I think it's because coraline is perfectly shown from a child's perspective. Coraline doesn't understand the financial crunch of moving or work deadlines or how a serious injury can all affect people. Her mom is wearing a neckbrace so it's safe to assume she's probably missed work due to whatever accident caused it.

Thank you for recognizing that the parents were just super stressed out, and not just neglecting their daughter. So many KZbin reactors don’t see that. Besides the catalog, Coraline’s mother is still recovering from an accident which is why you see her wearing a neck brace. There were other signs that they were financially struggling. They were eating poorly at first, but got pizza and had a party with the neighbors after the catalog was finished. They tipped the moving men a dollar. They didn’t have much food in the refrigerator, etc. The story is told from Coraline’s perspective, so you really have to pay attention to details to see what’s going on with the parents. Again, props to you guys for noticing and mentioning it! 🤗

It’s very common for causes of neglect to be caused by troubles a parent is facing but it’s still neglect and it will still harm their child. Luckily the parents in this movie were able to sort out their financial struggles quickly both for their sakes and for the sake of their child

Honestly they are exactly as all the parents I ever knew in my life, and they weren’t “neglecting”, they had problems but still love their children and took care of them pretty well. Coraline is not a baby to need her parents 24/7🤔🤨, they were fine, normal.

The book is creepier. Also, there was no Wyborn character in the book. Coraline had to face it all alone(aside from the cat). Fun Fact: Bobinsky wears a medal that was given to the people that had participated in the Chernobyl clean up. I recommend another stop motion movie called Paranorman.

Some of the lore and implications for the book make this so much creepier too. It's made fairly clear the cat is likely some other-worldly being similar to the other-mother who's voice somehow was directly in her mind and the gateway in the wall was something 'alive' (and breathing) so to speak that even the other-mother feared. The description implies it as being something akin to some part of some massive eldritch being. The ending when the cat disappears behind the sign even hints that his power to walk between worlds had nothing to do with the other-mother.

I don't think the cat is being hinted at as something other than a regular (maybe slightly above average intelligence) cat. Cats have always been seen as magical, showing up places out of nowhere, coming and going as they please, and generally understanding more about us and our world than they let on. The implication that *all* cats can reach this other world, and talk there, and that the other mother hates them because of this.

The other mother's finger tapping on her button eye turning into the sound of water dripping was actually a line directly from the book. It's not integral or crucial to the plot or storyline but it is one of those things that makes for a cool little detail and I'm glad they decided to keep it in ✨️✨️

The term ‘the eyes are the windows to the soul’ indicates that she traps their soul using the buttons. She has another other worldly realm, I think without time which is why she knows ahead of time that coralline was coming. She fills the doll with sand rather than cotton like the former doll as well, I think because coraline is tough/hard compared to the other girl whose personality may have been softer.

The book itself is kind of unsettling but the film is scarier than them book ever was even though the book has all stuff in it that wasn't adapted into the film. 22Tesla Yeah the movie toned down some of the visual horror compared to the book I think but still brought new horrors in like the Other Wybie having his mouth sewn shut and then into a smile, not to mention having his clothes strung up. Fun fact there's actually concept art of him hanging from the flagpole by his arms, but I guess they thought that'd be too much. Admittedly I wish they'd kept things like the Spink and Forcible spider egg sack, and the dog bats being hairless but I guess they just didn't want the movie to get panned for being too scary for kids or something lol

Such a phenomenal film! You'd be even more surprised by this. The book Coraline almost never gotten published because it was scary for younger audiences. The daughter of Gaiman's coworker read the draft and had it approved for publishing. Years later, it was revealed the daughter lied about how it wasn't scary because she wanted to know what happened next. My God without that brave kid, there would've never been a book. And no book, no fantastic movie!😲😲😲 That's the magic of suspense: Curiously hyped about what happens next.

First, why are you guys' expressions always so funny? 😭Second, I was at an animation panel when this movie came out and the described how there is only one shot in the entire movie with CGI. Even the rain drops on the window are individually animated drops of hardened glue and the entire time I was like "WHY WOULD ANYONE DO THIS TO THEMSELVES???" Thirdly, if you guys like Stop Motion I highly recommend the brand new Pinocchio movie on Netflix! it's Del Toro and despite never liking the Pinocchio story, I really fell in love with it.

