To clear up question I have seen in the comments. - This was originally a book series that inspired Star Wars - the budget will be around 150 million to 200 million - the book is so detailed that it is being split into two movies each around 2 and half hours

That sounds awesome. Wish they could’ve done the same thing with mortal engines. They got the visuals down in that film, but after having listened to the audiobook version, I can definitely see that they changed way too much of the original source material. Hope this won’t be the case for June.
@Chiungalla794 жыл бұрын
The inspired Star Wars part is maybe a little bit missleading. It was just one of many sources that inspired Star Wars. Greek literature, lord of the rings and many more were as important... and the greek literature was clearly inspiration for dune as well: Classic heroes journey.

for those wondering why they are using swords thousands of years into the future: 0:49 most people carry these personal shields on them. they completely deflect any fast moving projectiles. guns are obsolete, but there are beam energy weapons called Lasguns, which are somewhat common. however, they arent widely used because a Lasgun beam hitting a personal shield triggers a massive explosion (pretty much nuclear). so both people would die. This led to a unique blade fighting style where you must move your blade slowly enough to enter the shield, but fast enough to outsmart your opponent. Dune is full of stuff like this, i love it edit: read the first book. i promise you, if you find this kind of thing interesting you will love the world frank herbert created. it's hard at first to read and understand, but is the best fiction i've ever read

And looking at how big that story became it was inevitable I'd be swept in by the beauty of another. Frank Herbert is a genius and in spite of this movie, even in the spectacular attempt it has made to echo the story, indeed it is the writing that is the bright moon that sparks the light in this gem. A definite recommend.

@@brian2440 @Blackjack is half right. There is also the problem that when a beam from a laser gun comes in contact with a shield, it creates what equivalent to a small nuclear detonation. I.e. if you shoot someone with a shield, youre both dead. (And yes, thr tactic of blowing up the shield with a laser gun anyway in a suicidal move is used in the book) Therefore, many battles use blunt force objects.
@brian24404 жыл бұрын
Nicolas Thorngage I get that it’s sci fi but if your shields are fast enough to stop a metal object moving faster than the speed of sound at you, it makes zero sense for the same shield to not move fast enough to stop metal objects moving at slower speeds Idk this movie seems to be a lot more like fantasy to me with more of the space age elements like a Star Trek or Star Wars, whereas I think of sci fi to be rooted in practicality but with fictional events taking place like Arrival or Inception
@davidward2052 Жыл бұрын
Not many will realize it but, the music in the trailer, which is not used in the film itself, is an homage to the director Alejandro Jodorowsky. He was putting together a version of Dune in the late sixties that would have rivaled 2001 for sheer vision and psychedelic brilliance ( a documentary on the attempt to make it, called Jodorowsky's Dune is well worth watching.) Casting choices would have included Orson Welles as Baron Harkonen and Mick Jagger as Paul. The music was going to be provided by... Pink Floyd. Jodorowsky was never able to raise enough money for the project, and had to abandon it. Someof the designers he connected together: Brian Froud, H. R. Gieger, went on to make Alien . I do think, Villeneuves inclusion of this music is an appropriate nod to that vision.

@@vitaliyjuterbog8912 No point in turning a book into a film if you are going to adapt it 100% 'faithfully'. Not only is it arguably pointless but it is also somewhat impossible. Books have far more time (along with other liberties) than films do to tell their story/stories. In some cases it's a blessing because it forces a screenwriter and/or director to get creative to make up for the things they are forced to cut out as well as strip down unnecessary 'fluff' that doesn't really help develop the story/characters. Not to mention the obvious fact of a book has to rely on the reader's imagination, so it has to paint a vivid picture with words, whereas film is a visual medium so that bit is built in.

the thing that gives me hope this time over those that have tried to adapt this story in the past is that this time the director is a fan of the books and the story and not trying to just rewrite it the way he wants it he even states he wants to stay as close to the books as he can and go into more detail where needed to truly tell the story this series deserves this as it has helped shape so much of the scifi to follow it and has never been given its due

