I think God Emperor is an underappreciated masterpiece. Herbert was extremely ambitious in writing this with a central character who had had their humanity almost completely corrupted and destroyed, and to still make Leto sympathetic. How do you write for a character that doesn't think in human terms? Herbert did this on more than this occasion, actually.

But Leto *needed* the Ixians to be treacherous. It was one of the contradictions that made the Golden Path seem so nonsensical to everyone else. Leto needed them to develop the no-chambers and no-ships that would be crucial to the Scattering. The millennia-old dogma of the Butlerian Jihad had halted technological progress. Worst of all, it had enabled the Guild's monopoly on space travel, which *had* to be broken in order for humanity to spread throughout the universe. Ixian no-ships, with their navigation machines, were the key to the Golden Path.

I've recently been debating Dune lore on KZbin. The commandment against thinking machines did nothing to stop their secret development and encouraged the creation of other factions just as dangerous. The Jihad and great scattering might have killed more people than the machine war. The only brightside is the creation of the ultimate kwizatz haderach but, that just means that humanity is under the protection of an even more powerful god emperor. Duncan's sacrifice is even greater than Leto II's and he didn't volunteer for it.

I used to have a strong mental image of The God Emperor, a powerful figure with a knowing confidence in all things, like a Hindu deity, tranquil and omniscient. The way you narrate him has recast him in an incredible way, I can't shake the feeling of him skulking, craven, paranoid, old. Damn you, you used the Voice on me! Also, I'm sure there are no pictures of it and I can't remember the exact lines that made me think it, but I always imagined Moneo looking something like a Sikh. For those who question Leto's death. His death is the the plan of the golden path. Proof of this when he commanded "follow her orders even if she order you to kill me." The whole path is described in the book. It not in one statement, but through out the book. First he take skin of the worm to preserve them, through the changes to dune to control the spice completely. Thus the universe. He created a human who could not be seen by prescient. His death aloud worm comeback to dune and make a desert again. With his death would cause the scattering. So yes he knew the time and how he was going to die. It just had to play out. Malky saw what Leto's subject didn't see despite him being the God emperor and the living embodiment of a sand worm. Leto the II is still a human being with the human need for companionship. Historically many sovereigns from despotic rulers to kings all have friends who are not their usual sycophant subjects. Despite having people who worship or fear them the need to be treated like a normal person cannot be simply suppressed unless you are a total narcissist. To simply put it Malky engaged Leto like another person instead of a zealot. Even Paul Atreides once yearned to be able to walk amongst the Fremen as Usul instead of their mahdi.

That's why I think that he fell in love with someone like Hwi Noree, attractive of course, but also friendly and warm, naturally prety and Smart girl. The ixians would never have created someone like Lady Margot Fenrring or princess Irulan Corrino, with a hidden agenda an a perfectly measured and studied behavior. That's the style of the Bene Gesserit sisterhood and it would never have worked with the god emperor.
@MackeyDeez6 жыл бұрын
@@zannaifacedancer5915 I guess the Ixians figured out that if a man like Malky with his charm and intellect could earn a special liking by the God Emperor Leto II then a woman of charm and intellect could be able to woo him. It's a very clever stratagem on the Ixians part cause Hwi Noree if successful then the Ixians could end up being the power behind the thrown by proxy of Leto II and he wouldn't even suspect that his rule has been subverted. In a way it's what the Bene Gesserits tried to do breed a Kwitzat haderach that they can control.
@zannaifacedancer59156 жыл бұрын
Anyone could not carry out such a purpose like that. The plan began to work since the first meeting between Leto and Hwi Noree. But while the emperor did not suspect the trap at first, I have the feeling that he understood the intentions of the new ixian ambasador, or I think I remember that Hwe told him so. I agree with you, it seems that the ixians appropriated the Bene Gesserit axiom that stars like this: "Power is used very gently. The sisters are experts exercising power without anyone knowing and the ixian strategy seems to be teres. The strategy, but not the actress. That's my opinión, she was not an actress, Leto would not have been impressed by a seductive and powerful Reverend Mother. He ruled the known universe and was totally prescient, there could be some trick of the sisterhood that hi didn't know? Physical beauty was not enough to demonstrate his weakness. Malky and Hwi pade with their lives, but the plan triumphed in a way because of her natural charm.

Good video as usual, except for one glaring flaw. As the novel opens, it's Iyo Kobat who is Ixian Ambassador to Arrakis. He is dismissed in shame early on due to his involvement in smuggling a lasgun to the previous Duncan Idaho, thus contributing to Idaho's foiled assassination attempt on the God Emperor. His dismissal paves the way for Hwi Noree to become new ambassador. Malky had been recalled to Ix long before. Remember, he's the one responsible for creating and breeding Hwi; he's the one responsible for her careful training and grooming; he's the one plotting Leto's demise in the background. How could he do this if he were still on Dune?

In spite of everything, an agonizing death from Moneo's throat punch was detestable. Did Frank Herbert offer any evidence that Malky understood the Golden Path? I'm not sure that he did. The Ixians were behaving as other power groups in the Imperium were: ie, chafing under Leto's multi-millenial tyrrany while, simultaneously, seeking to increase their Decenial spice allotments through abject service to him. The fact that Malky was NOT worshipful - that he recognized and enjoyed the most HUMAN of Leto's accomplishments (eg, characterizing Leto as a "master conversationalist") makes a refreshing contrast to Moneo's cloying dutifulness. Later on in God Emperor, Leto must've felt pleasure when he revealed to Hwi that he was actually "Noah Arkwright" - the author of celebrated books enjoyed by billions of children (of which she had been one.) Thank you, Ideas of Ice & Fire, for doing justice to one of the most enjoyable and intriguing characters in DUNE: Malky, Honorable Ambassador from Ix.
@Gigas01014 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the year-late reply but I feel that it may have been more than a throat-punch. Malky was brought in wounded and in need of medical attention. I feel that he was going to die regardless of the throat punch, that was probably just to stop him from talking. The real death was being thrown off the balcony to the sands below. That's just my interpretation, though. One of the things I love about Dune is how much of it is open to interpretation, despite the messages of the books being so concrete yet crystal clear. Your points on Moneo and Malky's contrast were something I hadn't considered, thanks for adding to my next rereading of God Emperor.

