Duck Hunting 2018 - Made A Move and It Paid Off

Myself and a couple buddies headed out to do some kayak duck hunting here in our late season in Virginia. With lots of water and warm temperatures the ducks were hitting the swamps so we went back into one to try and get on some mallards, wood ducks, and black ducks. The action kicked off pretty early and we dropped a few birds but the hole we were hunting was too small so we decided to make a move to a bigger spot later in the morning. It ended up paying off for us and we were able to bag 9 ducks out of our kayaks while getting to just hangout and enjoy the area we were hunting. Hope y'all enjoy!

It is the whole Atlantic flyway that will have the limit reduction Tristen. The numbers are down thats for sure, however I wish they had dropped it to 3 birds a few years ago instead of waiting all this time and then making a drastic change. The decline of the Atlantic flyway mallard numbers has been going on for 20 years, but they just now decided to take action.

Great hunt man! But if I may make a suggestion on flaring birds, you may not think it but most of those birds are flaring because they see you before you see them, face masks are the ticket, your setup is definitely sweet though. Keep it up, I'm loving the videos

I looked on your channel but didnt see a video of your kayak setup. I just got a kayak specifically for duck hunting and would like to see yours in depth especially if you have any modifications or anything that differentiates it from a standard kayak

@@HokeOutdoors opinion please. We're hunting a local NC swamp this weekend and my buddy is looking at downsizing our spread. Normally we're only running around a dozen decoys a rippler and a spinning wing. He's thinking that's too many even though we're still seeing 75 or so ducks. Swamp is something like a lot of your videos. Thoughts?

Depends, if you think the birds are getting decoy shy and/or are starting to pair up a lot then I'd run like 6 decoys and spread them out in pairs. If you're still seeing big flocks then I'd put out 12-18. Also if you see geese in there you could use a spread I like to run, 6-12 geese floaters and then a single pair of mallards.

I hunt all over VA but our weather is still warm and wet. Our average day for the late season so far has been 50+ degree highs and the nights are typically not getting below freezing. Plenty of rain to go around as well.

What area are you hunting? The population of wood ducks on the east coast is healthy and stable, hence the three bird per day bag limit. More nesting work is done for them out here than any other species of duck. I shoot every one I get the chance at and will continue to do so.
