So true! Also the Gom Jabbar scene where she's standing outside the door whimpering... I totally believe her portrayal of a mother who is sending her own son into what potentially could be his doom, and while she's confident in Paul's competence, she can't help but be terrified of losing him like any mother would. She's trained in all the Bene Gesserit jazz and yet her motherly instincts challenge her resistance of fear. This inner conflict of a mother-Bene Gesserit makes her character so interesting, and she really nails it!

man, this scene... i remember when i left the theatre i was asking myself if i had this much sympathy for paul while reading the book, not that i didn't like him but i didn't feel this much for him at least. now looking back at this scene i think it all makes sense. you just can't help but feel sorry for this poor boy who was burdened with a horrifying future AND the skill of seeing it, at such a young age. kudos to timothée chalamet's brilliant acting and denis villeneuve's vision for the portrayal of his character. you really can see paul's raw pain and horror. wow.

also a few more reasons why i love this scene so much 1) how he snaps back from his hysteria when he sees chani calling his name, just like how chani will always calm him down in the future as well 2) paul calling himself a 'freak' istead of being impressed by the potential political power he has in his hands 3) him SO RIGHTFULLY holding his mother and bene gesserits accountable for the disaster that's about to happen to him, lady jessica did him so wrong
@IneaFaedyn
@IneaFaedyn 8 ай бұрын
In the book, it's more subtle. If you're in a cynical mindset, Paul kind of just comes off like an emotionless psychopath in this part. He spends alot of the time stuck on thinking "I should be grieving my father, but I cant make myself care, its so weird" and all the comments with his mom are just him being annoyed at how "slow and stupid" she was being, because he didn't realize that he was just becoming fast and smart. In reality, he was wildly traumatized and didn't have a way to cope with the changes. His mother couldn't protect him anymore and he was finding it unsettling and confusing that he had to rely on himself more than her now.
@Douio
@Douio 3 ай бұрын
@@IneaFaedyn the kid is terrified what is to become. He loved his father and his mother never wanted this for him. In this scene they show just how much pressure this building onto both of them. And after seeing the second film Paul has every right to be upset and his mother had every right to be worried. They cherished their emotions while they still had them.

Mmm no thats really not how it is in the book either. I just finished the book for the 1st time. Although this scene was different in the book. In the tent book scene, Paul was still very much afraid of a holy war and was actively trying to suppress this bloody future. He keeps whispering “I cannot let that happen” in reference to his visions. Only towards the end of that scene does he tentatively accept who he will eventually become and mourns his father. I think the movie did a great job with this moment.

This scene was so well executed! Paul's entire character arc throughout the books was indeed exhaustive, and he did indeed become tyrannical with power after his "awakening," but I still get goosebumps when I realize that he could've killed his Mother in this moment and was just beginning to realize his power. Even her years of training were useless. The images of the future were just a precursor for the bloodshed he'd be responsible for.
@ImTheMan0fSteel
@ImTheMan0fSteel Жыл бұрын
Its a little more complicated than that to be fair. The system they were campaigning against itself was tyrannical. Paul DID become a tyrant. But almost accidentally in the sense of, because he got so powerful it was kind of inevitable. Like god. If you are all powerful you simply cannot be all good.
@nfindc
@nfindc 11 ай бұрын
@ImTheMan0fSteel You're right. There is more to Paul's tyrannical rule than what I eluded to. The thing is, he saw what was coming, but couldn't prevent the inevitable. I would've been horrified as well if I were to see nothing but death and violence in the wake of my future as the leader of the House of Atreides.

@Biggiiful
@Biggiiful 2 жыл бұрын
I think the 2nd part will bring out a much more personal side to both Paul and Jessica that there really wasn't a lot of time for in the first part. The first movie had to do alot of introductions of the different factions, planets, and houses. It had to show the move from Caladan to Arrakis and the Atraides getting introduced to their new planet. The 2nd half really only has to introduce the Emperor and Princess and Feyd. And other than the ending battle, the rest of the film's time will mostly be spent with Paul, Jessica and the Fremen. Lots of time to delve into their characters more.

I’m of the same opinion. He seemed so antisocial, focused, modest, professional, royal. I wonder if it was done intentionally because of how he was raised. @@jgyoutube763 bro i know what involuntary means. you're gonna involuntarily wet the bed tonight. unless its voluntary if you're into that I dont judge. anyway yes I think to a degree it was involuntary. you can see at other points in the movie paul has to attune his use of the voice, i.e. he has to focus and gather himself before using it. he closes his eyes and meditates for a brief moment before he attempts it. It also often doesnt come through as full or persuasive as his moms does, except for this occasion. his mom also is a reverend mother, if anyone can resist the voice it'd be her, but paul snapped and barked a command at her so quickly and powerful that it was irresistible. He was just too quick and it was too strong for it to have been intentional, and at that, paul isn't the type to use the voice to get the upper hand in a familial argument.
@jgyoutube763
@jgyoutube763 2 жыл бұрын
@@bobbm1 fair points. And just to clarify, I only asked if you knew what involuntary meant because I didn’t understand your response to my question completely. What does him being muad’dib have to do with anything? Hypothetically speaking anyone who knows how to use the voice can instinctively/naturally use it without consciously acting on it. It’s not exclusive to the sisterhood or Paul. So I thought you meant to say voluntary and got the words mixed up. It happens.
