Interesting the different vibe she gives Kynes compared to Max Von Sydow in Lynch's movie. Von Sydow's somewhat stiff and proper Kynes very much initially makes you aware that he is an employee of the Emperor, making you not sure whether to trust him, something the Atreides feel. Duncan-Brewster's performance is much more relaxed in a way that makes it apparent that she has become more fremen than Imperial even before you learn much more about her. What I love about this is you can read it in such different ways. Maybe he is The One and just innately knows their ways.... or maybe he's had some many visions of Fremen in stillsuits at this point, that he just subconsciously picked up how they wear their stillsuits and copied it. Dune's take on the falsity of prophecy is fascinating.
@machdude3366 Жыл бұрын
It's not really a fake prophet, but instilled propaganda. The Bene Gesserit already know the context of their power and what the end goal is. They built the religion of the Fremen on the existence of a savior that is literally the KH. Paul played into it well because his powers would have already preempted him to going to Arrakis and given him tools needed to survive. The Fremen on the other side have been conditioned on generations to believe that what he sees and represents is their salvation. The ambiguity is in whether or not he his role was that of a savior or a destroyer. Not even the Bene Gesserit knew much of the golden path and even Paul was shaken at the notion that this wasn't just a future, but an inevitability.

@machdude3366 Жыл бұрын
@@razorburn645 The Harkonnens weren't bad, but man for man, they weren't a match for the Atreides. At the time of the first book, the Atreides were becoming a very threatening fighting force and their prowess was said to be comparable to the Sardaukar at the time. As a result, the Harkonnens were not going to do very well to begin with and it would not have given the Baron a return on investment. His decision to pay for the entire army's transportation and the recruitment of the Sardaukar was one born out of pragmatism; he was leaving nothing to chance and knew that as good as the Atreides were, outnumbering them with Sardaukar all but guaranteed their victory. That's sort of the point of the over-arching subplot of the story: the Bene Gesserit seeded legends into various cultures around the Imperium, so that they'd be so ingrained in the race memory that they wouldn't be questioned when the time came to use them later. Kynes is possibly one of the most educated and aware members of the Fremen, and even she/he took this 'sign' as a possible omen. The beauty of the 'sign' is that it can equally be accepted or dismissed to the advantage of the messiah-archetype user. If Paul wears his suit the right way, it lends credence to the growing mystique surrounding him; if Paul doesn't understand that Jamis' challenge is to the death, it's dismissed with a gesture. It's like the soft-reading of a charlatan psychic: so long as you make your predictions unfalsifiably vague, most people who've been primed to believe the myth will accept it, or at the very least won't aggressively reject it.

I wonder if fitting the boots slip-fashion causes the wearer to make extra effort while wearing it? So the Duke fitted his stillsuit for comfort and ease of movement, while Paul fitted his suit for survival. Paul's reference to it seeming the right way meant he did this unconsciously. For example if the walking provides the pumping action, then setting the boots to slip fashion could maximize the pumping action while making each step require more effort. If the pumping action is necessary (i.e. in the desert), then setting them to slip-fashion would be necessary. Sietch Fremen would likely keep their boots slip-fashion because if they are in a milder environment then the extra effort while walking is not an issue, while if they are in the desert they are already prepared. Village Fremen might shift between the two as they have more access to a milder environment due to living in a village.

Paul is always giving off signs hes the Lisan al Gaib. It must be so crazy for the Fremen to see their prophecies unfolding. That woman who cried in front of Jessica, the one who gave her the Crysknife really freaked out. Awesome stuff.
@toddkes58903 ай бұрын
The prophecies were set up by BG millenia earlier. Jessica was using her knowledge of different religions and markers in them to give key words to get the right reactions, and if Mapes had let Jessica talk longer then Mapes would have noticed the errors. For example Jessica was about to describe the crysknife as a 'maker of death', but Mapes cries out after the word 'maker'. That clues Jessica that it is the word 'maker' that is important. Jessica then asks Mapes if Mapes doubted that Jessica would not know of the Maker. Jessica is bluffing, but Mapes is too deep in the planted superstition to realize. As to Lisan Al Gaib, it is just referring to a son of a BG. If the situation is safe for the BG, then she can say something about it not being time yet. If the BG absolutely needs to survive, then she can work within the superstition to survive. If the BG has a daughter only then she can adapt based on if she needs help, and hint that the daughter is the one who might bear the Lisan al Gaib.

The fierce intellect of Dr Keynes was missed out from the movie that was featured in the books. The dinner party between the Atreides family and royal visitors. In the book Dr Keynes (a man) had a very good storyline despite its shortness. Paul noted how intelligent n acrobatic in an argument he could be and its a shame that it wasnt added to the movie as it would have added alot more of a background to the Fremen and the posh culture like Atreides in their differences and the Atreides literal urge to know more about the Fremen as a people and the planet itself. This was one of, if not *the* weakest scene adaptation from the book. In the book they highlight that the suit needs to be skintight and specifically tightened in certain areas to preserve water, which is unnatural for non-Fremen people to do when they wear it. It's implied that nobody would know how to properly wear the suit without direct instruction. So when Paul shows up with a perfectly worn suit it's extra noteworthy. All they had to do in this scene was even just show a few additional strap adjustments and positioning to make it perfect on the characters other than Paul, but they instead just said "oh hey you tucked your boots in properly" and were blown away by that.
@pseudonymousbeing9875 ай бұрын
That was fully communicated. Gurney and Leto needed adjustments all the way around their bodies, Liet knew and expected this. Meanwhile she takes one glance at Paul and can tell instantly he somehow knew what he was doing, and does not need adjustment. That's perfect text to visual adaptation. Actions speak just the same as words. No need for exposition, just action and meaning.
