@@David-nd4to No, actually not. Only if you played the old Dune games, but in the books the symbol of Atreides is a red hawk on a green-black background, and the Duke wears a red ring (but not in the movie). The symbol of Harkonnens is a blue griffin on an orange background, sometimes a ram or a ram-headed griffin or both. So the main Atreides color is red followed by green and black, and the main Harkonnen color is blue followed by orange and white.

That second of hesitation before the Baron activates the shield is PEAK characterization. He has his enemy at his mercy, but is still suspicious enough to take the precautions that end up saving his life for the thinnest margin. I loved the scene in the book and the film portrayal couldn't be more flawless. Baron Harkonnen might be cartoonishly evil, but he's no fool.

One thing in the book that doesn’t come out in the film in my opinion is how this act could well have saved Paul’s life. The book makes much more emphasis on the Baron’s mentat being formidable and a spice user, he’s the one that plans the invasion and correctly predicts the path it will take. If he’d survived then I think he may well have inferred Paul’s survival and hunted him. Leto’s sacrifice here kills the mentat in the books and ensures Paul can develop into the Fremen leader while the Harkonen’s miss the signs and continue to believe he’s dead.

I think the reason is that when Herbert realized just how exceptionnaly deadly he made the Harkonnen twisted mentat (who is both a master-strategist AND a master-assassin for house Harkonnen), he had to kill him early. Leto sensed memories rolling in his mind--the old toothless mutterings of hags. The room, the table, the Baron, a pair of terrified eyes--blue within blue, the eyes--all compressed around him in ruined symmetry. There was a man with a boot-toe chin, a toy man falling. The toy man had a broken nose slanted to the left: an offbeat metronome caught forever at the start of an upward stroke. Leto heard the crash of crockery--so distant--a roaring in his ears. His mind was a bin without end, catching everything. Everything that had ever been: every shout, every whisper, every . . . silence. One thought remained to him. Leto saw it in formless light on rays of black: The day the flesh shapes and the flesh the day shapes. The thought struck him with a sense of fullness he knew he could never explain. Silence.

Many scenes with the Baron struck me as funny in the book. He makes it out of the room alive in the book and is in a moment of shock wondering if he breathed any of it in. Then suddenly the Sardaukar come around the corner and demand to see the Dukes body. The Baron realizes that he cannot spin the story, the room is full of dead people, there is food on the table, signs of panic, things knocked over... It will be obvious that they were completely caught off guard and he likely barely made it out alive. Word will get back to the emperor and he'll look incompetent. Despite nearly dying this is the first thing he thinks of.

seems crazy that House Atreides has only 2 actual blood Atreides alive at this time after ruling Caladan for over 10,000 years. if we look at our own history of medieval houses in Europe they have tons of blood relatives even after only ruling for a few generations, there shoudl be hundreds if not thousands of blood relatives of Atreides, many of them probably close relatives to Paul.

I thought about that too, and I guess that more distant relatives just don't really have a claim to rule in this universe? I suppose a such a relative could be given control of the house by imperial decree, but as we know, the Emperor is a massive knob and he would never do that. Also, we can be fairly sure that Leto is an only child. If he had uncles, those would presumably be allowed to stay on Caladan and keep that Atreides name, but any aunts of his would have been married off to other houses and their children would no longer have a claim to the house. We know for certain that cousins don't really count, since technically, Leto is Vladimir Harkonnen's cousin (not sure how distant though) and neither has any claim to the other's house. Weird thing is, Leto is also the Emperor's cousin, and it is stated that that is part of the reason the Emperor wants him dead, because with his popularity, Leto could technically lay claim to the throne, since he is descended from a former emperor. So yeah, it's not really clear, but I guess it's technically possible for Leto to not have any relatives to speak of apart from Paul and the Emperor if the Atreides dukes before him all had just one son each and married the daughters off-world.

@@faykanundol well house atreides did come from an oceanic planet. Obviously the numenorian heritage vs atredies heritage is different. @faykanundol
@faykanundol 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnwhittaker1409 On no I perfectly agree that Leto was referring to House Atreides when he said I, although the debate on whether he meant his family surviving, or the legacy of his House enduring even their own destruction is left to debate. Chiefly I was referring to the difference in tone between the two sayings, for Elendil it was somber, almost sorrowful as they had just left the peak of mankind's civilization, brought to ruin by their own folly, whereas Leto says it defiantly, I would guess, as though getting one last dig at the Baron before committing to the act that he hopes would kill his enemy as well. Therefore, thematically they are aligned, but the meaning is not exactly the same because of context.

He couldn't deny a decree from the Emperor and in accepting this trap always knew the Emperor's knife was coming for him, his assassination was always known to be unavoidable. Instead his plan was when his death comes his son would with the assistance of the Fremen reassert their dominance and many times told Paul to take advantage of the Fremen's superstition of him. The Duke's mistake was he thought he had far more time to solidify these plans. Still mostly worked out in the end!

@@mistermeow527 In the book, Duke Leto also thought that he could defeat the Harkonnen/Sardaukar attack as well, but the scale was many times greater than he was expecting. Something like 50x greater. The Harkonnens spent almost their entire profits from 80 years of controlling Arrakis to transport that overwhelming force AND the Sardaukar Legion that assisted them (The Emperor was a cheapskate). The Duke also had a suicide attack on Geidi Prime that also erased almost the entire remaining stockpile of spice the Harkonnens had stored as well. It was the Emperor's plan to remove or weaken both. He destroyed House Atreides and severely weakened House Harkonnen. In all honesty, Saddam should have had Irulan marry Paul, enticing a potential rival to being part of the Royal family directly and thereby maintaining his rule. And yes, the Duke was not expecting the attack to be so soon. He had planned for more time to train more of his troops to Sardaukar/Fremen standard, instead he only had a small force of such people while the rest were decent but not Sardaukar/Fremen level yet.

It's interesting how they altered the name Harkonnen. The name originally was Härkönen, the author found it in a phone book and thought it sounded Soviet, it isn't, it's Finnish. The name was later altered to Harkonnen, if it had been altered to Harkkonen or Harkonen it would have still sounded kinda Finnish. Härkönen is an old Eastern Finnish name and can be traced all the way back to 1500s. There are also many places in Finland called Härkälä, Härkölä or Härkönen. In Finland place names and last names are often related as people would be called what they live near (for example Koivula, koivu=birch, so the person might have lived next to a birch grove) and regardless of gender would take the family estates name as their own when they married. In Finland names are often related to nature, and the name Härkönen comes from härkä, which means a bull. Härkönen is an Eastern Finnish last name, because of the the -nen ending which is a masculine suffix, the equivalent for actor and actress but masculine ( -tar is the feminine counterpart). So if in fact the last name was attached to an estate, then the estate would have been called Härkälä or Härkölä, and all male members of the family (even the ones who married into it) would have been Härkönen and all female members would have been Härkätar. However, around 1800-1900s the -tar started to be used less and less as Finland started to copy Central Europe, and in 1920 when last names became mandatory by law, a uniform last name practice was adopted through the whole country and the gendered suffixes were dropped. Härkönen is still a last name in Finland, but Härkötär isn't. In 1930 it became required by law for women to take their husband's last name, before that the most common practice was for everyone to keep their own last name when they married. The -la ending basically means the place has that particular thing in it. Café= kahvila, kahvi=coffee so kahvila is a place to get coffee. Pesula=laundromat, pesu=wash, so a pesula is a place to get washing done. Car-wash=autopesula auto= car, pesu=wash, so it's a place for car washing. Restaurant=ravintola, ravinto=nutrition, so a restaurant is place to get nutrition.