Here is a cool little fact for you. There were 24 different puppets of Coraline used in the making of the movie, each one took 10 individuals and 3-4 months to construct. It was a 55-week shoot and included 109,440 individually animated frames.There were at total of 207,336 possible face combinations for Coraline with all the pieces they had. Also, the song that the other father sang to Coraline foreshadowed other mother wanting to put her button eyes on Coraline. One of my childhood favorites (I was 9 when this was released) and as a child, freaked me out, but not to a point where I had to turn it off which is what makes this movie very intriguing. Although I will say to this day 24:08 still makes me incredibly uneasy from the combo of button eyes, a mouth shaped like ghost face, and a voice that still sounds playful. Besides that, the color, animation, and sound design were 👌. And this very twisted way of doing the, "too good to be true," moral lesson felt much needed for children despite the imagery. It just felt like so much passion and effort went into this more than I can say for MOST cartoons (not exaggerating). Every Halloween I put this on for the nostalgia mostly but also cause the freaky scenes are what make me come back to it. Quality film, glad y'all reacted to it.

I'm really glad that you guys caught onto there being more going on with the parents than what we saw and the fact that it seems like they really were pretty good parents, just very stressed at the point in the film. We never get their side because we dont need to for the story, it's all Coraline's side because it's supposed to be, but if you pay much attention it's not hard to see that they are dealing with A Lot. They moved, probably at least partially to save on rent because the apartment is kinda run down and sketchy when they get there, they are clearly flat broke (a one dollar tip, theres no food in the fridge, refusing to get the gloves initially but buying them as soon as their articles sell and there is something in the bank) and trying to focus on getting their work done so that they can afford stuff. You can also tell that her mom was recently injured, because shes still wearing a neck brace, so I'm sure that's not helping any. They really do seem like loving and caring parents when they start getting their feet under them, but they're not stable for the majority of their screentime, and I see too many people calling them neglectful bad parents because of that. The Other Mother, aka the Beldam, created everything over in the other world as an idealized version of the real world specifically to impress and entice Coraline. She gave her the things she wanted so that she would want to stay, and that's why some of the other characters there are invested in helping her as much as they can. The other father was created specifically to be an ideal father to Coraline - naturally he wants to protect her and help her accomplish what's best for her, because he is a loving and supportive father who puts her needs and wants first, that's what he was made to be. Of course the other Wybie breaks her out of the mirror and helps her escape before he is killed for it, and of course he is unhappy at Coraline returning back to the Other Mother's house after the show -- he is Coraline's ideal best friend, so of course he tries to help and warn her and doesnt want to see her get hurt. It's what he was made to be. Both of them just know that if they fight any way except subtly she'll end them for it--which is ultimately the price both of them decide to pay.

Its about the loss of innocence and becoming an adult. Going through the portal/tunnel is symbolic of growing up and entering a new world of adult responsibilities and concerns. Coraline, Alice In Wonderland, Wizard of Oz, Pan's Labyrinth, Spirited Away... every generation has seen some version of this theme.

You wanna know the most terrifying part? In the books they hint at the Tunnel being more than just that. A living breathing thing. It hungers.... The otherMother or Beldam is not even the most terrifying thing, though the book's drawings are even creepier. The cat too is something of a strange being, clearly far more than a regular house cat. Btw if you want another good story check out Neil Gaiman's short story The Price it is about a black cat too. When it comes to the Laika style try Paranorman, Boxtrolls and Kubo and the two Strings too.

I used to bike past Laika's studio in Portland OR. They have since moved to Hillsboro just outside of Portland but they are still very beloved in Oregon. A few years ago they did a huge exhibition at the Portland Art Museum. It was wonderful to see all the detail and imagination of the sets. My favorite was the Coraline garden which took up a whole room. They also had the 16 ft tall Skeleton from Kubo which is the largest stop motion character ever created. I highly recommend that you watch Kubo next as it's truly amazing and beautiful plus a great storyline.

This movie is literally my all time fav. Your reactions are so real and amazing to see like,, I rarely see reaction vids where those reacting to it are genuinely focused and sucked into the film they’re watching.
