noice. pricey though, but i guess for it it is, aint that bad. quick question. can one connect this thing to a pc and then route just the bassline track from a daw and effect it and record it?
@Componental3 ай бұрын
Hey @cordlesswire Yes, that’s totally possible with Dubby. With four inputs and four outputs, you can easily route multiple channels-either 4 mono, 2 stereo, or dual mono balanced-making it great for processing individual tracks, like a bassline from your DAW. We’re actually working on some dedicated multi-effects specifically for bass. Just yesterday, we tested Dubby with a Sub Driver / Sub Harmonics / Maxx Bass-style algorithm on Dub Manza Soundsystem here in Copenhagen, and it was seriously powerful! If you’re curious, check out the first version we created for @dubmanza5846 here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qJW6domnn9l7q5I. And on the note of price, this algorithm will of course be freely available on the Dubby App Store, free to flash and use on your Dubby. How would you like to shape your bass sound with Dubby?

Reminds me of the old Muse Receptor Box. Nice to see the the format coming back, but my only gripe with many of these kickstarter boxes is the use of small screens, specially with all the results this thing has. we are not in the 90s anymore!
@Componental3 ай бұрын
Why would you like a bigger screen? :) Dubby’s design philosophy is aimed at tactile, physical interaction, using the screen primarily for settings and feedback, not as the main interaction hub. Instead, Dubby encourages hands-on control through joysticks, sliders, and buttons, keeping it intuitive and performance-oriented. This setup may seem unconventional by today's standards, but it’s crafted for musicians who want to keep their focus on sound manipulation rather than screen navigation. The goal is a balance between flexibility and ease, letting users focus on their music while offering deep control through modular hardware rather than a large touchscreen interface. We appreciate feedback like this as we continue evolving Dubby!

cool, but can you have multiple effects/synths installed at the same time and then change them from the machine itself? or can you only load and use them one by one from the computer?
@Componental3 ай бұрын
Good question! Yes, Dubby can load and switch between multiple effects and synths on-device, but it depends on CPU usage-some DSP-heavy algorithms will use more processing power. For flexibility, you can switch from 96kHz to 48kHz to boost processing. Plus, we offer multi-effect algorithms, and most effects in our Dubby App Store already combine several effects.

8MB external flash and 64MB RAM doesn’t seem like a lot. What am I missing?
@raskjaerbo3 ай бұрын
It's an embedded audio device highly specific for real-time audio processing, so it does not run a full OS like Linux :)
@Componental3 ай бұрын
Great question! Dubby is designed around the Daisy Seed platform, which prioritises real-time performance for audio applications. While 8MB flash and 64MB RAM may seem modest, the key lies in how efficiently it operates for audio DSP tasks. This setup, with an ARM Cortex-M7 processor, allows Dubby to handle effects processing and synthesis with minimal latency and high stability-perfect for live performance where responsiveness is crucial. The flash and RAM enable complex audio processing algorithms, especially as Dubby allows custom programming in Max/gen and C++.

Hi @scottk3292 we hope to support Rust in the future. Currently, it is not fully compatible, but looking at Electrosmith documentation on Daisy might point you in a direction. If we can find maintainers who would like to help, we're happy to get a team going once our repositories go public. Feel free to join our Discord to stay tuned: discord.com/invite/swUnCvDbvf

@Componental3 ай бұрын
Thanks for your feedback. We understand that price is a key factor, especially on Kickstarter, and we’ve designed Dubby with different entry points to make it as accessible as possible. The Kickstarter price is €535 with aluminium corners and an acrylic case, and our early-bird offer is €456. For those who prioritise cost and features over casing, the DIY kit is €355-no soldering required, just assemble and play! Dubby is packed with capabilities to support everyone from beginners to pros, and this pricing reflects the R&D, quadraphonic processing, and modular customisation that make it unique.

How does this significantly differ from organelle?
@Componental3 ай бұрын
Hi @NEALglotzt The Critter & Guitari Organelle and Dubby both invite users into a world of customisable sound design, but each device brings a unique focus. While Organelle is powerful for its use of Pure Data for patch-based synthesis and effects, Dubby’s design is crafted specifically with live performance, modularity, and custom hardware integration in mind. Dubby goes beyond stereo with quadraphonic capabilities, but more importantly, it is built for dynamic, hands-on control during live performance. Users can map parameters directly to hardware controls, such as knobs, sliders, and joysticks, making it easy to shape and evolve sound on the spot. Additionally, Dubby is modular in its hardware, allowing musicians to switch out side panels or add components like faders or footswitches for a truly customised setup. For those looking to dive deeper, Dubby supports Max/gen and C++ for developing unique effects and synth patches.. Both devices are powerful, but Dubby focuses on providing adaptability and live interactivity in a hardware platform designed to grow with its users. We hope this answers your question. Big high5 to Critter and Guitari nonetheless 💜

