It comes down to if he thought it was more likely to score the two point and make two more touchdowns+conversions or make extra point + 2 touchdowns + field goal. Having that extra drive for a field goal is a tall order when you consider you have to stop GB an extra possession, which you haven’t been very successful at. I’d say his rant is a bit overdramatic though

To play devils advocate; if you kick the extra point you are down 17 points. That’s two touchdowns (with extra points) and a field goal to tie the game. Yes, it is still a three possession game, but it is easier than making three two point conversions. And remember, if you miss any of those three two point conversions it becomes a three score game again. If you really believe Dallas was going to make three two point conversions then going for two was the better option. If you think Dallas was going to miss one two point conversion then keeping that third score as a field goal is something you need to consider doing. Obviously McCarthy thought he wasn’t going to make that 12 yard two point conversion, so he went with plan B so that all he would need to do is kick a field goal on his final possession.

Yea I wonder what the % chance is from that distance to convert. It would take a lot of maths to statistically break down all the chances but it seems they just conceded the 3 score game at that point and you're upping your chances to successfully get what you need out of those scores later.

The only logic behind the extra point is this: If you're not confident in making the 12-yard 2 point conversion, taking and making the extra point brings up a different form of math. It's still a 3-score game but increases your odds. Making the extra point brings it to 2 touchdowns, two extra points and a field goal to reach overtime, missing the extra point is the same result as missing the 2-point conversion - needing 2 touchdowns, a field goal, an extra point, and a 2-point conversion to make overtime, barring any Packers scoring Calling up a play to work on the conversion after a penalty is objectively the worse decision, as it's much harder to convert and leaves you with math that requires you to go for MORE conversions just to TIE. Mike McCarthy was playing the low-risk probability game that comes with old school thinking, not the high-risk high-reward game that comes with newer-age thinking. Going for wins with ONE two-point conversion has bitten coaches in the ass in the past when they could have just played for OT, imagine banking on THREE of them, likely needing three DIFFERENT plays.

Failure of the 2 point conversion is an 18 point deficit which is 3 touchdowns. 17 is 2 touchdowns and a field goal. 17 over 18 points almost had no value what a dogshit mindset to have, It may be true that it's unlikely, but like he said with the onside kick comparison, it's a necessary risk that you HAVE to take to improve your odds of winning. Time is running out and with the way GB is playing, you might only get the ball back 2 times, maybe 3. This late in the game and trailing this far, you HAVE to look at possessions over points. You need to cut this to a two possession game before the 4th quarter because you might not get the ball back enough times to score the requisite points to tie it otherwise.

I have agreed with virtually 100% of these Dumb Decisions. This one is not clear to me and kicking the extra point seems maybe better. Here is why. There is still 18 mins to play in the game. Being down by 17 means they can get 2 TDs with extra points plus a FG to tie. There's enough possessions left in game to do this. If it was well into 4th quarter it's a different story though. Going for 2 at the 12 yard line is a lower probability chance of success and even if you get it, you still need two 2 point converted TDs to tie. If you assume a 2 pt conversion is a little under 50%, it's a pretty low chance anyways. Seems more likely to get a third score being a FG instead.

Attempting an extremely low probability play to net 1 point still makes the game a three score game. Missing an extremely low probability 2pt play makes it 3 TDs to win. Kicking the extra point at that distance is an extremely high probability play to make it 2 TDs and a FG to tie (aka Not losing). It was the easiest call McCarthy could make all game.

The odds of making three 2 point conversions is so slim even before one of them is from 12 yards away. When you are in that position I think you have to understand that you are just going to need four scores to come back from 24 down. The most two point conversions made in the league all season long was Cleveland with six-- you are not going to make three in one game. This kick flat out was not the problem yesterday.
