Dune (2021) is here! The 1984 version is the one I have the most experience with so my expectations were...on the low side. But this was a surprise! What did you think of Denis Villeneuve's "Dune"?

For Paul, I would suggest Matthew 7:15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves." Remember what Paul said in the ecological station. He wants to be emperor. Promising he could turn Arrakis green with the snap of his fingers. Paul and the hunter-seeker scene. I would suggest any number of old testament passages about witchcraft, sorcerers, oracles, divination...

Thanks for sharing your insights! I really appreciated the spiritual undertones in this movie among so many other things, and you brought those together in such a neat and concise way! When you were talking about Paul and his calling, I couldn't help but think of King David and how he was chosen by God. He was just a kid starting out, but God used him to kill giants, lead armies, and rule a nation. What a mighty God and Savior we serve! Thanks again for sharing!!

I would look at from a different Christian Perspective. The VOICE is unlocking something inside the person the the voice is being used on. If you look closely when Paul uses the VOICE on his mother Lady Jessica. You see Paul saying something without sound, then you hear the special effects voice. I'm suggesting the special effects voice is happening inside of Lady Jessica. Something to consider is Proverbs 31 and Lady Jessica struggle between her family and the Bene Gesserit. In the 'thopter the Harkonnen men fall to greed and lust. Proverbs 6:25 Do not desire her beauty in your heart, and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes. With Paul and Lady Jessica unlocking greed and lust. Then the fight with Jamis. Proverbs 15:18 A hothead stirs up a fight, but one who holds his temper calms disputes.

Thanks Durban! I watched it on HBOMax last night and enjoyed it. I read the first couple books in high school (took me three tries to get into book one :) so I don't think you're alone in hitting a wall with the book) and saw the Sci Fi miniseries (my dad was really into Dune) and never saw the '84 Dune. I'll probably watch this again this weekend. I really enjoyed the atmosphere and music. I had half-remembered bits of plot so part of the fun was trying to remember what was coming next. I think it was really well-cast; I enjoyed everyone's performances in their roles.

Just saw it today. It was fantastic! Loved the music and how I got sucked into it. Fear is the mind killer. If you let it fear will stop you from doing anything. God is with us wherever we go.

I highly recommend watching the SciFi channel’s miniseries of Dune. The Dune series is the author’s version of the Messiah of both the Jews and Islam in the far future. The book Dune Messiah takes place long after Paul. The 1984 version’s producer didn’t fully understand “the voice” and assumed it was a trigger for a special type of gun.

This was epic in so many ways. Adapting a book to the screen, particularly a book as complex as Dune, is no easy feat. Yet Villeneuve has somehow made it look easy. It was a wise decision to split up this story over several films, giving the story the breathing room it needs. The only quibble I have with this is that Jessica's character does not seem to be as powerful a Bene Gesserit as she is in the book; perhaps this aspect of her character will be more fully explored in the next film(s). And the gender-bending of Dr. Kynes is irritating to me. I don't have a problem with strong female characters, but Herbert conceived Kynes as a man. He's no longer around to ask if he has any qualms with this sort of alteration. But, really this is a minor nit I'm picking. Great film, and truly big screen-worthy - I saw it in IMAX and was blown away.

I loved the movie! Having seen all of Paul's visions though it was disconcerting to see Jamis die at the end. My mind blew up thinking about the fact that Paul knew him as a friend, experienced teaching from him. But that was not the future nor the past but rather a time that was not to be...but was.

Its ok, everything you need to know about the story is not in the film. That is why it is a part 1.You will learn more in the next movie and then look back on this one and maybe rate it higher. I know the books so had the opposite problem. I needed to watch the film a few times to stop thinking back to the book and watch it as it I knew nothing and then I really enjoyed it more and appreciated the spectacle and performances in a new light, closer to someone fresh to the story. Then and only then would I think of raising the score to an A.

I am a book reader so I do know a bit about what is going on. Trying to avoid spoilers, Paul is way more complex. The problem is the Bene Gesserit were setting up and preparing for something but, Paul, as stated, is not exactly what they wanted. And worse, he come absolutely not when they wanted him. If you realize, they wanted a girl instead of Paul. And this was a lot also because of politics. So...they had all those plans and then Jessica seriously messed them and turned them upside down by conceiving Paul out of place and out of order. Now, they still understand Paul has potential. So they do not want to just destroy Paul. This is why they are going to try and set Paul on their pre built path. But always have in mind the path was not for Paul. Last, did the path ever considered for the Fremen to be liberated? Highly unlikely! The Bene Gesserit were and are more like using the Fremen and not very concerned with their own needs. So, basically, understanding the importance of Dune, they have estimated correctly that the Fremen would one day be pivotal for anyone of great importance who should come. And therefore, they prepared the way for the Fremen to recognize this guy who would be born from a Bene Gesserit ;) Paul seems to fit all Fremen prophecies. Yes, he does! Mainly because he is incredibly close to what the Bene Gesserit were planning for. He is the son of one of them, he is heir to a great house, he is trained in Bene Gesserit ways. So, everything with Paul is going to fit. Now....given that Paul is not exactly what was planned, I am not going to tell you what he is going to become. What you can already realize is that, yes, Paul has powers. He does indeed has potential to go one step further on the Bene Gesserit ways. Is that the supreme being they were looking for? We will have to see. Paul is no doubt special. He no doubt inherits incredible powers and genetics. But is he THE ONE? And how will he really join with the Fremen? What role will he play and what results will it have to the Fremen? I could tell you but avoiding spoilers for now

