Enjoyed the video... For the sake of v-loggers I understand the need for the auto focus to improve. Content is king in that genre. I also feel that this video of yours proves that the GH5 and for Panasonic in general the AF is serviceable for this purpose. As you also pointed out, all cameras struggle in low light. However, for the filmmaker, auto focus is not a priority. The whole process of filmmaking is at play and auto focus is such an insignificant part of it, that it hardly matters. I am often surprised at how many videos I have viewed that were literally filmed with a GH5 or even a GH4, by people who are genuinely focused on their area of interest that the technology does not hinder them. From a science channel to a person living in an automobile. I have come across people camping, or on adventure hikes, to cooking channels. Sometimes they list the equipment they use to film in the description, other times I have glimpsed the camera via a reflection, casually swept past a mirror, or a secondary camera pointed at the other... I believe most people who are using the GH5 are not tech vloggers, but rather people with an idea and a limited budget, and they realize that the GH5 or Lumix cameras in general are the best bang for buck when it comes to hybrid cameras with an emphasis on video... .

very helpful, thanks. I have the Viltrox adaptor with my Tokina lens. I updated that to 3.4, and that combined with the 2.6 update to the GH5 has things working better. Your settings helped too.

I just shot 6 concerts with 4 GH5’s. I was running close-ups with the 35-100 f2.8 Panasonic. I shot all but one in auto focus. I was using firmware 2.7. I used area auto focus and HD. The one concert I shot in 4K, I had to switch to manual focus. The auto focus was all over the place in 4K. After editing these concerts, I was very impressed. It was very consistent and their was no hunting. I used a Ninja V with red peaking and the GH5 with peaking set to blue because I was nervous and because of the stage lighting.

I’ve noticed the speed and responsiveness settings play a big part to. If you set it to 0 it has a smoother response with not as much hunting

I don't think that people prefer dual because of the speed of focusing. Sometimes you don't want to focus ultra fast, it does not look natural in certain scenarios. The problem is that contrast auto focus needs hunting because it will go over and under focus until it finds the right mark. Having dual pixel auto focus means your camera knows exactly how far it needs to go before reaching focus, not only does it mean you can focus faster (which is not always desired) but it also means it does not hunt for the focus. That's the main benefit. Just saying.

Lenses with large apertures and no focus breathing behave quite acceptable, e.g. the 10-25mm Leica. I felt that a slower focus adjustment speed did smooth out the hunting a little. Thanks

Thank you for working on the GH5 AF tweaking and the new firmware! I have a G85 and it looks like no new firmware for me! Your results were very good in terms of the GH5 grabbing and holding AF in your desired subject -- like holding the lens in your hand near the GH5 and then having the focus shift back to your face. But I still saw -- when I was purposefully looking for it, some focus pulsing in the background. Now at those times the main focus did not drift -- if your face was in focus, it stayed -- but whatever algorithm that Panasonic uses, it still does some searching on the background (is it subtly opening-up/closing-down the aperture and what we're seeing is a teeny increase/decrease in the DOF -- and all the while the actual plane of focus is still on your face?). So -- if the viewer's attention is held by the subject in focus, hopefully they won't see that pulsing of the focus of the background. Unfortunately on the G85 the pulsing is much more noticeable -- even though the "locking on" of the focus subject (depending on the camera settings and brightness of the scene) is pretty good. Impressive performance there. I'm still setting up my new GH5 and this is reassuring. But I can certainly confirm that there are a lot of factors at work here. I've got a Canon M6 with pretty solid dual-pixel autofocus generally but it, too, will struggle in certain situations. It's like you say, the more you experiment and give the system every advantage you can, the better the performance is likely to be. You've proven here that at least for vlogging, the new GH5 firmware can cut the gig if given a fighting chance. Thanks!

Tested it out. I went from v1.0 on my GH5S to v1.4 and it was better. v1.0 was giving me a noticeable stair step autofocus to each point, and definitely over shot multiple times before locking focus. Focus was good after it locked. v1.4 is a much smoother (no stair step) autofocus. Still overshoots, but if you turn down the speed it isn’t as noticeable. Smoothly stops

I’ve tried time and time again to get a right autofocus setting on the GH5 but it’s never good. Too much pulsing or super slow to react. This video has inspired me to give it one more go, I’ll let you know what I find...

Thanks Stronz! When i had my GH5, AF was helpful when filming myself for youtube content, it's not perfect, but at least it gives me an option when I'm on a gimbal. Otherwise I'm so used to manual focus I prefer that when operating the camera :)

My results were not as good as what you got. Idk it’s frustrating. I did pick up a Sony a6400 and I’ve been testing them both out. If I could count on the Panasonic I would be oh so happy... thanks for your video will have to do some more testing

Thanks for doing this. I have two GH5's and normally I use manual focus but there are times that auto focus would come in handy. I notice that in your shots, the camera did not pulse after it acquired focus. This is important to me. I can deal with the focus being off but I can't deal with the pulse.

