It means he’s accepting the rule of “messiah” and in turn the catalyst for a genocidal holy war. The southern fremen are already more religious and devout as well as being warriors. Unlike the warriors of other planets-they have intense religious fervor. Think of the sardakar or the harkonnen warriors- they ran when things got intense, but the fremen wouldn’t run, they were the thing people were scared of.

@@Lee-vb4vhJust my opinion. I think it illustrates that the Fremen could never have won without Paul who came to understand that he was the catalyzing force between the various internal divisions in the Fremen. We tend to think the Fremen as a monolithic population but in reality the younger people in the North dismiss the more fundamentalist approach by those in the South. The meeting of the council demonstrates the diversity of the Fremen by not only dress, but by behavior. Chani makes references to Stilgar being from the South by his accent and his belief in the Messiah and benignly mocks him for it while respecting his ability as a fighter. Stilgar views religion as a liberating force, while she views it as a control mechanism as demonstrated by her excoriating those attending the council. Paul is deeply conflicted as he doesn't (yet) views himself as the Messiah yet understands that the Fremen needs to unite under the banner of a Messiah. Being an "off worlder" Paul had no other mechanism to unite the tribes and with the assistance of Lady Jessica, his innate political sense and military prowess became the "Messiah" even for the non-believers and the fundamentalists finally have a living, breathing Messiah. It is terrifying because the Fremen are now united as Paul now struggles with the temptation of becoming what he had claim he wasn't---a Messiah.

Yeah that was the intention. Denis wanted the whole thing to feel like it's just somebody who sarted rolling a camera in a real place when stuff is happening. The music and everything is supposed to sound like it belongs to that place and even all the tech and costumes and locations are well thought out to be as grounded as possible. He also doesn't do the dumb exposition of explaining the current events to the audience. He just lets the characters go about their business and let's it all happen naturally. It also means he just hints at a lot of things and lets something be unexplained and all but that only reinforces the feeling that it's real.

I was actually thinking about Dune in relation to Star Wars, particularly in the context of inter-galactic politics and just the scale of the universe that exists in Dune. But yeah in terms of cinematography, I can see some LOTR. I really do hope that Dune matures into what Star Wars should have matured into though and it finds the support it needs and all, but I also believe Denis Villeneuve has to be in the driver's seat

"While watching the movie, I was thinking, this is a trilogy that might be the first real follow up to the cinematic masterpiece of LOTR." Trilogy? Dune Part 1 and 2 aren't from book one? And the third movie will be about book two? Dune Messiah? Would that count as a trilogy? Is the 2nd book a good stopping point? I thought they'd adapt every book from the original 6/7.

That "6 or 7 books" joke was (unintentionally?) genius. If you're not in the know, the Dune books not written by Frank Herbert, the original author, are almost universally viewed as a bastardization, or at the very least, an inferior version of his world, and are often wholesale disregarded by the fanbase. Frank Herbert wrote 6 mainline Dune novels, as well as authorizing and overseeing an in-universe worldbuilding "Encyclopedia of Dune" shortly before his death. So, yes, many Dune fans would say "28 fuckin' Dune books!?!? So there's like 6 or 7..."

Although, it seemed like his last book was left on a cliffhanger. So if they want to finalize the ending, they might need to take the two "finale" books his son wrote in some form or another. Maybe that would be a case where the adaptation could really blow the source material out of the water.

Pre drinking the Water of Life... yes, it could have since they were both just potential Kwizatch Haderach (they were actually supposed to be married and their kid was who the Bene Gesserit planned to be the Kwizatch Haderach.) Once Paul gets access to seeing the future potentialities clearly then there was no real contest... Paul isn't reacting or even acting, he is following a specific predestined series of actions to achieve the desired outcome. Paul did all the things that he needed to do to win which he was already aware before the fight happened... even the manner of his victory in that way would/could have been intentional for how being seen to win that way would affect future events.

The scene where Paul walks into the ship's throne room and goes right past the Emperor and his Sardukaur was so perfect. Everyone, even the mighty Sardukaur stepped aside and didn't want any violence from Paul. They let him walk up and kill the Barron. Look at the body language of the Sardukaur, they are clinging more to the Emperor than the Emperor to them. The mighty Sardukaur step aside and we can infer they just gave up and got taken into custody. They didn't die for their Master where Paul's fanatics would have rather died than let Paul be breathed on. That scene was just powerful.

Hard disagree. Very cool visuals and stuff like that, but it was nothing like Dune. Aside from Paul becoming the leader of the fremen and defeating the Harkonnen and the emperor nothing was like the book, like at all. Everything happened out of order, the flow of time is completely wrong, the villains were stupid and ridiculous idiots rather than masterminds in their own right being outplayed by Paul, his wit and more notably his prescience, the character motivations were all jumbled up, many (most) plot points skipped, the religious aspect being dangerous was forcefully and violently injected into your brain through Zendayas activism rather than being something to be figured out by the audience through Pauls inner conflict about the consequences of what he's doing (Pauls relationship with Stilgar and how it evolves tells this aspect of the story way better than a teenage girl screaming at everyone that they stoopid, wake up sheeple) etc etc. The film implies that everything that is to come could be avoided if Paul were to listen to Chani instead of his evil mother. In the books the holy war is inevitable no matter what Paul does since he set foot on Arrakis so he tries to route the least bloody way through it which inevitably goes to shit.

We know what to expect visually and Denis exceeded that expectation again and Part Two definitely lived up to the hype, I'd say. Also knew it was gonna be more fast-paced but whew!! It was and then some! Very hard to say what my favorite scene is, I definitely need to see it again but any scene that gives me chills is typically my favorite scene/s and there are a few that did that for me in Part Two. One that stands out the most is not even an action scene so much, where Paul gives that speech to that epic sietch to the fundamentalists to the south after he has taken the Water of Life. Just Chalamet's delivery and the roar of the crowd and protests was just so heavy and well-done.

2 things: i’m mostly under the impression that for those that have read the book/s, this movie is even better bc you already understand the stranger concepts and what the whole deal is with Paul and his mom/sister. but having seen other people who have read the book talk about the same kind of confusion, i realized that what i was experiencing was even one step further, since i had chosen Dune as my subject for my senior paper. doing that, reading that book multiple times, inside and out, puts me beyond what we got to see on screen for the last 20% of the movie, so when i take myself out of the book knowledge i definitely understand the confusion. i dragged my girlfriend along with me and she said she only understood the parts that weren’t in english bc they at least had subtitles 😅. second, i’m scared for what will happen when Denis leaves, i feel like his touch really brings these movies together. i know at the very least it will be different, and that alone could diverge and create a whole new tone, even if it’s not a bad one. we’ll see tho, this one was amazing at least!

This is the first movie in a long time that I've seen in the theater and came out wanting to see it in the theater again. The sound was so incredible, the scene where they're attacking the spice harvester made me feel like I was being attacked myself. It was totally transporting.

Just watched Dune 2 and man it was absolutely incredible, one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. The cinematography was so good, the entire movie and set pieces were all beautifully shot, the story, action, epic Hans Zimmer soundtrack, everything was top notch. Denis Villeneuve truly one of the best directors today. The cast was great, Timothée Chalamet gave the performance of a lifetime and stole the show as Paul Atreides. A truly worthy sequel. So excited for Part 3.

The whole blue worm piss gave me cult cool aid vibes. The whole build up to Paul debating going south i kept yelling don't drink the cool aid.

Thank you Jeremy for being the very few really highlight the nuance and suggesting that Paul can be absolved by his actions because he's enlightened by something others don't that he can be victim of unfair judgement by carrying the burden of prescience.