Something else I may expand. It was hinted in the movie that Jessica is special too. The reverend mother hinted that Paul has many birth rights because he is a son of Jessica. It can be said Jessica´s bloodline / genetics was one of the most important already, if not the most important one for the Bene Gesserit. This is expanded further in the books and the movies may bring further details in the future. But Jessica´s blood / genetics was already huge by herself. Jessica having a baby with the duke was something which was exactly what the Bene Gesserit wanted and that was one of their best bets as for the genetics which would lead to the "supreme mind". They just wanted her to have only daughters ;) The importance behind all these genetics is key. In the books, the navigators guild is somewhat aware that Paul may be able to tap into greater powers. The Bene Gesserit are also aware and trying to play with it. At the start of the story, they do not see Paul as "supreme mind". But they do see him as one step further in that direction. The conversation in the movie was quite good. The reverend mother told Jessica that they are playing a game of centuries. And that they are already planning for options. This gets even more interesting when you find out a bit later in the movie that Jessica is pregnant again. So, even within Jessica´s bloodline, there is another baby soon to arrive. Jessica´s new baby is incredibly interesting too. Because, once more, you need to realize Jessica is turning everything upside down. She is pretty much doing stuff out of emotions and outside any carefully conceived plan. Jessica´s emotions are the real WILDCARD that is throwing the whole Bene Gesserit all over the place ;)

As someone who is gifted in the prophetic and discernment (completely all God and not me, complete reliance on Jesus) If I pay attention he shows me stuff. Now I'm a massive sci-fi fan! I love intellectual, post apocalyptic, survival movies. DUNE, I will not recommend to anyone and expecially Christians. This film is all kinds of wrong. In my experience, praying against people's illnesses, torments and spiritual battles, literally doing exerosims deliverances, God has now showed me not to open any window, portal or allow any footstool to the enemy! Hollywood and media have an agenda and that the ruler of this worlds system is the devil. Just because its popular doesn't mean its good. Often that's a red flag. How can the "Messiah" have demonic powers involving brutlistic ristuals that are cruel and twisted. Honey its giving its giving occult, its giving wich craft and dark magic. Its giving satanism and demonic. Its giving Paul is the anticrhsit providing momentary peace before its revealed that he is what he is. The ways of the Kingdom are opposite. We are in the last days people we can't be playing around no more, play time is over. The Lord is calling out uncompromising Christians. In Grace and truth and the full ways of the Lord. They will be the overcomers. Those who gain the world will lose their life and those who lose their life will gain it. Matthew 10:39, Matthew 7:13-14 Isaiah 5:20

I just saw it with my sister last night, and I give it a more 3/5. The opening was slow moving, but it kept my interest. The middle was where everything started to pick up. But the ending just seemed to drag, but the time they had escaped the worm,I was close to yelling in the theater “JUST END!!!” The visuals were breathtaking, that would be the only reason why I would tell people to see it theaters, just to see how big this movie was The cast was awesome,I think Oscar Isaacs was the stand out in my opinion. The action sequences were very,I’m so glad they’re weren’t close ups or shaky cams. The unfortunately for me,the story is where it fell a little flat for me,cause by the time we had walked out of the theater,we were so confused as to what had just happened. But I did enjoy it,and probably wouldn’t watch it again until the sequel came out, that is if they greenlight it. I also appreciate how you turn your reviews into little devotionals, that’s a real bonus.

I agree with you that this Dune was not as odd as the 1980s version. I also like the idea that instead of putting the entire story in one movie, they are planning a sequel! Unlike you, I always liked the weirdness of the 1984 version, but never liked the “grossness” of it i.e. bad guy skin disease. Glad this bad guy wasn’t that gross.

If you are actually looking for a Christian prospective to tell you if it’s safe to watch don’t listen to this man because he’s already got stuff behind him I can see are bad first of all marvel is a pretty bad place for Christians because it opens doors and they are all about magic granted iron man is ok the first ant man and a few others because it’s just a suit however others that are witches, magical or even a mutation is demonic. Now this man has watched a movie that I’m pretty sure is demonic and he’s taking a message from it and relating it to Christianity views but that is COMPLETELY wrong god does not use the demonic to show himself or tell us something because that compromising and is deception it opens doors so why would god use it ?????? If you know god you know that’s true