Maybe in daylight the gh5 can focus nearly as good as the 80D. A few weeks ago I had a concert shoot in a kind of difficult light situation. I could totally rely on the dual pixel focus. There wasn’t one single moment where the focus pumped or wasn’t perfectly smooth. I would never take my Gh5s to such events. But one advantage of the Gh5s is that I can crank up the ISO to 25000 and can close the aperture to 12. So I almost don’t need to focus:-) Nevertheless, thank you for sharing your experiences and settings!

I can see your back lamp pulsing in and out. doesn't matter what panasonic do with the firmware. in order for the camera to insure AF on target. it needs to go in/out to confirm the focusing. That's what cause the pulsing. I love the panasonic camera. and the only thing i can't stand was the AF. i'm not a MF person so have the switch to sony. I told myself if one panasonic have the PDAF. I will switch back, just hope by then I'm not heavily invested in sony glass. Thank you for the comparison.

I often shoot Model airplanes in motion, but struggle with focus. Do you have any good pointers or tips on setup for fast moving objects. Im not a pro but would love to get some tips. I only use native lenses. For the planes i use 12-60mm f2.8

You can try using tracking focus. I don’t know the exact scenario and how your filming them but you wouldn’t have to focus too much if there flying across the horizon of the image. It would be more difficult if your head on and quite close to the model airplanes

What if I just left it on AF-On and did not choose "near" or "far", would that work, and be more versatile? What if I leave the AF Custom Setting to "off"? Does all this apply to the GH5s? Also, do you know about YodaYeo' autofocus fix by setting the shutter angle to 179? Should we also have that set, as well as these settings you have mentioned here?

Heyo! You can leave the near and far off. It's probably best if you do move the camera around a lot, that just provides another level of control if you were trying to focus close, it won't try and focus on something distant. It should work with the GH5s and G9 as well. I don't know if the 179° shutter is still applicable after the recent firmware updates but its worth a try! Hope this helps

hi Nate, thanks for your video - as I am mostly filming moving scenes I find it more reliable to be in 'Manual focus' rather than 'autofocus'- However I've been mostly focusing by moving the focus point with my finger (the little square) on the touch screen on the desired object- without using the focus ring - I have found it quite reliable, have you been using that method? The only thing I've noticed is that the focus point (a square) is only moving when I am filming in one of my custom settings of 4k-60fps...I can't get the focus point (the square) to move on the other settings....any idea? thx! :)

Try to do this with a fast lens like f1.8 or faster? with 2.8 wide angle you have basicaly almost everything in focus if not close to the lens. Just saying ;)

Hi, Maybe you can help me out here.. I often Vlog during exhibitions, where I interview my customers. My customer and I are in the frame when using my Lumix Leica 8-18 mm lens, but in many cases when there are people passing by in the background, the camera hunts for focus a lot. Do you have a suggestion how I can overcome this problem?

I would set continuous autofocus off. Press half shutter to grab focus at the subject when interviewing them, and focus will stay there. This will do the job great if there not moving toward or away the camera often. I’m assuming they would be at one spot

Can you show me how to do it on the G85? Also, please email panasonic and get them to release the same autfocus update that they did for the G9 and GH5. They're just being lazy with their less expensive cameras and not updating the firmware!

I have a speed booster on my gh5, and when I'm in 4k with VFR, my auto focus won't work; but as soon as I switch to 4k 24fps, it works fine. Any idea why? Thanks!

My assumption would be autofocus probably doesn’t function in VFR. 60p should work in the non VFR mode

zarrar ahmed malik2007 G7 is no longer updated and doesn’t have some of these settings. I own the G7 and love it. I just don’t use the autofocus on it.

zarrar ahmed malik2007 I’ve used autofocus on the G7 before, it’s not as reliable, but works decent on a gimbal. Canon and Sony do have a better system, you just got to know when you can use it to work for you

Manual focus isn’t that bad. Just use back button focus you can also use the touch screen to show where you want focus. The g7 is awesome

I still wouldn't use AF with GH5 for serious shoot, whereas with A7iii I can trust it can smoothly track and won't pulsate even if it loses focus.

I have the same settings since the moment I've updated to 2.6....buuuuut the results are... not ... what...I expected. These settings are Ok, maybe for a studio shoot, like yours for example, but if you use it outside (like me), the autofocus just doesn't work.
