Fun fact: My copy of the game annoyingly came with two rogue characters and no cleric. Fortunately I was able to buy the cleric model online very cheaply. The prices aren’t so cheap now. Fun fact2: In the Forbidden Forest expansion, there’s a howler of a mistake on the hero card for one of the druids. It contains his brother’s info. Fun fact3: In the Eternal Winter expansion, most sets came with 4 salamander figures but only 3 monster cards. Checking through the quest book, one notes that there are only ever a maximum of 3 salamanders in play at any one time. So basically a free figure! What a costly production blunder!

Paid a fiver for mine , painted all the figures , gonna make some trees and towers for it , the game is very simple but I’m gonna play it like a tabletop war game , playing the game for an hour revealed the limitations of it , but games like this are meant to be modified

I really want a copy of this game! Looks like it could easily be converted into a solo game!
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
It's not the easiest game to solo because it uses pre-generated maps with hidden traps on it. If you could find some way around that, it's easy enough to automate all the monsters.

(Still watching it now.. as I write hehe). We play a similar series of games, the newer Dungeons and Dragons Adventure System board games, which are really fun and deeply immersive.

I know the ones. Those have the benefit of being co-op (it's always quite nice for everyone to be on the same side); but there's something pleasing about getting the chance to cackle maniacally when a hero steps on a trap.
@meme4tunef

hehe, very true.... but whats best of all about them, they`re fully solo (as well as co-op) and all the games (five of them now in fact) combine beautifully to make a huge game, if you so choose; yet all of them stands alone and doesnt need its brothers and sister games to be able to play.

I never really got into D&D as a roleplaying experience (although I did have the old yellow box with the blue hero miniatures and paper maps from too many years ago); but I've played a few different games in the D&D worlds. (Lords of Waterdeep is a favourite in our house.)

love this, was there ever a reason to disarm a trap considering it ran the risk of going off?
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Жыл бұрын
Yes. Every time Lidda disables three traps she gains 2 hit points, so there is a reward for her doing it. Also sometimes the traps are positioned in such a way that you cannot progress past them without activating or disabling some.

Hope you and your daughter are enjoying the dungeon plunging. HeroQuest is a great choice if she is a younger gamer. I haven't played Betrayal at Baldur's Gate, but I've heard some of the quests get a little bit fiddly. I'm still personally wildly swinging on whether or not to pick up the newest edition of Betrayal at House on the Hill.

Did you ever get around to playing this game? Looking for a game to get my 7 year old into, from your gaming experience are there any you would suggest? I am.going to get the D&D starter set as part of his Christmas stash from santa. I know it will probably be too hard for him initially, but my plan is that it will be on his book shelf until he grows into it. Enjoying your content so far, keep.up the good work!

This is a fun game, but long out of print. If you want something in print, you might want to look into the Dungeons and Dragons Adventure System games, such as Castle Ravenloft or Wrath of Ashardalon. They are co-operative, so you play together against the game's AI, the rules are pretty straightforward (and because it's co-operative you can help younger players with their turns), and it's a light introduction to some D&D concepts. Hasbro are currently crowdfunding a new edition of HeroQuest. The original HeroQuest was a very simple, streamlined introduction to dungeon crawling games, and for the new edition they are keeping the rules largely unchanged. Unfortunately, it won't come out until late next year, so you would have a long wait. I have really been enjoying Dungeon Saga, but personally think it might be a bit too much for a seven year old. There is also a new D&D game that just came out called Adventure Begins. It's a hybrid game that's supposed to work as a gateway to D&D proper by introducing basic D&D concepts and light roleplaying. It looks very accessible and is aimed at a younger audience. That might be a good game to look into, but I haven't played it myself.

