I lived there for almost two years. As a first-world expat, I was treated and paid really well. At first it all seems wonderful. But it is the Kardashian of cities: It's rich, it looks great from the outside, it is shiny and slick and new. But you scratch the shiny surface and realize quickly that it's rotting from the inside due to the fact that the Emiratis care nothing about human life. In fact, they consider the third-world workers (Bangladeshis, Sri Lankans, Indians, Pakistanis, Philippinas) to be less than human and treat them as such. They tolerate and coddle the Europeans, Americans and Aussies because they have to, but treat the others as slaves. It's a despicable culture and I realized my soul was shriveling by living there and perpetuating the lifestyle.

I've been in Dubai Downtown where Burj Khalifa is located.I saw those workers working on their sites.They worked for almost 12 hours/day six days a week with very little salary of about 800-1000 AED e.i Dirham (less than $1 a day) this is fact almost 6-8 workers used to live in a single room.Many companies don't offer their workers proper food,no proper transportation,no laundry,no health insurance and no salary increment.Companies in UAE bound their labor/workers for at least 2 years with holding their passports, workers can't even resign and change jobs.So, I saw workers were in very situation in UAE.I'd like to recommend people not to go to middle east for jobs specially in UAE & SAUDIA.Better stay in your country with your family.Earn less but lead a happy life.
@Ek3abood10 жыл бұрын

You don't need to feel sorry for me or anyone else.Deduct the transportation,food,medical and others daily expensive.What a worker can save? It's almost less than $1.If I agree with ($7 a day) as you're calculating.You mean $7 pay for 12 hours duty.What a crazy joke.

Tala Nahhas Yes absolutely you're right and I agree with you.But what about 6-8 workers living in a single room without any laundry? What about no health and life insurance? All workers in middle east including Dubai work for 12 hours.If a man is working for 12 hours then how can he enjoy his social/personal life? They are working in a condition that they can't resign/change their jobs because their passports are held by the company.I think Sheikh's dogs are in better condition than their workers.

and the poor making poor decisions ... they weren't kidnapped...their own countrymen sold them into slavery and sex trafficking etc...they were lured by the idea of 'easy money." For some, the dollar a day wage is actually better than they get in their native land...they own country is typically run by dictators and socialists that promised them all they wanted to hear and make their people starve and then hope other country sends billions in aid and pocket the money and aid for themselves...look at what happened in Venezuela? or what is happening in any Democrat district in California or NY!! only the illegals and refugees have rights there and more and more regular people end up on the streets...some actually gave up the rat race and live off handouts....some unwilling to work people make more $$$ than people who worked hard for years to earn a degree....sad.

What is the news? I worked back in the Middle East from the 1980's and it was always a case of 'slave labour" whereby the people from Asia desperate to support their families back home would work all hours under virtual slave conditions, working under the full day sun and it gets really HOT. Exploitation is nothing new and has been going on for a long time so what is the news. In some of these Middle Eastern states they nick your passport so you are under bondage and servitude for many years and often do not get the money you are promised. Always felt very sorry for these people but it is all down to money and power.

@ur4me100 More civilized and tolerant of other nations?? Sharia law prevails in the UAE. And, whenever Sharia law prevails..there is no such thing as civilized or tolerant. UAE is not an exception in the Arab world; they are exactly the same as other Arab nations. Their only exception is..they hide it better. But.I can tell you this: Break one of UAE's Sharia laws..and you will find yourself in the same amount of trouble as in any other Arab nation..and the penalty will be just as severe. Hugging a friend in public can land you in jail for many months in the UAE. And, if you buy or sell any kind of drugs..even marijuana..you could face the firing squad in the UAE. So, civilized and tolerant.. the UAE is not..nor are they an exception. Under the UAE's Sharia law..you run the same risks as in any other Arab country..so BE VERY CAUTIOUS when visiting the UAE!!

@ur4me100 Of course they treated you right because I'm sure you did nothing wrong. But, if you had broken Sharia law..you would be telling a completely different tale. And..yes women do not have to cover their heads. That is a part of what I mentioned before..how they hide things by appearing to be more tolerant. They despise terrorist groups, and yet they terrorize women who have been beaten, assaulted and raped..by throwing them into jail right along with the rapists..for the crime of unlawful unmarried sex acts. What a wonderfully civilized society the UAE is for abused women.

DjDialogic The USA was/is built upon slavery/indentured servitude too! The problem is the American psyche is hypocritical and practices selective amnesia

I live in Dubai and this city is very challenging. You have to be alert every day because every day brings its own challenges. If you really want to succeed in this city stay low profiled and send your money home the moment you earn it. The attraction of this city is so overwhelming that you will be left with no money when you go back home.

You know what though, the US was like this not too long ago. I do understand what the minister is saying about "growing pains" we sit back in our developed country and judge other countries having their civil wars and their labor issues when we went through the same sorts of things when we were developing our nation. I mean we have issues now even, so I wish we wouldn't be so high and mighty about it. I do hope those workers get better conditions, but this is not a problem unique to Dubai

90% of the immigrant workers who built these Skyscrapers were tortured by their Employers. Some were chained and not allowed to go back their countries.