This is cool and all that, but the price is just too much. The whole "app store" thing doesn't instill a lot of confidence either. If I'm buying a unit I'd expect it to be fully capable of doing everything it can theoretically do without gating its full potential behind an additional premium...
@Componental3 ай бұрын
Hey @saldopri4263 Thanks for your thoughts! We aren’t sure where this concern comes from, as Dubby is the intended counterpart of gated, paywalled products. Dubby is designed to work at its full potential right out of the box, with no extra purchases required to unlock its capabilities. The Dubby App Store is there for discovery, but maybe the name gives a different impression? It gives users access to a range of free and open-source algorithms, with only a few optional, premium tools for those who want to explore even further. The vast majority of effects, synths, and tools we’ve developed are free and open, and we’re encouraging the community to add to this. Dubby is all about fostering creativity, openness, and accessibility, and your feedback helps us make sure that vision is clear. Thanks again, and let us know if there are any other concerns or questions we can help answer!
@saldopri42633 ай бұрын
@@Componental Thanks for the reply. I don't mean to be negative, but reading the Kickstarter FAQ and some of the comments around here it sounds like the intention is still to lock certain functionality behind extra payments. I quote: "For those who want to go deeper, we also offer a selection of premium algorithms that bring additional creative options. This premium content is optional, with the choice of purchasing individual tools or accessing all premium features through a subscription model." Attaching the words "premium algorithms" and "subscription model" to a product the average person has to shell out a good chunk of their monthly income for leaves a bit of a sour taste, especially knowing that your machine can "work at its full potential", but that potential doesn't include "premium algorithms". If the full potential is already there without these algorithms, why offer them in the first place? I get that Dubby can probably do a lot out of the box, and you can customise/code in other functionality if you so desire, which I can appreciate. However, I'd still feel bad buying into a platform which locks some things behind an additional cost, no matter how "optional" those things are... It's not so much that the unit is not capable without purchasing these premiums (probably), just that it feels bad knowing you bought something which can do more. Maybe I'm alone in this (but I doubt it), but when I buy a product, I want to be done. That should be it. There should be no additional purchases after that, even if they are optional.

Ok, so it is organelle?
@Componental3 ай бұрын
Hey @SimpleTrax Good question, you got us smiling :) Organelle is definitely up there with our inspirations, and we love what Critter & Guitari has done with it. Dubby, however, takes a different approach: while Organelle shines in patch-building, Dubby’s strengths are in its performance-oriented design, quadraphonic sound, and modular hardware. With Dubby, you can configure and personalize every detail, from side panels to multi-control mapping, for live use and real-time tweaking. It’s built to be flexible, both in studio and on stage, while handling multiple effects with ease. We’re excited to be part of this growing space of expressive music tools!

Norms Shield. This new thing is really unuseful...
@Componental3 ай бұрын
The Norns Shield by Monome and Dubby by Componental share some similarities in terms of offering an open-source platform for creating and exploring sound, but each has unique features catering to different needs and workflows. The Norns Shield, based on Monome’s Norns platform, is a DIY, open-source sound computer that provides a flexible environment for scripting audio processes. It’s mainly a software-based solution that runs custom scripts for sound processing, synthesis, and sequencing in Lua. It offers various synthesis engines, but customization requires coding, so it’s ideal for those comfortable with programming and experimenting with Lua scripts. Dubby, on the other hand, is a standalone device tailored for performance and immediate control, focusing on hardware interaction through modular design and real-time audio processing. It has quadraphonic capabilities and a performance-oriented interface with customizable physical controls (joysticks, sliders, knobs, etc.), which Norns Shield lacks. Dubby’s platform supports Max/gen and C++, with Pure Data integration planned, and an evolving Dubby App Store, making it easy for users to load effects and instruments right from a browser. This makes Dubby more accessible to users who want the flexibility of creating and modifying sound without extensive coding knowledge, while still appealing to those who enjoy customizing sound algorithms at a lower programming level.

Hi :) Dubby comes fully functional, packed with a solid lineup of free and open-source audio effects, synthesizers, and creative tools. We’ve designed it to provide everything you need for rich, immersive sound creation right out of the box. For those who want to go deeper, we also offer a selection of premium algorithms that bring additional creative options. This premium content is optional, with the choice of purchasing individual tools or accessing all premium features through a subscription model. Think of it as an extra layer for those interested in specialty sounds and advanced features, but it’s absolutely not required to enjoy the full Dubby experience. As an open-source platform, Dubby also allows you to create and customise your own tools and share them with the community, putting endless possibilities right at your fingertips.