Thanks for such a detailed reply, I really appreciate your comments and based on them my little boy is getting D&D the adventure begins as well as Castle Ravenloft for us to play together. Really enjoying your content so far, hoping there's more (or more in the future) of you guys capturing your antics like the D&D starter adventure, it was great viewing and I can see people taking tips to build their confidence in running their first rpg adventures/campaigns. Used to play MERP, Warhammer Fantasy rpg, shadow run, D&D, various games workshop boxed games (dark future being my first, followed shortly after by Adeptus Titanicus and then BFG) in my far way youth, hoping to capture some memories for my kids like I had in my younger years. Keep up the good content amd once again thanks!

Hey I was wondering if anyone can answer a few questions. I have recently started playing this game with a few friends :D. We are having a blast and I am thinking of picking up expansions. I know they are hard to find but I found a seller of both new for $250.00 NZ for both. First question is, are they worth getting? From my research it seems like my friends and I will have a lot of fun. And I know a lot of people will suggest getting a more modern version but we enjoy the fantasy adventure game a lot, and would love playing the expansions. Number 2: If I do get the expansions, how many characters are meant to be used? obviously the first main set has 4 heros, but when we get to the expansion adventures/custom adventures, we will have 6 heros, Morkahn from Eternal Winter and the Druid orwick. Are you meant to just pick 4 before you start, or use 5, or 6? Any help would be greatly appreciated! :D.

As much as I would love to own the two expansions, I can't justify the cost, so I don't personally own them. If you have the base game and you love it, and you want more adventures, then I would say the expansions must be worth getting. It's not like you have any alternatives if you want to expand the game. It's those expansions, or a different game. You still use four characters, I believe (the expansions say for 2-5 players). You just pick which ones you want to use. Each expansion has a 6-part scenario, and the included characters look like they are mainly intended for use in those campaigns (the barbarian seems to be an improved version of the warrior for use on snow, and I imagine the druid is an improved wizard for the woods), but I assume you can use any hero in any mission. The ice expansion has 6 level 3 missions, the forest expansion has a campaign that goes from level 1 to 3. I don't know much more than that, I'm afraid.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Hey mate that is awesome that makes a lot of sense :D. So if we had all characters we could pick the barbarian, warrior, rogue and cleric if we wanted to, as long as we only use 4 :). Yeah I know the cost is a lot and a lot of people just tell me to get castle ravenloft or something but there is something about the base game that is nostalgic and fun. Yeah the cost is hard to justify but I managed to find both expansions for $250. If you check ebay, they are listed at like $400-$500 for the Winter and around $300 for the forest expansion. I know that is because they are collectors items but that was the cheapest I could find. I know it is a lot fo money but I have spent more on mtg cards before and that is just cardboard haha!

As far as I'm aware you can pick any combo of four heroes for any of the scenarios (the cap remains at four), but the new heroes do have skills that tie into the new environments (ice and forest) making them better suited to those campaigns. Also, I'm not sure if the barbarian will have rules for using him at level 1 and 2 because the scenarios in that expansion are all for level 3. I would imagine he does, but hopefully someone else can confirm that for you. As someone with a bit of a collection of vintage fantasy board games I understand your thinking regarding paying for these sorts of games. Like I say, I would love to have copies of these expansions. I always kick myself for not grabbing them years ago, when they were readily available and very cheap in the UK.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Wicked! Yeah I feel like they will just get harder to find. They are probably not "worth" $250, but because they are so hard to find getting them now for $250.00 wont seem so bad when I can hopefully get fun out of them. I hope there is enough content in them :D. I also did some research and found someone who made a 3rd expansion called Glistening Forge. A very cool idea to expand it yourself :D.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Also, I just came across some information that monster cannot attack twice on their turn? I never knew this and we always just said 2 actions per monster/hero. It has made the adventures quite challenging but definitely doable. Is this true or can monsters attack twice? If not, why? :D.

There is a current line of D&D board games (Castle Ravenloft and the rest) but they are fully cooperative and don't play like this game at all. I would say the closest thing (probably unsurprisingly) is Hasbro's new edition of HeroQuest.