@@2pacaveli1988 i might be wrong, but i believe part 2 will come either way. one of Villeneuve's terms in taking this project on was that he would not be satisfied with only 1 film to cover the 1st book, and demanded to make two. I'm under the impression part 2 is being made as we speak
@2pacaveli19884 жыл бұрын
@@gooseman8304 idk. The only thing I heard was that he demanded to do this in 2 movies, because it would have been too much for just one movie. But Warner Brothers could say no to the second movie if this first movie is a commercial flop. Even if they go lighter on these terms because of the pandemic. So it might be likely he is able to do it, but maybe there is also the possibility that they say no to the 2nd movie. I hope they confirm the 2nd movie as soon as possible.

idk idk Not really, Britain didn’t really control India until the mid 1800’s or so, and once they took control it was only because they were the first industrialized nation in the world while others were still in their infancy. By the time the others would’ve industrialized and had empire plans India/Mughals, Egypt, the Ottomans, etc. would’ve industrialized and risen too, changing the game altogether. It isn’t taught in school but many developing countries were in the process of industrialization but were directly interrupted by the British empire wanting to keep them weak. Why let the other Europeans industrialize you ask? That’s not where their assets or future ambitions would be. English manufacturers actually even travelled throughout Europe helping set up industry in the same way. It makes sense if you’re trying to set up an empire and stranglehold on trade.

That's true because the story has so many layers and is much too complex for the movie. It's better suited for very expensive and expansive TV series then it can contain all pre and after events like a war of the machines and Leto's golden plan. I think if they make it action movie it will fail. Dune series is not an action novel but Political, Religious, Philosophical exposition which tries to model speculatively post-technological multiverse.

@anna83284 жыл бұрын
Let me put it like this: even if the movie is thousand times more amazing than the trailer - the books are hundred times more mindblowing than any movie could ever be. Those books transcend anything that was ever written. They make best books you ever read look like "Twilight". The world described in books - exactly like you see in the trailer, but much harsher, there is no sense of epic - people die and it's real, not heroic. The books are very intelligent about - book 1 - make Paul into an icon - book 2 - destroy this image - show ugly underbelly of actual righteous and good becoming rich politicians as a result of their coup. In book 3 and 4 designs and ideas, descriptions of universe, religion, countries, war, ideologies, humanity... there is nothing like Dune, ok? And if this director did it right we waited for those movies almost sixty years since Dune was published in 1965. It will blow your mind anyone could think like this in those times you know from utter prejudice, sexism, misogyny and racism.

A lot of that just comes down to budget. Star Wars episodes 1-3 looked great. Dune 2000 literally had Wizard of Oz era sets with static drawings hung on the walls of indoor sets for outdoor scenes. You could see the actors' shadows on the sky.

According to IMDb (and my dreams): “Adapting Dune for the big screen has been a lifelong dream of Denis Villeneuve, since he read Frank Herbert's novel when he was 12 years old. He wanted to make a faithful adaptation, so he waited until he'd made Arrival (2016) and Blade Runner 2049 (2017) so he would have sufficient experience in the genre before starting work on Dune.” Haven’t been this optimistic about a cinematic reimagining since Peter Jackson and LOTR. Villeneuve is about to raise the curtain on his most personal project yet, so I’m done with trailers after this; I want to walk in as close to neutral as I can get. 🤩

No, wrong. Fanboys will be fanboys. No standards these days, no brain, any bs they throw at you fanboys you get hyped like a braindead dromedary. Villeneuve is boring af. Blade Runner 2049 is nowhere near as good as the original movie. Why remake Dune? Makes no sense. The hand in box scene seen in this trailer is an exact copy of the original movie, so what's the point to copy it? I bet these cringe actors are worse than the ones in the original. You fanboys really are cringe, you lack a brain, you get overhyped at any shit they throw at you. Smh.
