS5 again, DTS sounds better than Dolby. For stereo music definitely stereo mode or Direct/Pure.

When mentioning that you always thought DTS was superior, if referring to pre-lossless codec, then it may be because DTS was compressed at a higher bit-rate than dolby. It always sounded more impactful to me also. But now I think it just comes down to the specific audio mix your listening to and less has to do with the format.

Yes way back when dts first came on the scene they were the best. I had lots of dts laserdisc and the sound was amazing. Then when dvd and even Blu-ray came out dts to me always had an edge. I still think dts x is no slouch! If you haven’t watched the Harry Potter movies in dts x or the Incredible Hulk you should they are amazing! I wish movie studios would give us the option on our current movies to have dts x and atmos. Then we could get and idea which is better. But honestly I’ll take either cause they both sound good to me in my theater.

On a bluray source, both formats are based on lossless or uncompressed algorithms, Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio which are virtually impossible to distinguish to human ear. What Atmos and X bring to the table is the extra object based soundtracks which can be played by height speakers (placed on the ceiling, unless an approximation via virtualisation is used in a classic 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 etc setup). However, on a streaming service, Dolby Atmos will not be based on Dolby TrueHD but on a compressed version Dolby Digital Plus, which has a much lower bit rate than TrueHD, and even a lower rate than its DTS compressed or lossy equivalent. In this scenario, we're back to the DVD times when DTS sounded a lot better at 1.5Mbps than Dolby at 640Kbps.

Louder bass does not equal better sound. The only thing you are measuring here is how loud the bass is, not how good the soundtrack is overall. As a sound mixer, I can tell you if all things were equal, there should be no difference between X and Atmos - they are just sound distribution formats. Not only that, there is no indication whatsoever that this comparison was level matched, which makes this comparison useless.
@myhometheater70294 жыл бұрын
It wasn’t useless. They were the same volume and the atmos was more dynamic and louder on bass. But you’re welcome to buy the movie and test it yourself and post a video. I’d like to hear your thoughts on it being you’re an expert.
@terrencebroadnax17544 жыл бұрын
@@myhometheater7029 What did you use to match the two levels? Did you verify both came from the same master? Was the encoding done by the same mastering house? If they both came from the same master and were mastered at identical levels, there should be no difference between the formats. The fact that you stated they were level matched and Atmos was more dynamic and louder in the bass shows different mastering was done on each, which means this is not about the codecs themselves but demonstrates how mastering difference can reveal playback differences.

@zombeat73763 жыл бұрын
Imo I do not think you can tell which one is best using a sound level meter. Being louder on decabels does not necessarily make it better. I would say it should work more in terms of what you actually hear and what's coming from above you. It could be clearer sound but not be as punchy and loud.
@myhometheater70293 жыл бұрын
I stated that they were very close in comparison. There was no overhead effect at all in either version. The only difference I could tell was the bass on the atmos was louder puncher! That’s what I stated.

This is a great review, Chris. If i may ask soemthing. I've seen about a dozen movie recorded in DOLBY ATMOS in Atmos installed theaters, but looks like there are very few that i can feel sound from above/ceilling. Batman vs Superman (i only hear sound from above on scene when young Bruce stand n his feet after he fall, i can clearly hear bats sound from ceilling. But that's it. Ant-man and the Wasp i clearly hear percussion beat from ceilling when Luis (Michael Pena) start talking about where is Scott Lang. that is all. Is that real recording or it have something to do with the quality from copies. ? Thank a lot - regards from Indoneisa

I guess I would not have asked that, but Impressed with the movies Midway and Saving Private Ryan in Atmos , so now knowing you have 2 heights, it's an unfair comparison to DTS X. that don't require height channels IMHO. (yes it's subjective). Planes and bullets going from rear to front heights and ambient sounds all over is awesome. I can understand why you'd like DTS X better. I have not watched a DTS X movie yet though. I am so happy I went through the cost and headache upgrading. Enjoy
