+ALBUMOF2008 Hard to imagine. Whites don't have much representation or success in rap music, do they? I have been explicitly told that there are no vacancies for a person of my ethnicity. Those are just the instances I was aware of. Every white person has experienced prejudice, because every PERSON experiences prejudice. For the way they dress, the way they speak, and these days, explicitly told "you are a fucking white male" as if this were a sufficient argument for dismissing everything you say and feel. Have you felt that kind of OVERT racism? Really? Or am I completely wasting my time trying to appeal to reason and actual specific example of life for average white people in the 21st century? The most despised group who can expect no social justice or protection when from the law when they are excluded from employment, education or just opportunities to publicly share their opinion? Do you REALLY think white people have privilege, by being 100% accountable for everything they do or even don't do, and being forced to self-censor their speech, being the only people who ARENT allowed to offend anyone? When was the last time a group of people shouted their hatred of you, and explicitly told you you are not welcome and your opinion has no value, because of your skin? Behaviour that is applauded and encouraged. No social consequence. No legal consequence. PRIVILEGE, you reckon?
@ALBUMOF20088 жыл бұрын

this isn't about JUST ASIAN AMERICANS. It's also for all minorities who get stereotypical roles. DFD obviously doesn't want to just make it about just us. I'm pretty sure every culture wants a lead role in Hollywood movies. But for DFD and the rest of asian americans, we also want to portray our people as much as you all do. if I had great writing skills I would want a diverse cast in my movies.

Totally agree. There are so many Asian Americans in america so it's about time to have a yellow movie. There are plenty of white movies, black movies are going well. I think Asian writers needs to start making their own movies, just like Tyler Perry did for black actors. (Just an example)
@JustOneMoreSecond8 жыл бұрын
For me, I don't care if they make a yellow movie. That still doesn't address the two biggest problems I have with whitewashing. 1. I want casting Asians (and all races and ethnicities) to not be a special or unique thing. If everyone in the movie is Asian, it's no better than creating a movie starring just white people or just black people. There is a mindset that Asians can only play certain roles like the nerd, the scientist, the outcast, the foreigner. Sometimes even those roles are whitewashed (check out how Venkat Kapoor became Vincent Kapoor in The Martian, effectively changing his race and his religion, or how Mindy Park went from Korean to blonde in the same movie). What's wrong with having two Asians in a movie? This shouldn't be a problem; why should having a movie populace resemble the national populace be considered a radical idea? When will people realize that only fitting in Asian actors to play stereotypes isn't the answer to diversity? Hollywood apparently doesn't even consider Asians at all; just watch Chris Rock at the counter-#OscarsSoWhite broadcast and his poor taste in Asian jokes. Sure they incorporated ONE more color, but that's still not diversity. Hollywood needs to lose the mindset that movies have to be all-white/black/yellow/brown whatever. 2. Hollywood directors have to realize that changing the inherent character is more impactful than 'creative licence'. Extreme cases could possibly even be cultural appropriation. If the role is described as being an Asian, then cast an Asian. If the role is described as being Middle Eastern, then cast someone of that heritage. Don't just cast someone completely unsuited to the role for their name or reputation. Hollywood has never been an establishment that favored or gave an equal opportunity for many races, not just Asian. Some of their early portrayals of Asians have created the stereotypes of the 'ching-chong' chinaman (Breakfast at Tiffany's) but they've done nothing to rectify this dehumanization and fetishization that they've subjected Asians to. Don't create a stereotypical character and play it off as 'cultural diversity' or 'giving the people who they want'. Hollywood has the opportunity to be the people who change views on certain races, but they adamantly refuse to do so. Somehow, casting minorities is still a radical act outside of stereotyping and novelty itemization. I don't want to see a 'yellow movie'. I want to see everyone being treated equally and justly when being cast for a role. Not chosen for name recognition, not chosen for money, but chosen because they have talent and they match the character profile.

+Joseph Hahn "for me i dont care" but leave like 80 paragraph essay lmao
@JustOneMoreSecond8 жыл бұрын
If you read past the first five words, you'll realize that I wasn't saying I don't care about the issues at hand but that I don't care for that particular approach, and then I explained why. Yes, it was lengthy -- an essay to some -- but that's because I DO care about whitewashing in Hollywood. There are some people who don't understand what this movement is about; it's not about getting more Asians into Hollywood, but more about getting people of ALL ethnicities to be fairly treated in Hollywood and destroying dehumanizing stereotypes.

"... and the only yellow men were all statues." - I used to think about this a lot as an asian american, and now I think about it all the time. :/ We're the side characters; we are Long Duck Dong in 16 Candles, or Data in the Goonies, or the unnamed scientist who's the token asian in the film. We are exotic yet acceptable, like a generic Kong Fu summer blockbuster. And this isn't even getting into that white-washing BS like in the Last Samurai. I wanna be able to see myself as a main character for once. #YellowPride

But Data was the best character in The Goonies, my dude!

you musta never watched last samurai, there was literally one good white guy and the rest were portrayed as bad, a long with the new japan government figures wanting to make deals with the new americans they just met.

Well with Watch Dogs movie becoming a thing, hopefully we can introduce more interesting and talented asian actors into more lead roles that will generate more buzz. Still think Donny Yen deserves that lead role in a major hollywood film
@bryanperritt8 жыл бұрын
"The sky is a limit, any minute now, they gonna let an asian brother get a lead role!" As an actor/comedian this hits home! Many times i've been perfect for a role, but then they tell me they're going in a "different direction" DFD holding it down for us asians out there.

I love it. I love how dumb don't give a fuck about what the public thinks of him. the song and the video's message is clear. Media needs to stop showcasing white men as superior, handsome and manly figures. The skin color boundaries need to go away and we should all learn to love and respect certain aspects of individuals.. Stereotype needs to disappear
@azam9876543218 жыл бұрын
The media doesnt hire asians as leads because theres has been no track record of them making money. This is a business after all. Also, most asian men need to be alpha in real life before they start being treated like a "manly". Stereotyping will also never disappear. we need to be realistic if we actually want to make a difference
@billychung87268 жыл бұрын
There's been no track record cause they don't get a shot at it. Also, the emasculation of asian men was a systematic process in hollywood back when it began is still happening today. Look up Yellow Peril. Also, Hollywood's first sex symbol was a japanese man, Sessue Hayakawa but was basically blacklisted because of the war with japan.

What's wrong with showcasing white men as handsome or manly?
@IsThatReallyTone8 жыл бұрын
+Billy Chung I agree with what you're saying completely but to add to your statement, let me say this. It's not only asian men that they are trying to emasculate. They are attempting to emasculate ALL men. Turn on the television and it's all you see. I have nothing against Gays, Lesbians, Transexuals, etc... Everybody is free to live how they please. What I don't feel is right it to attempt to persuade children to question their sexuality at such a long age. That's who is being targeted the hardest. What's the easiest way to strip a man of his masculinity? Take it from him when he is a child. A man who is sure of who he is and is secure of his manhood is very hard to breakdown and strip of his masculinity. However if you can convince a child that he should have been born a girl instead of a boy then that is a much of an easier task. Children are very impressionable and tend to question everything. Just wanted add to what you were saying ✌