Personally, I think malky may have come close to seeing the golden path, or at least understanding that leto had a reason for being beyond just being a tyrant. I still think that Leto II knew of his demise and let it happen as it was the best way to continue the Golden Path and to led to the best solution in the face of kralizec (possibly against AI) - still however, the fact that Duncan remains a strong character and is key to in one way or another in each book (as far as I read, currently nearing the end of Chapter House). He knew that this was the only way and the best way, Leto II knew this and the Bene Gesserit I dare say realised it too (later rather than sooner).

Perhaps one reason why they seem so familiar to me is the fact “Malky” was the name of a character in the movie “Leon.” Malky was the No. 2 to Stansfield, a drugged up detective who had a near unnatural ability to predict the future and figure out other people’s movements and motives...except his own death. He was the medium between a man addicted to money and power and the real world. When he died, everything unraveled and Stansfield ultimately set in a path to his death. And the only record of Stansfield’s deeds are the mind of a young girl, who will most likely need decades before anyone believes the stories. Oh well, silly observation for the night. Thank you!

I'm not able to see him like that and I don't think you eithher. That is the image taht all tyrants have of themselves. Maybe his vulnerability makes us feel something close to compassion, (not much), that is understandable.
@zannaifacedancer59156 жыл бұрын
Of course it was his choice, that's cristal clear. He never saw himself as a victim, but I ment that he saw himself as someone missunderstood. Do you really think that he was a teacher? Well, mankind is so stupid as not tu understand his lesson. They were not able to understand that his only purpose was to sabe them from disaster. As a strict but loving ffather who has big plans for his children even before they know it, and he is forced to correct his children so that they don't mistake the course. That's exactly how the tyrants see themselves. The only difference is that Leto was blessed, or cursed, with total prescience and knowledge. If the Golden pat was so necessary, why did Paul reject the prophecy? Why Leto's peace was disturbed by occasional rebellions that were crushed with no mercy by the Fish Speakers? Why did he create the F S? If saving mankind was so important to him why didn't he Warn people about kralizec? Famine times, the scattering, the Honored matres and the destruction of some many planets, are they just steps on the Golden path or consequences of failure? I eternally bless Malky and Hwi because I don't know what would have happened without their diabolical intervention. Frank warned us against the messianic leaders and the kindness and altruism of the Atreides died with Duke Leto.

I've always wondered since The God Emperor was only vulnerable to water...why did someone not try to spit at him or use a water gun ect...maybe covering their thoughts with a no machine or something...hmm well its a thought at least.

Yeah. I can see the resemblance - especially around the eyebrows.

Hi Quinn, This question might have come at a late time but I hope you'll see and answer it: Why didn't Leto just eliminate the Ixians or whoever created (or triggered) The Great Enemy? I didn't read the books so I don't know exactly what the God emperor was capable of! Thanks

Malky is in this book so little, but he is more or less the main antagonist. I think this is what it looks like when your big bad is physically weak but incredibly good at attacking the heart of the ..'protag'. ( Though in my opinion, Duncan is the true Protagonist. )

God could not have foreseen his own death, even if he had wanted to, since it was Siona who pulled the trigger: she is God's genetic product, invisible to prescience, even his own!

I believe Malky and Whi were merely the equivalent of the Super Being breeding program but it was established by the Ixians. In the God Emperor's universe the goal of this Super Being was to woo and ultimately undermine the will of the God Emperor. Like the Bene Gesserit IT did something they had not planned. I also believe Malky fit Leto's explanation of the predator. Malky never hated Leto as Leto didn't hate Malky. They were both students, companions and Prey.

Very difficult to understand the true nature of Malky, i know that is you favorite Novel, which is not mine as my favorite is Children of Dune but Emperor God of Dune comes hence in the second position, Following your top 5, I reread this week this Novel and still don't understand the Malky's place and why LEto II has killed him , Brian should write a novel on him !

I think it's more like he knew his role was in the end insignificant. He is brilliant enough to know that as brilliant as he is, he is an ant next to Leto II. So he just has fun with his role, and Leto II seems charmed by this.

So...why did Hwi Noree sleep with Duncan? Made no sense. Wasn't her heart set on the God Emperor? She cheated on God. Pretty random and annoying. Really bothered me when I read it. And no one ever seems to address it in reviews or lore analysis.

Star Wars was purposefully dumb down for the masses. Lucas admitted as much so lets stop comparing Star Wars with Dune.
@jamiewilson82535 жыл бұрын
Eh? Star wars is based on some kind of Japanese story,Frank Herbert wrote Dune in about 1969 I think?!
@marcosdheleno4 жыл бұрын
"purposefully dumb down", thats a very nice way of saying "fixed from trash to good". remember, the original star wars was completely diferent, and was pretty much hated by everyone who watched it. the one to trully dumb it down was george himself, when he decided to put the ewoks so kids would like it more, and later with the bad additions.
