Yes, when a hamster's body temperature drops significantly enough their heartbeat slows down a lot and so do their breaths. It's like suspended animation, as soon as they warm up they go back to normal :) Also in the wild they dig burrows like rabbits. So chewing through a box and then digging up to the surface would be super easy for a hamster.

Hamsters hibernate, guinea pigs don't. If you think your hamster might be hibernating, put it on a hot water bottle (or a pop bottle wrapped in t-shirt works too), make sure the water isn't too hot (if you can't stand your hand resting on it then it's too hot). The warmth will wake up a hibernating hamster, and you'll need to make sure the room its in doesn't get too cold again.

Not a doctor, but the patient. I went to the ER and told the nurse and attending that I had a blood clot in my left leg. I even pointed out where exactly it was and showed them how big I thought it was. They gave each other the "here we go" look and asked me how I could possibly know this. I informed them that I had already had 5 DVT's. They gave each other the same look again, but reluctantly ordered an ultrasound. An hour later I was being admitted for another DVT. It was exactly where I said it was and just as large as I said it was. I have had 6 more since then and have known about each one. They don't question me anymore.
