That's cool, here is A bit of information for you as i have worked a bit with fiberglass; put baby powder on your exposed skin, and it will make it so the fiber dose NOT get all stuck to you, The powder and fiber will blow off and will wash away in the shower. Try it you will love how good it works. The mold looks great !

It is a lot of work. And time consuming especially having to leave a full night for the gel coat to cure. But it’ll be worth it.

I hope you are able to get all of the resin drips off that bike. The part is coming along nicely. When I used to work as a fiberglass laminator, we would tear the glass mat for smoother layup rather than cut small strips to fit. We also cut as large pieces as possible to increase the strength of the parts, (fewer joints). The glass mat becomes quite stretchy when it is wet-out with resin, and any wrinkles can be rolled flat with a proper roller. So the pieces don't have to fit perfectly, they just need to be large enough to span across the contours and have some trim allowance left over. I probably would have formed that "tank" with no more than 2 or 3 cut pieces. Trimming the finished product with a grinder can be minimized by using a good utility knife just after the resin starts to set, but before it is fully cured. Grinding and/ or sanding fiberglass is such nasty job. Keep up the good work!
@forthebold
@forthebold 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips. The whole bike including frame and engine is being sand and aqua blasted after so rah all drips will be gone. Nice tip about tearing. I’ll be using proper shapes on the final split mould and when making the carbon fibre tank I’ll have to accurately cut them to make sure the fibre pattern is one piece. That’s going to be a tough one. 👍🏻

A thought... We use Durabuild (rather than a car paint type primer) polyester based, easy to apply (spray or brush), goes on thick or thin, easy to sand, can be polished - good results fast. (No affiliation, just like using the stuff). High Build EZ Primer first, followed by Surfacing Primer to finish.

A few additions to my last comment (on the last video) if you using these short fiber mats again for the final mold use a wire brush on your precuts.. then you have a smoother transition and following that a better adhesion on the layers above..

Honey wax release agent is better for fibreglass moulds than the blue pva stuff, on a fresh job, use about 6 coats of wax and don't buff the last coat of wax off, just gelcoat right over the top. Plasticine is really good for filling cracks and voids in moulds aswell, easier to use than wax filler. I used to make fibreglass overflow tanks for a job many moons ago.
@forthebold
@forthebold 4 жыл бұрын
Indeed. I’ll definitely be using a softer release agent as the PVA was the only one to hand after making the mould from the clay.

Hi, I would use Upol easy sand for body filler , isopon is a bit old school and hard work , then if you finish in 120 grit you can use polyester spray filler , loads of companies make it this is perfect for this , again finish it in 120 grit or to 180 then 2 pack primer as a surfacer ..wet sand too 600 or 800 and you can wax for your mould ..
@forthebold
@forthebold 4 жыл бұрын
Yep. That’s the one I’ve got. I just get into a habit of saying isopon as it’s what I grew up with. I generally use upol for my primer too when spraying.

I would honestly clean up that mold and finish the surface, and make another monocoque, and apply the fiberglass when your last coat of gel coat is tacky. You'll have less final smoothing to do on the monocoque, have more defined edges, and it will release from the mold much easier.
@forthebold
@forthebold 4 жыл бұрын
The mould is far from perfect as it has all the imperfections from the clay and when you run your hand over it you can feel waves. I’m a half way through smoothing the prototype already and it’s looking a lot better now with filler and a palm sander

As a handy tip for getting an eaiser release, you want to use the PVA after waxing on (and off) something like Partell Paste Wax #2 3 or 4 times.

@forthebold

If you use the correct resins it will. But as I’m creating it I’m starting to think if an aluminium tank hidden inside will be a better option. Less space but commercially better
@ailstedt77
@ailstedt77 4 жыл бұрын
@@forthebold Then if you would do it in carbon with the right resin. Would you do it in a top and bottom half and then fuse them together with resin or would you do an upper and lower mold, fill them with carbon fibre and resin use some kind of airbag/balloon to keep the tank in form to get a unibody tank and when it's dry pull the balloon through the tank lid hole. Which way would make the tank part more reliable? Sorry for sounding like a NOOB but I would really like to do something like this myself.
