I usually go from a dumbbell curl into a hammer sort of like a super set.. It gives me a really good pump..

I try to superset curls with triceps work. I believe triceps are what makes the bicep pop. 💪

Basically , hammer curls are better if you only have dumbells. If you only have dumbbells, bicep curls are useless in comparison . If you have an ez curl bar however, bicep curls are much better. But you should still follow up with hammer curls with dumbbells . My biceps are my strong point, and since lock down I haven’t had a gym or ez curl bar. My biceps are not as big with just hammer dumbbell curls. I have trained constantly for 15-17 years and only during lock down have my biceps regressed . Ps dumbbell bicep curls are not good because ergonomically you’re not designed to lift unilateral weight in this motion. Even on a machine or with a pad. That’s why when you see body builders lifting heavy on bicep curls, they curl the weight instead of holding it in position under hand.. curling is actually acting as a hammer curl for half the rep, cheating to get it up beyond the wrists weak point. In addition , you can lift much more with hammer curls (including good form) than a good form bicep curl. While one focuses on inner and the other outer head, hammer curls do still hit both, so with the greater weight/strength aspect, are a better more efficient lift for strength and muscle development. Easier on the wrist too, a weak point / bottle neck in the lift.

You can still imitate the ez bar by holding the dumbell slightly angled, like I do, and it removed a lot of the discomfort. Hammer curls are decent for biceps but they mostly hit the brachioradialis and brachialis. My goal is to have bigger forearms and arms, I only have dumbells and I do bicep curls, hammer curls and reverse (pronated) curls. The latter really are the best to feel the brachioradialis, and the fact that I can't perform many reps when i use them as a dropset after a heavy bicep curl set clearly shows that even on those (let alone the hammer curls) the biceps is still pretty heavily engaged.

Is it ok to do dumbbell bicep curls and hammer curls in the same routine. I have also heard it's best to alternate between arm curls but I curl both arms together and I find I get a bigger burn doing my curls and hammers this way. Thanks for a great video. By the way I am 60 years old and training just to stay fit so just using light weights.

So is their a different form of curl to work the peak of the bicep without doing normal curls? I broke my ulna a few years back and everytime I do any normal curl with the bottom of my wrist pointing up I feel pain in the side of the wrist my ulna is attached to. And it’s only curls that effects my wrist. Bench, Tricep workouts, and hammer curls all don’t cause any pain in my wrist.
