My Dearest Brother Canberk, GOD bless and keep you. Your Duduk instructional videos are a blessing to us. I have a question. Is there any significant difference between a US$97 duduk versus a $250 “professional” model. What is your suggestion as to the best duduk for me to purchase. I already have several duduks but I have no master teacher to advise me of the quality of the instrument. I am a semiprofessional multi instrumentalist (brass, woodwinds, piano, accordion, violin viola cello Hungarian tarogato, cimbolum, oud, saz and tar and novice on the Qanun and Santur. The ney still haunts me. For some strange reason the LORD literally “dumped” of of this unusual musical ability on me. Somehow I must repay HIM back at least In part in song and music. The Russians and Ukrainians have such beautiful musical traditions. And their Liturgical hymns soar to the Heaven although many of the priests and monks and hierarchy are corrupt. I my self studied to be a priest and I was ready for ordination. But for reasons that no one was able to answer, I was 15 minutes away from ordination when the RUACHHAKODESH/HOLYSPIRIT decided otherwise. The Turks the Kurds the Armenians and Azeris creature such beautiful music from the heart. But satan does not want us to play music of praise together. When we play our music we are praying. In my experience most real musicians are peaceful and have a most positive attitude. You my Brother have that aura of GOD’s glory. However, now that I am no longer wealthy financially but it has been my life’s custom to play on instruments which are “too good for me” as I don’t want the instrument to hold me back. This tendency began after I realized that when playing the Bb clarinet in the seventh grade school band that I was not good enough to “escape” the position of the lowly Third Clarinet. Only at the end of the school year did I come to realize that there was a traumatic chip inside the embouchure of the clarinet mouthpiece, which rendered the entire instrument unplayable. Even Benny Goodman could not play that broken Bundy clarinet. This February I will be 75 years old. I must live to at least the Biblically allowable 120 years to squeeze in minimal learn to optimally perform and more perfectly perfect my musical techniques. But my work as a medical physician curtailed my time. Our music is a Gift from Our LORD GOD. Even King David was a Master Musician and composer. All of the Holy Psalms were set to music. I than our LORD for HIS gift of music to us and to the entire world. Brother Canberk, I detect in your and your character and gentle demeanor and humility that you are a GOOD man with a good Nephesh/Soul. Do not ever cease practicing and sharing your love and passion for the Heavenly gift of music. This music is given to us when he created us out of the dust! May the LORD is shine His Face upon you And May he grant you, your family and your loved ones that peace; that peace that this broken and shattered sinful world cannot give! Again, Thank you Brother.

Thanks, great stuff! I discovered Duduk music some years ago, it stirred something in me that I really have a difficult time explaining. It almost transports you back in time, takes you to a place that feels like a distant home, but also within the music you sense the sorrow and suffering of a tribe or people that you feel connected to, following them on their journey to the presence where you are now - where they remind you that life is brief, yet beautiful. I don't know, that's how I feel when I listen to it. Now I've decided to research more into it, I'd like to learn how to play, but I have sinus issues so I'm hoping that that doesn't become an issue. Thanks again for the lessons and for sharing the beautiful music in your other videos.

Thanks for continuing with the lessons. I look forward to the next ones and hearing your advice about intonation and playing in tune. I have a question about this... I have a pretty good Duduk and I've been trying for a long time to play in tune (I check the notes with a tuner), but it's always too high. Lately, I added some thread to the reed and somehow, I managed to play in tune for the lower notes (A to E). It's an A Duduk. But from F# and higher, the notes are almost a semitone too high no matter what I try. I inflate the cheeks and I try to use as little pressure as possible. As soon as I put the Parda or briddle on, no matter how little I push it, the F# sounds almost as G. I cover the holes below and lift only the finger I am supposed to (but I only play with 6 fingers for the moment). I don't want to give up on the Duduk but I'm running out of ideas.
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Dan, reeds are variable. It can get higher and lower sometimes, don't worry. If the duduk totally higher, you need to tune it. It is difficult to know the problem without seeing the duduk but if there is an intonation issue only in several notes, it can be caused by an improper reed for the body or a wrong placed and too small regulator. Or maybe the body is not tuned. Also, there is not a standart; if you bought the reed and the duduk from different makers, it can be a reason a well.
@danmusiceasy4 жыл бұрын
@ Thans! If the regulator has a problem, what can I do about it? Maybe it is too tight... The reed is from the same maker, Ethnictune.com. When I play the reed before it opens too much, the higher notes are in tune, but as soon as I need to put the regulator, the notes from F# and higher become one semitone too high...

Thanks a lot for these videos. I received a duduk as a present a couple of years ago. I haven't played it and I have noticed that the reed doesn't open very well. For any sound to come out I need to hold the sides (I play clarinet by the way). I soaked the reed in water for a couple minutes but the opening still seems too closed. What should I do to make the opening wider without over-soaking it? Thanks again.
3 жыл бұрын
Wetting it in the mouth is the best but if it is too slow, you can wet it with a cup of warm water. But you should be careful. don’t let it open too much.
